UNKNOWN POV
I knew something suspicious was going on. But I never realized how messed up this was going to be. For months, I have been receiving reports of dead bodies of both vampires and werewolves. Judging by the claw marks on their bodies, werewolves are the culprits. But I can't shake this nagging feeling that there's so much more to this.
Something didn’t add up. I understood that werewolves and vampires resented each other, but due to the peace treaty between the supernatural factions, encounters like this were increasingly rare. Yet, here I was, witnessing werewolves killing both their own kind and vampires in unmarked territories on multiple occasions. That raised too many red flags.
Everything about this felt staged.
I had to get to the bottom of this and put an end to the killings before they drew unnecessary attention from other supernatural beings—and humans, especially humans.
For months, I have sent my best trackers to follow every lead, but to my frustration, we've only gotten dead end after dead end. I was so deep in my thoughts when I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket. When I saw the name flashing on the screen, I immediately answered the call.
"Lance, did you find anything?" I asked immediately as soon as I answered the call.
Lance was one of my best trackers, currently stationed in Canada.
"This could be nothing, but I spotted something strange. There's a livestock shipment heading to a ranch that doesn't exist. I'm texting you the exact location, and I'm pretty sure you'll find nothing there but a dense forest," Lance explained from the other end of the line.
"When is the shipment arriving?" I asked.
"It's traveling by land from a neighboring province. It should arrive in two days," Lance replied.
"Good job. I'm getting on a plane tonight. I should be there before they arrive," I informed him before slipping the phone back into my pocket and heading off to prepare for my journey.
It's going to be a long flight.
I landed a day early, giving me extra time to strategize and prepare my men.
On the day the "shipment" was set to arrive, we were already deep in the woods, scouting for any suspicious activity. I had brought two of my best trackers, Lance and Dominic—both skilled fighters. I gave them clear instructions to not engage until I gave the signal.
I kept my ears sharp, listening intently for any unusual sounds or disturbances as I ventured deeper into the dense forest.
"I hear movements up north," Dominic said. "Near wolf territory,"
"Let's hurry then." I said as we went deeper into the woods.
A few minutes later, we spotted what we were looking for.
I hid behind a boulder, making sure to keep a safe distance while still having a clear view of what was happening. I signaled my men to do the same.
Watching from afar, I was baffled by what I saw: eight individuals, lying on the cold ground, all of them unconscious. I scented four werewolves (two women, two elderly men), three fledgling vampires, and a female human.
What the hell is a human doing with them?
From a makeshift tent emerged two vampires who carried themselves with authority. Even at a glance, I could tell—they were the ringleaders of this entire operation.
One by one, the unconscious captives began to stir—except for the human. I watched as one of the ringleaders muttered something while locking eyes with each of them. Moments later, they bolted into the woods like madmen, clearly compelled to obey his command.
Seeing that the human was still unconscious, the other vampire dumped a splash of water over her head, forcing her to awake. I watched as he yanked her upright and attempted to compel her, just as he had with the others.
To my utter surprise, instead of bolting like the rest, she remained firmly in place, demanding to know what was going on. I nearly chuckled at the vampire’s dumbfounded expression—if I were in his shoes, I’d be just as stunned.
The vampire tried compelling her again, with more conviction this time, while his partner observed. Once again, the girl did not comply.
Even I was astonished. Despite her weakened state, she resisted compulsion—a feat that should have been impossible for a human.
Compulsion is one of the many abilities vampires possess. They can bend the will of humans, weaker vampires, and even incapacitated werewolves and witches. The only ones known to be immune are the First Vampires.
I had never heard of a human resisting compulsion—until now.
I snapped out of my fascination when a loud growl echoed through the trees. "Rogue wolves," Lance whispered, pointing in the direction of the sound.
I turned to see five werewolves, still in their human forms, bound by chains. But as soon as the two buffoons released the rogues, they immediately shifted and began chasing their unfortunate prey.
How they managed to control the rogues was beyond me, so I decided to follow them stealthily.
I was right about all of this being staged. But who could be behind this? What are they trying to achieve with this?
I was lost in thought when a faint but tantalizing scent pulled me from my reverie.
Human blood.
In that moment, my thoughts shifted to her—the brave human who stood her ground, despite her obvious fear. I hadn’t even realized I was following her scent until I found her standing at the edge of a cliff, eyes closed and tears streaming down her face. In front of her, a gray wolf was slowly approaching, its intentions clear.
Something snapped within me when I saw the wolf s***h her belly.
I see humans being killed every day. Why's this any different?
"Kill the rogues! Capture those two vampires!" I commanded my men, to which they complied hastily.
Without wasting any seconds more, I ran to her before the wolf struck her again. I wrapped my arms around her, jumped off the cliff where I knew a deep body of water would break our fall.
I could tell by her limp body that she was already out of it even before we jumped. So I lifted her head above water to make sure she didn't drown.
I let the current carry us farther away from that dreadful place, ensuring she wouldn’t be followed. I knew we had entered werewolf territory, which meant that no one—especially not the rogues or the vampires—would dare venture here.
Once I spotted a few guards patrolling the pack grounds, I carefully maneuvered her body onto the riverbank, ensuring she was out of harm’s way.
I made sure her vitals were steady and her bleeding stopped. I took one last careful look at her before finally leaving her.
I could only hope they found her in time and provided her with the care she so desperately needed.
Before long, I was outside the pack territory, watching from a distance as the guards approached her. A wave of relief washed over me. She was found and safe. With that comforting thought, I turned and walked away from the forest.
My heart felt heavy for leaving her behind, but I knew I had to return and inform the others about what had happened.
There was still a lot of work to be done.
