HUNTER'S POV
I was sitting at the back of the car, looking absentmindedly out the window while Colton, my Beta and best friend, drove us back to the pack - the Grand Lake Pack. I just got back from Washington DC to attend an emergency meeting with the other Alphas in Northern America.
Apparently, there were several instances of what appeared to be altercations between Werewolves and Vampires. Dead bodies of both kinds were discovered, usually in remote places like forests and deserts on the continent. We've also received words that some packs in Eastern and Northern Europe are experiencing the same. This is troubling news. If these encounters persist, we might be on the brink of a war.
Although vampires and werewolves are sworn enemies, we have strived to let each other be. Too much effort were made to achieve some level of peace and order. It is for this reason that the Council for the Supernaturals was forged. The members of the council are represented by the heads of each magical being, such as werevolves/shifters, vampires, and witches.
The Peace Treaty was put in place to clearly define our territories. It is prohibited to enter one's land without permission. Unmarked or unclaimed lands are neutral ground. It means that everyone is free to enter, but violence, in any form, is strictly forbidden. Human territories are also considered neutral as long as they don't cause any harm to them or do anything that could expose our existence.
"We're home," Colton announced, snapping me out of my thoughts through mindlink.
"Finally!" I exclaimed with a smile, stretching after what felt like a long journey.
I spotted two guards opening the iron gates, ready to welcome us back. In the distance, I saw my Gamma, Theon, waving and running toward the car.
My instincts kicked in. I knew immediately that something was wrong.
I rolled down the window and asked, "What's the matter?"
"Alpha, we have a situation," Theon reported, urgency in his voice. "Our border patrols just spotted movement near the lake. They’re approaching the intruder as we speak."
"Get in!" I fumed, my irritation boiling over.
Theon quickly jumped into the passenger seat as Colton slammed his foot on the accelerator, speeding toward the border.
I simmered with rage, cursing under my breath as we raced along. Judging by Theon and Colton's hardened expressions, I could tell they were just as ready for a fight.
Nobody has ever dared to trespass my land for a very long time. Anyone who was bold or stupid enough to enter my pack without permission has either met their gruesome end or is left to perish in the dungeons, never to be heard of again.
What made me even more furious was that, of all the days for this to happen, it had to be today. I had been looking forward to spending the rest of my day in bed, catching up on the sleep I’d missed during my trip. Instead, I was thrust back into chaos, and the frustration boiled within me.
But no! This mother***er had to show up and ruin my day. I could already feel my mind racing with the various methods of torture I would inflict upon him. I wanted blood, pain, and plenty of screaming.
When the car halted, I hurriedly got off. One of the guards greeted us and pointed to where two other guards appeared to be kneeling down. I could see a figure lying down which I assumed belonged to that f****g intruder.
Good. They already contained the situation.
I ran toward the two guards, my Beta and Gamma following closely behind.
"Let's kill some motherf..," I was unable to continue as a sudden surge of fragrance flooded my nostrils.
It was the most inviting scent I have smelled in my entire life. It was the scent of green tea, aloe vera, and a hint of ripe mangoes. It smelled clean and fresh and pure, reminiscent of the morning breeze at the beach on a tropical island.
"Well, f**k me!" I blurted as I finally laid my eyes on the unconscious body lying on the ground.
"She's human," Theon announced. "But I can smell the vampire scent on her."
I walked closer to sniff at her more. Sure enough, I smelt it. Very faint, but it's there.
One guard was checking her pulse while the other one was inspecting her wounds. I observed deep, long wounds on her stomach. There were deep cuts and scratches all over her body. I can see bruises are starting to form. There's another big wound on the sole of her right foot.
Sean, one of the guards, who was looking at her wounds, lifted her bloodied shirt higher to figure out how far the wound went. For some reason, I felt protective of her, not wanting her exposed in front of others.
Without knowing, I let out an angry growl which startled everyone. As if sensing my emotions, the human started whimpering, but her eyes stayed closed.
"That's enough," I snarled. "Let's take that thing to the hospital."
I tried my best to make my voice as menacing as possible to recover from my emotional outburst just seconds ago.
I was about to pick her up myself when Theon beat me to it. He carefully scooped her up and carried her into his arms. He even positioned her head on his chest so it wouldn't hang awkwardly. Part of me wanted to claw my Gamma's head off for being too touchy with her.
But the better part of me knew this was just the stupid mate bond at work, amplifying my feelings of possessiveness.
Theon walked up to the car, but before he could open the car door, I stopped him.
"Give it to me," I ordered.
I took the girl from his arms and laid her down at the back of the car. I lifted her head, so I could sit with her and placed it on top of my lap.
The drive to the pack hospital was eerily quiet. We all seemed to be too absorbed with our own thoughts. Like me, I knew they have so many questions in their heads. No human has ever stepped foot on our land before. So how did she get here? What the hell happened to her? What do I do with her?
The pack doctor, Dr. Johann Pierce, was already waiting with a gurney even before we parked in front of the emergency room. Colton must have mind-linked him prior to coming. I followed while he wheeled the girl to one of the rooms. Once inside the room, the doctor checked her vitals and dressed her wounds.
"Her condition is stable but severely dehydrated," Dr. Pierce informed me, his tone professional yet urgent. "The dressing on her wounds is just temporary. I need to stitch her up before an infection sets in, but we don’t have the appropriate drugs to treat humans here."
I sighed heavily, frustrated at being inconvenienced by a human. “Write me a note,” I instructed him. “I’ll have someone fetch what you need right away.”
He quickly scribbled something on his prescription pad and handed it to me. I turned and walked out of the room without glancing at the woman still unconscious on the hospital bed. I didn’t need to see her face. Once she was awake, I wanted her gone from my territory.
I found Colton and Theon waiting for me in the lobby. They stood up as soon as they saw me approaching.
"Send a guard outside her room," I barked at them. "Once she wakes up, inform me ASAP!"
Colton and Theon nodded in unison, quickly moving to follow my orders as they led me out of the building. “Let’s get you home, Alpha,” Colton said.
Once we arrived at the pack house, I quickly reminded them to see me in my office tomorrow first thing in the morning. I handed Colton the prescription note, but before he could take it, Theon swiped the piece of paper from his hand.
“I’ll handle this,” he said, his tone filled with enthusiasm.
I shot him a sharp look, irritation bubbling beneath the surface. His interest in this human didn’t sit well with me. I was prepared to voice my annoyance when Colton beat me to the punch.
"Looks like someone's taking a liking to our little human friend," Colton said sarcastically.
"Shut up. I'm just trying to help. Since both of you just got back from a long trip, I figured I'd take this one off your plate, the two of you could have your beauty rest." Theon countered, waving the piece of paper in his hand with a hint of mischief in his eyes.
Too tired to prolong the discussion, I turned my back and walked to my room. I took a quick shower and went to bed.
Tomorrow's going to be a big day.
