Kai had just received an urgent summons, his eyes narrowing as he read the note from one of the palace messengers who stood at the door. I could feel his hesitation as he turned toward me, his hand on the wheel of his chair, ready to leave but clearly troubled about it. "Kai," I began, "if they’re asking for you, it’s probably important. You should go." He looked hesitant, eyes scanning the crowded clinic around us. “Hmm, I have to. It looks like you are going to be swamped today.” I forced a smile, hoping it would ease the concern etched on his face. “Yes. But I will manage. We have a lot of hands here.
