Chapter Twelve

1767 Words
-Victoria's POV- One of the Langston high students taps Luke on the head. “Goose!” She starts to run, Luke gets up and runs after her. I watch and I was going to cheer for him but then I see that the girl is not even trying that hard to run from him. (That little... she wants to get caught.) I cross my arms and pout feeling annoyed. (I don’t like these games at all... stupid kids games. I’m letting Marina have it later, this is all her fault.) “Hey Vic, you and I are partners in the next game. It’s about to start.” Zach says walking over to me. “Oh ok. What is it anyway.” I ask. “Sack race.” He says. Isaac jerks his head towards us. “Wait you said team... as in two of you in one sack.” Isaac asks. Zach smirks at him. “Yep.” Isaac tenses up and I roll my eyes. “Ok, I'll be right there.” I say. He nods and walks to the sack race course. I turn to Isaac and cup his face. “I love you. You don’t have to be jealous over Zach.” I say. He looks away. “I am not jealous over him. Why would I be? I know you aren’t attracted to him.” He says and looks at me studying my face and watching me intently. (He SO is jealous. Zach is actually good looking but I feel nothing at all for him other than friendship. I have my boys and they are enough for me.) I smile. “You are right, I’m not." His body visibly relaxes and his expression changes to that of relief. I give him a kiss and then Luke runs over to us. “Done?” I say trying to hide my own jealousy. He smiles. “Yep, I won.” (Of course you did.) I keep my stupid jealousy in and smiles at him. “Good job love.” He smiles proudly. “Yep, wasn't easy but I made it at the end.” He wipes fake sweat from his forehead. “Duck duck goose was not a game for children.” He says and smiles waiting for me to laugh to which I do and Isaac rolls his eyes at us. “Alright alright, my turn.” I say. I walk over to where Zach is. “Hey is it starting yet.” “Yea.” He says laughing looking to the side. We look in the same direction and see the headmaster scolding Marina. “But it makes it much more fun. It’s always the same games every single year, right?” Marina asks. “Marina, this is... I don’t even know what to say. Look at what...” He can’t get the words out. “Look gramps, look around you. Everyone is laughing and having fun. It’s completely stress-free. There’s no real need to win so everyone is having fun and the best part is that students are actually mingling with each other.” “She’s not wrong.” Zach says softly as we listen to their conversation. I look around and he’s is right. Everyone is smiling and having fun. The headmaster sighs. “We’ll talk about this later.” A whistle sounds, our race is about to start. “Alright, be right back.” I say leaving the boys behind me and following Zach. He helps me get in a brown sack with him and we wait for the whistle, trying not to fall over. It's constricting, we can barely move. The whistle goes off and every single person in the race falls flat on their face, even me and Zach. “Ow.” Zach says holding his nose. “Phth, phth” I try to spit out grass that went into my mouth when my mouth took a bite out of the ground. Everyone that was watching us laughs. The teacher sounds her whistle but she is also laughing. “This race was not thought thoroughly,” Zach says and I nod still spitting out grass. “Woops!” We hear Marina say from the distance. "Maybe two people in one sack wasn't the best idea." The teacher walks over to the couple that fell a bit further than the rest of us. “These are the winners unless you all want to have a rematch.” She says and we all shake our heads not wanting to fall on our faces again. We walk back to Luke, Isaac, and now parker who of course is laughing none stop at us and I can see that Luke and Isaac are holding their laughs. “Well, that was not fun.” I say pouting. “Not for you.” Parker says and laughs again. Even though we did fall on our faces, the rest of the day is actually fun. Isaac, Nolan, and Holly did the eg race. Holly won, her petite figure and quick reflexes gave her a huge advantage. Parker, Marina, and Abel had a hula-hoop contest in which Marina won because these guys don't know how to work their hips properly. The day went on good. Langston high left our school a little less scared of us than when they came here. After the festival is over, we all clean up and then head for dinner. We all sit at the table feeling tired. It is around seven in the afternoon but the lunchroom is full. Because of the festival, we all get late dinner. “You played the egg race right?” I ask Holly. "Yep, and I won." She says smiling. “Of course you did, poor humans didn’t know you were a vamp, and us werewolves don't have your reflexes.” Parker says. Vampires tend to have better reflexes and nimbleness to them. They have the same speed as werewolves but because most of them have fewer muscles than the wolves, they are lighter on their feet. She smiles. “Yep.” Suddenly, all the lights go out. The place goes completely dark. Students start panicking. “What the hell?” “What is going on.” “Why are the lights out?” Zach and some of the other witches chant spells and lights come from their hands illuminating the room. I didn't notice how tight I was holding Isaac clinging to his arm but he didn’t mind. With his other hand, he pulled me closer by the shoulder. “It’s probably nothing, right?” Marina asks but none of us answers. We hear a loud pitch scream but is not someone screaming scared, it sounds more like they are announcing themselves. And whatever it is, it gives us all chills. “Everyone stay where you are, stay together.” One of the teachers says. Some of the teachers leave to investigate. Everyone is quiet, listening. This feeling of waiting is horrible. I hear something but don’t know what it is, we all hear it. It’s like sand falling on the wooden floor. We all look around but can’s see a thing. Those magical lights only illuminate about three feet from the caster but it's better than total darkness. We hear a swift movement and then someone grunting in pain. In the corner, there is a shadow figure with a turban, a mask that covers just its nose and mouth with black clothing. It wounded one of the vampires with a knife. The creature has four arms and they all have knives. Its skin is this gray black color and he has three red eyes. One of the eyes is in the middle of the forehead. Thankfully the vampires aren't easy to kill so the guy runs away and everyone starts to scream. Some of the students run to the creature to try to apprehend it but the creature turns into black sand. The sand travels through the floor with everyone running from it. “What is it?” Holly shouts. Zach looks pensive trying to figure it out. Students start running out of the lunchroom but we hear more screams out in the halls. “There’s more of them!” Someone shouts. “I got it! Dajing assassins!” Zach shouts. “That's what that artifact with the black dust and the pouch was.” He says happily that he figured it out and looking proud. “Ok... how do we get rid of it?” I ask. “Oh! Um... a... they can’t be killed so... the pouch! The pouch is what contains them. We need to find it. It should be near since they can’t be far from it.” He says. We look at everyone, they are all running around in panic. “Marina, make sure you stay with Nolan and Parker.” I say and she nods. I always worry about her since she is human. We all get ready to try and find the pouch but then from outside, we hear howls coming from the forest. “Is that...” I ask not finishing the sentence. “Yea!” Isaac growls out. “But they can’t get in, right?” Parker asks. Isaac shakes his head. “No, they shouldn’t...” He stops when we all see from the window the barrier flickering but doesn’t come down yet. “What is happening?” Holly asks. “I think... this is a full-on attack.” Isaac says. Zach looks at him alarmed. “Then they would be after the barrier!” “What do we do?” Abel ask. “The barrier is maintained by the four crystals that are at the edge of the school ground but if one of them is destroyed, then the whole barrier collapses.” He takes his phone out and calls the headmaster. “The barriers, they are after the barriers!” He shouts. From our side, one of the sand creatures materializes and swings its swords twirling its body in a circular unnatural way. It makes these weird almost robotic sounds. Isaac takes me in his arms and pulls me with him dodging the swords that come down on us. Zach, who is on the floor with his phone still in his ear watches the creature curiously. “Diversion, these creatures are a diversion!” He shouts on the phone and at that moment the creature swings at him.
