Lucky’s Point of View
I tried to reach Scarlett but couldn’t, which was nothing new when she was in the Faye world these days. Thankfully I was able to reach Cedric, he told me that using the portals would be difficult for me to do on my own, so he offered to take me himself. I called Danny to find out exactly where I was going while I waited for Cedric to get here and told him everything Bastien told me.
“Lucky, are you winding me up? Because I’m in no mood.”
“I wish I was brother.”
“Mother of Christ! Should we come now?”
“Boom would have to cancel his show. Not that I think he gives a damn but that’s up to you guys. Honestly, there isn’t much you can do there right now except pace the floors.”
Danny sighed heavily, “the three of them lying in coma’s is making my skin crawl and that’s exactly what we’d be doing which will only serve to make matters worse. I’m going to go give Boom the happy news. We’ll either see you sooner or later, please call me if anything changes.” I promised I would, I hung up with Danny just as Cedric got there.
“You ready?”
I slung my bag over my shoulder and took a final look around the apartment Scarlett and I had in Tokyo; it was as empty as it felt. “Yeah brother, let’s get the hell outta here.” He wasn’t exaggerating about how tricky the path was using the portals, it was one twist and turn after the other. I totally would’ve gotten lost and ended up who knows where.
“We’re almost there” Cedric said, he wasn’t much for small talk in the best of circumstances, much less when things sucked.
“Already!?” It felt like we just left.
“We took a short cut, I figured you wanted to get there as soon as possible.”
“I do. Thank you so much for doing this. I know you’re busy, I really appreciate it and so will everyone else.”
“Absolutely, anytime. Here, take this” he handed me a strange looking cell phone, it looked like an old burner phone. “That is a direct line to me, if you or anyone else needs anything you use that. Pardon the question but would you like me to find Scarlett when I get back and fill her in on what’s going on?”
“Yeah, you might as well. I can never get ahold of her when she’s there. At least I can concentrate on what’s going on instead of worrying about getting in touch with her before she goes back to the apartment.”
“I know it’s none of my business, but time is very different there. What is three days in the mortal world is less than three hours in the Faye world. Whenever I see her these days, she’s running around like a nut trying to get the bigger factory built and the store she’s opening there. Why she thought she should do them both at the same time is beyond my understanding.”
“That’s Scarlett for you,” ordinarily I would’ve laughed and been proud but now I was just tired. More often than not I just felt like her s*x toy, she’d show up long enough to have amazing s*x and then she was gone again.
“We’re here” Cedric’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. “If I’m not mistaken, they should be about a quarter of a mile southeast.”
“Thanks again man, I’ll send them your regards.”
“Please do and please let me know if I can help in any way. I’ll check in on you later, that line works both ways.” I jumped out of the portal and took off in the direction of where Cedric thought they’d be. I used my vamp speed; I figured the jungle was enough of a cover if I passed a mortal. Almost right away I saw a massive house on the beach, it had to be them and if wasn’t then whoever was there was going to get the shock of their life. I saw Bastien sitting on a daybed next to Raffa, holding Jones. He either heard me or could feel me coming, either way he looked up from the baby. I could see the relief on his face immediately. I sped up when I saw them, I was already pulling my stethoscope out of the front pocket of my bag. He laid Jones down on the daybed, neither of us saying a word before I started to examine Jones.
“His heartrate is very strong, and his breathing is too although it’s shallow” I said after I listened to him, his breathing was so shallow that I would not have heard it with just my vamp hearing, I needed my trusty stethoscope.
Bastien looked as if he’d break into tears, “are you sure? I couldn’t hear anything.”
“Here, use this” I handed him the stethoscope and put it where it needed to be. He exhaled deeply and hugged me tight.
“Thank you for coming so quickly. You have no idea how much you being here as helped already. He keeps running back and forth between the two. But if Jones is in there, he can’t handle seeing both at the same time. Rowan loses it every time he sees Jones.”
“I’m sure he does, he looks dead. I’m going to go check on Dylan and tell him Jones is okay, despite how he looks.”
“I’ll stay out here for now” Bastien said. I walked into the house, Rowan was holding Dylan, rocking her back and forth. Begging for her and Jones to come back to him, my mind flashed back to him rocking her on the bedroom floor the night she turned. Rebecca was behind him rubbing his back.
“Hey brother” I said quietly.
He looked up at me, stunned. He blinked his eyes, not believing what he was seeing. “Lucky?”
“The one and only, look at me brother.” I got down on the floor next to him, Dylan laying in his arms between us. “I just examined Jones, I know it looks terrible but he’s breathing, and his heart is strong.”
“He is?” He was a sobbing mess.
“I promise he is. I’m going to check on Dylan and then Bastien is going to bring Jones in here and you can listen to him breathe for yourself, okay?” He nodded his head yes while I listened to Dylan, her breathing was as shallow as the baby’s, but she was breathing and that’s all that mattered. “She’s okay, here listen.” I put the stethoscope in his ears so he could listen to her breathe and motioned for Bastien to come in with the baby so he could listen to him too, that seemed to calm him as much as anything possibly could.
“You’re a wonderful friend Lucky” Suke’s voice startled me, I looked around trying to figure out where it was coming from.
“He’s on the phone” Rebecca said. I apologized to him for not being able to be there, even though he said I was where I was supposed to be I still felt bad. Rebecca and Bastien filled me in on what happened at the waterfall and then we sat quiet for the next twenty minutes until Laa started to stir.
“I think she’s coming to!” Suke exclaimed, he moved the phone, so we were able to see her and sure enough she woke up, a bit groggy but as good as new.
“My word, what happened?” she asked as she looked around, trying to figure out how she got on the floor and why we were all staring at her over Facetime. Suke and Rebecca took turns telling her about the sudden turn of events that led to her being on the kitchen floor.
“I’m coming, we’re coming. I don’t know what’s going on or who that man is or was, but I do know I need to be there with my family” Laa was adamant, it was clear she was not playing and no one was going to tell her anything different.
“You read my mind sister” Rebecca wiped her tears.
“Suke, call Boom and Danny. They’ll have a plane waiting for you by the time you get to the hanger” I suggested.
“Done, we’ll call you soon” Suke said before he disconnected the call. Raffa began gently nudging Jones with his nose, I figured he knew something we didn’t and listened to Jones again. His breathing was starting to get stronger with every breath.
“Rowan, pull yourself together. Your son is coming back, he needs his father to be able to comfort him.” I took Jones out of Bastien’s arms and handed him to Rowan.
“I can feel him breathing!” Rowan’s eyes lit up as he held Jones against his chest. All of us let out a collective sigh when his little head popped up like a piece of toast. “Hi! Did you have a good nap?” Rowan didn’t miss a beat. Jones looked groggy and as confused as Laa did, but it didn’t take him long until he flashed his killer smile that he got from Rowan. I said hello to him in Korean and just like always, he giggled. He loved when I spoke Korean to him, he loved whenever ever I spoke different languages to him, but Korean was his favorite. The more I talked the more he giggled and soon he was doing his famous wiggle kick in Rowan’s arms. Jones looked down on at Dylan on the floor and blew a raspberry at her, “mommy still sleeping, she’ll wake up any minute” Rowan told him.
“Maybe,” I said.
“What? Laa and the baby are awake” Rowan looked incredulously at me.
“Yes, they are” I agreed, “but neither of them are vampires. Just like the night she turned, the witch in her made the process much longer. I wouldn’t be surprised if the vampire in her slows down this process, her breathing hasn’t changed” I said while I listened to her.
“Lucky, that makes perfect sense. What would we do without you, thank you so much for being here” Rebecca still looked shaken.
“Why don’t we get her off the floor, where would you like her to go, on the couch or in your bedroom?” Bastien asked Rowan.
“The couch, I don’t want her where I can’t see her” Rowan was not going to relax until she opened her eyes, none of us were. Bastien lifted her off the floor and laid her on the couch, putting a pillow under head and covering her with a blanket to make her look like she was in fact sleeping for Rowan’s benefit as much as Jones’s.
Rebecca warmed up a bottle for him and brought it over for Rowan, “while your Daddy gives you your bottle, Nana will cut up some fresh fruit from Eka, how’s that?” Jones happily reached for his bottle.
“Whoa, your eating fruit!? Big boy!” I said to him in Korean, making him belly laugh, which thankfully made Rowan laugh. I felt my phone vibrate against my leg; I knew it was Scarlett. “Excuse me for a minute” I walked outside to take her call. “Hey.”
“How nice of you to answer, since you didn’t bother to tell me you were leaving?”
“Uh, I tried to tell you I was leaving, a few times. I’m sorry if I didn’t wait to leave until I talked to you. It was important.”
“It’s always important when it concerns King Rowan.”
“Are you out of your mind?” I stopped myself, “I know you’re only saying that because you’re angry at me so I’m not going to take it personal, but I know as well as you do that you would do the exact same thing for Dylan.”
“Dylan has been my best friend for over twenty years.”
I interrupted her, “yeah? Well, I’ve known Rowan seventy years past that. What exactly is your point, Scarlett? s**t, I thought you’d be happy or at least relieved that I was here, at the very least for Dylan and Jones. Whatever, I’m not going to do this with you right now, I have to go and try to keep Rowan level, for Jonesy’s sake.”
“I want to talk to Dylan, put her on the phone. Please.”
“What? Scarlett, Dylan, for all intents and purposes is in a coma! I can’t put her on the phone.”
“Wait a minute, what do you mean she’s in a coma? Cedric said there was a situation, and you went to be with Rowan.”
“Yeah, his wife and son suddenly went into a coma. Right in front of him at that, that’s why I rushed to get here,” I explained everything to her.
“Oh my god, I had no idea. I... I’m sorry. I didn’t realize. I should be there.”
“I’ll tell you the same thing I told Danny, there’s nothing you can do. If you want to come here by all means you should absolutely come but you can’t be crawling out of your skin, pacing the floors. It’s not going to help anything. Thank God Jones literally just came to, right before you called. I’m going to do my best to keep Rowan cool because he needs to be for Jones. Bastien and Rebecca just got here themselves this morning, they’re trying to be calm, but they’re also stretched pretty thin, because of the vampire part of her I have no idea how long Dylan be like this. It could be two hours or two days. Laa and Suke are coming too, I have no idea when.”
“When are Danny and Boom coming?”
“I’m not sure, like I said, I told Danny he shouldn’t rush to get here if they can’t be calm. Please don’t think I don’t want you to be here. I love you, Nabi.”
“I’m going to call them; I’ll call you back. I love you too.”
Boom’s Point of View
“I am a terrible person” Danny hung up the phone and looked out the window of the plane. “I just outright lied to Scarlett and told her we were waiting until after your show to leave.”
“I know I heard, for what it’s worth I would’ve done the same thing. Lucky and Scarlett are going through some serious growing pains right now, adding more tension to an already tense situation would be like pouring gasoline on a fire for everyone. It would make them fight more and Rowan would lose his s**t. Jones is a very intuitive little guy; he’d pick up on all the stress in no time and his mommy can’t make him feel better. As far as I’m concerned, his wellbeing is paramount. It will be much better if she comes after Dylan wakes up or at least in a day or so, they can stay with us at our other villa. I’m sure Laa will want to stay at the treehouse. You can blame me; say I had a change of heart right before my set started.”
“I agree with everything you just said, and I will absolutely blame you” he smiled at me as the plane slowly came to a stop. Budi was waiting for us when we got off the plane, he smiled and waved, he had aged so much since the last time we saw him.
“Hello, my old friend, how are you?” I asked him.
“Good, much better since your friends arrived, they saved our village.”
“What?” Danny and I both asked. He proceeded to tell us about the man that Rowan killed and about his friends that were prowling around even though Bastien did his best to keep that from happening.
“We’re scared what they will do when the sun goes down” he looked at the hot pink sunset.
“They’re not going to do anything but get themselves killed, just like their friend did” Danny huffed.
“Budi, I give you my word that none of us will let them do anymore harm to your village” I reassured him. Once we got deep into the jungle, we had Budi stop so we could vamp the rest of the way, it would be quicker than his old car trying to navigate the dirt roads. “Please tell Eka we will be there tonight, but if anything should happen before we get there you run as fast as you screaming at the top of your lungs to the treehouse, that’s where we’ll be.”
“Okay, but what about your bags?” he asked us.
“We’ll get them later tonight” Danny said before he took off into the jungle. I kept up with him as best as I could to the treehouse. I sent Lucky a telepathic message when we were close, he was waiting for us at the door. “Please tell me she’s awake” Danny said hopefully, Lucky shook his head no. We walked into the surreal scene, Dylan was lying on the couch with Rowan next to her, his body curled around her whispering in her ear. Bastien and Rebecca were sitting at the table helping Jones eat the fruit on the tray of his highchair.
“Am I happy to see the two of you” Rebecca walked over and kissed and hugged us. Bastien looked like the exhausted, worried father he was. I think his worry was a 50/50 split between Dylan and Rowan.
“BOOM!” Rowan sat up, “see if you can see into her mind, maybe you can see what she’s thinking! Or see what she’s seeing.”
“Oh Rowan, I can try but…”
“Please” he was desperate, I couldn't imagine what he was feeling, nor did I want to. I walked over to her and put my forehead against hers and was immediately thrown across the room by a force I had never felt before.
“My friend, I’m sorry but whatever is going on in there made it very clear that it I am not meant to see it.”
