I don’t know why the idea came to me as such a surprise. Asher was strong, and the way he had commanded everyone on the beach last night was impressive. Everyone had followed him so easily. Hell, I’d been amongst them. Until Maddie had spilled his little secret, my trust in Asher’s ability to protect me had been unwavering. There was never a doubt in my mind that he could protect me, and I guess if he made everyone feel that way, then it made sense for people to want him to be the next pack alpha.
Yet, then I thought of the panic I’d seen in Maddie’s eyes after she’d left that word slip last night. Or the panic she had written all over her face when Asher followed me out of the house today and we’d continued our little spat in the driveway. She was terrified to go
