R U T H Tara had Indian roots. She was half Indian, I knew. Her mother was born and brought up in India before shifting here in her teenage years, and when Tara was very young, her mother lost her maternal family in an accident, taking away all of Tara's direct connection to India. Her mother kept her distance from that country now that she had lost her family and travelling there meant only revisiting old wounds. While Matt found a way to respect that, Tara loved her Indian heritage. Growing up in New York with this accent and her life being totally different from what she'd read about life in India is like, Tara often read books to learn more of the Indian culture.
