CHAPTER 4
JENIFER
“No more deliver. Finally,” I sighed as Ben pulled the delivery truck into the garage.
Since apparently, I had reported last in the morning, Mrs. Ballard had made me do the deliveries with her son, Ben. Ben was actually the only person I considered a friend and we’ve known each since high school when his family moved into town. Not that I didn’t enjoy his company but I preferred mostly being in the bakery, baking and secretly listening to my female co-workers gossiping about the next piece of hunk in town or the guys they were dating or screwing. Clandestinely I wished I was half bold or half charming as them but clearly I was a man repellant and the only guy I dated in college ran off. Usually, that was the norm but today, I had been severely distracted, my mind constantly switching back to my neighbor. It seemed illegal for a man to have such strikingly sexy features but the worst part of it was that, my body clearly craved him. f**k! Every time even as much as the thought of his name slightly brushed my thoughts, a huge amount of heat slid through me and it was so damn awesome.
“Are you okay Jenny?” Ben’s voice sifted through my thoughts, jerking me back to reality; the sad reality that a man that good looking would only go for someone exuding the same amount of dazzling looks.
“I’m fine. I’m just glad this day is over. Making deliveries is really exhausting and honestly I feel like I’m about to pass out,” I answered, joining Ben outside the truck.
“You don’t look like someone who is about to pass out. As a matter of fact you look more gorgeous than ever,” Ben chuckled and I joined him.
“When will you stop being all flirty with me Ben? You need to get a girlfriend,” I shook my head as I led the way to the bakery to hand over the delivery reports and change out of our delivery t-shirts.
“Maybe I don’t need a new girl in my life, maybe all I want is you,”
“Yeah, right,” I rolled my eyes, chuckling a little.
“I’m serious,” I stopped with my hand on the door. There had been no trace of amusement or the usual joviality in his tone and that made me turn around.
“That was a good one Ben. You almost got me there,” I stated half hoping it was merely one of his usual flirty jokes. His serious expression never wavered and as a matter of fact, he grabbed my elbow.
“I may be flirtatious with almost every girl I meet but with you, I’m serious. I always have been, since high school when you tripped over that stupid paper ball. But all you ever saw in me was just a friend and when I thought we could take things to the next step that Todd dude came along and you abandoned me. Then he tramped on your heart and you grew bitter over almost every man that even bounced your way,” I felt like I had stopped breathing.
I had known Ben for the longest time and of all the things I expected, this was not one of them. He was supposed to be my friend; just a friend and I’ve never brought myself to see him past anything other than that.
“Ben...” I trailed to a stop. I had no idea what I was supposed to say at this point. I was still in so much shock and a mixture of emotions skidded through my system. How was one supposed to feel when the guy you’ve only seen as a friend for so long, suddenly confessed to have feelings for you?
“s**t! That was not how I always pictured myself telling you this. It was supposed to be at some candle light dinner in a fancy restaurant and I would be holding your hands. You know what? Just forget it; forget I ever said anything,” he brushed past me.
I had to lean against the wall to avoid falling over. How the heck was I supposed to forget he said he had feelings for me? I never bothered walking in and once I was able to get stable on my feet, I walked home with my mind in a complete daze.
“I had a good day. Thanks for asking,” Chloe muttered sarcastically, pulling me out of my thoughts.
When did I get home?
“Have you had dinner?”
“It’s only seven Jenny,” She was curled up on the couch, an open text book on her lap but her entire attention was clearly focused on her phone.
“Ben and I grabbed a late lunch, so I’m going to take a warm bath and have an early night. Make sure you eat something warm, fresh and organic,” I warned sternly but knowing my little sister, she would probably grab some snacks in the fridge or order pizza. Tonight I was too drained to even wait for her reply, so I slowly made my way to my bedroom, only sighing in relief once I was inside.
Shedding my clothes off, I walked into the bathroom, turning on the shower. As the warm water cascaded down my naked body, I closed my eyes, trying to make myself forget about Ben’s whole confession. It was hard to forget about something critical that had already been said right to your face.
“Focus on me Jenifer,” A deep voice whispered slightly brushing my ear. It was no mistake that had to be my neighbor, Damien.
“What the-“
“Be quiet love and don’t open your eyes,” he ordered firmly as he suddenly jerked my body against his, our bare skins in an electrical contact.
