CHAPTER 24: HIS PAST, ZACHARY’S TORMENTS She may not have deny it, but Devon was slowly liking it here. Far from the Devonshire Kingdom, Devon seems to appease her worries, the vampires were more kind, they are humble unlike the wolves who treated her, despise her being and hunted her to be killed. Here, Zachary ensured her safety, and not even once had she felt like she do not belongs here. Nobody speak ill to Devon. She had not yet gotten those looks she were often thrown into, or perhaps was it because the vampires still had not known that she is a rogue? That was strange. The scent she emits should have let them know who she is, but what was odd, if possibly they knew exactly already was that—they are not acting hostile to her. But nevertheless, Devon should not think too much. It won’t do good. If it not yet happen, then there’s nothing she should be drawn towards scenarios that may ruin her stay as they seems more vivid than before. She sighs, heaving a deep sigh coming from her chest as if it were enough to repel those which bothers her greatly. “And you are sighing again.” Ino said. “You could tell me if you are tired and that would be okay, your highness.” “It’s Devon, Ino.” She didn’t know how many times had Devon told him not to call her your highness or any of that sort. Royalty. It made her shudders. She was far from being a royal blood. “I insist, your highness.” But Ino won’t listen. Now, Devon is tempted to sigh again, but she suppress herself. Innocencio Del Valle is Zachary’s personal advisor. He is tall, and pale. Unlike the King whom she had been mated with, Ino appeared more to be that vampire they were often scared about, but a little more decent. He is so pale that it worries her whether he is drinking the blood pills or not. But he reassured her that it is just the way he looks. Zachary had left her under his care to be trained. And they had been going through a lot of things the moment she woke up from her deep slumber. She get to know the history of the Kingdom, the former rulers, but it was making her head hurts. How can she just cope up and absorb all of those information as quickly as she had been expected to? But then, something sparked inside her head. “I have a question.” She said, catching Ino’s attention. The latter stop assembling the maps, and books for a moment, which Devon could have sworn for another torturous moment she would spend inside Zachary’s study with Ino. “What would it be?” He glanced at his shoulder to look at her. “I’m just curious.” She said. “When did Zachary rose to the throne?” “The King you say?” Ino may have sounded nonchalant, but he is not. “Right when his parents die.” “What?” That was new to him. “Aren’t they an immortal?” “They are, but vampires perish at some circumstances, either when they are purposely killed.” That made her gasp. “So, they were killed?” She continue to pushed forward to her questions. She just couldn’t keep it at bay. “They are.” Ino began taking another books and placing them on the table. “Did you know who killed them?” Devon carefully asked. “We do, everyone knew who it is.” Ino chuckled, but there’s something on his laugh, which she couldn’t point out. “Who?” Why does her heart rate is racing strangely? It was just a mere question, isn’t it? “It was him.” Ino finally meet her gaze before he dropped the bomb. “It was the King who killed them.” Her eyes widened. Is he playing some tricks on her? But as they dwelled deeper, Ino let her know the reason why. The entire Kingdom actually knew the events of how their ruler smeared blood on his hands. They are cruel, the late Reinsworth couple, who was reigning the throne. Unlike Zachary, they rule the Kingdom with an iron hand. They are cruel, and mercy had not only been shown, but it was deprived. The people were offered none, but to suffer under their reign. That even their only heir, the child they conceived had not escape the fate they brew. It was disaster, and knowing, envisioning of every bits that took place before made Devon’s heart clean he’d. It mourned, the pain she felt and the anguish, which thrived inside of her is much more painful. It was if, Devon could feel what Zachary suffered before. How can somebody do that? How can somebody be cruel to the child—much worst to their own child who does nothing? “That’s cruel.” Knowing the truth saddened her greatly. “It is, but we are glad that the King had not inherited the bad blood that his parents have.” Ino said. “And we are glad that he found you finally, your highness.” “Do you really think I’ll be fit to rule beside him?” Although, she is still against that idea as Devon was still torn, she couldn’t help herself, but ask them to Ino. “No.” He was straightforward. “W—what…?” She was not expecting that sudden response from him. It made her nervous. “You do not fit the throne, you are not befitting to rule, but as I come to know you—" Ino disregard the books she was currently holding to face Devon. “I learn how happy the King had been since you came here. I’ve never seen him smile nor laugh. I’ve never seen that happiness he had until today, and I could say that even if you do not know how to rule, I’ll train you until you become somebody who would be deserving to stand alongside with our King and in front of our people, your highness.” Devon gnawed her lips. She was not expecting his response to be a no, but to say she least expect those words to come from Ino was beyond how could she described those feelings inside of her. It feels surreal. And they had touch her soul. How can somebody stay loyal for so long? They are ready to bend their wills for their king. They are prepared to do all means, which she knew Zachary deserve. He had been through a lot, and she was glad that he have some people around him like Ino, and the rest of whom she meet and run into within the Palace walls. At that moment, the door of the room were suddenly pushed opened. “Hello, guys.” It was Helena, who came trotting inside. The woman whom she had been looking for. “Helena?” Devon look at her. “H—hi.” She nervously laughs. She may not have been expecting to see Devon inside the study. But how dare she hide from her for days? Oh god! She had been looking For Helena exactly because of her questions. She had left her clueless about what having two mates mean. She had this feeling that Helena knew the reason behind what she was soughing after. “What are you doing here?” Ino looked at her. She gulps first before turning to look at Ino, tearing her eyes off to prevent herself from gazing back to Devon, whom the latter was raising her eyebrows already. Helena knew that she have a long way to go, before she could leave this room. “Well, I am just here to add another potion on the list.” She was trying her hardest not to throw any glance at Devon. “Is that so?” Ino said, but he could tell exactly that something is going on between Helena and Devon. “You can just go to the medicine—” “Oh, right! I almost forgive, well I needed to go then—” Helena said, almost ready to stormed out, but Devon stop here. “Wait!” She is not going to let her get away! Helena nervously turned around. As her gaze landed to Devon, she laughs. “W—well?” She pretended to be oblivious. But she won’t be able to fool her anymore! “We have some thing to get discussed.” Devon said. “But I have something urgent to do?” Hopeful, Helena uttered. “Then, I’ll accompany you.” Devon smiled softly at her, but her smile was suggesting something more. Ino interfered. “But we still have not yet finish—” But Devon cut him off. “I’ll be back as quick as I can!” Devon reassured him. Helena look back and forth between the two. “But the King said—" Yet before Ino could run after, the Kings order a lot of, Devon and Helena are already out of the door. He rubs his temples. Perhaps it would be better to wait for her as it seems whatever she is going to discuss with Helena appeared to be important. He just needs to get back here before the King came back first. As Ino worries, on the other hand, Devon was ecstatic to be finally out of that room, and to find Helena finally after her days of hiding. As she made sure that they had gotten away, she stop on her tracks. Helena bump behind her back. “O—ow!” She rubs her nose. “Careful, Devon!” But the latter only gave her an eye. As she turned around, Devon placed both of her hands on her waist. “Now, we really have something to discuss.” She crossed her arms. “W—what are you talking about?” Helena looked nervous. “You did not answer my question.” Devon put an emphasis through her words. Helena prevent herself from looking at her eyes. “I can’t—” She chew her lips, but Devon step forward. “Or you won’t?” Devon frowns. “It’s is just…” Helena’s voice turned low. “You don’t understand.” She added. “Then make me understand.” Devon says. Helena lifted her head. “Then come with me.” Helena suddenly had a serious expression far itched on her face. “To where?” Devon asked. She suddenly get intrigued as Helena began acting strange. “Follow me.” And so she is the one who lead her to nowhere unbeknownst to her. Helena seems careful. Devon followed suit behind her. What does her questions have that may have cause for her to act this way? Is it wrong to ask about two mates? It may not have been normal, but still that doesn’t say that it was wrong to speak about it, right? Unsure, Devon shook her head. She just needed to wait and see. Her eyes lingered to where Hehe a was leading her to. She isn’t familiar with the place, but it seems to be isolated. They were heading towards a forest, and she couldn’t see anybody who seems to visit here often. The grass stood high. The trees are more thicker, shades and the shadows are more darker, and although rogue, Devon could still feel the shudders running across her spine. She may have been used to hiding, but that doesn’t mean she had gotten used to at what lurking in the shadows as forest doesn’t offer much, but the danger, which are all waiting for its exact moment to pounce. As they move deeper, Devon saw a particular cabin, but it looks old and unlikely. It was covered by roots, which are all running around it. “We’re here.” Helena announced. “Where are we?” Devon curiously asked. “In my home.” Helena proudly said as she continuously walked towards its door. As she pushed it open, Devon is in awe. It looks exactly…like a home. Like it offers comfort same with a human abode. The inside seems warm. Everything are arrange neatly, unlike the way Helena dressed. She is a seer and so she was expecting to see her house more likely to how Lily’s room was before. The thought made her longs for that particular witch. She missed her, and the others, Devon wouldn’t deny it. Helena invited her inside. “Make yourself feel at home.” She said Devon sit towards the single wooden seat she found inside. “Now that we are here, would you answer my questions now?” She look up to Helena. “I will.” “But why do we need to get away as if it was something that shouldn’t be ask?” She frowns deeply. “Because it is.” Helena gaze at her and there was something on the way she stared at Devon. “To speak about two mates is a taboo, Devon.” “W—what?” She grew nervous. “It is because of the prophecy, Devon, and it doesn’t means good.” Now as she sit there, Devon felt her heart beat. Why does…why does it felt like her insides are churning as she heard exactly the same word being uttered—the prophecy. Intrigued, but afraid, Devon hardened her face. “Tell me.” She gulps. “Tell me about the prophecy, Helena.” @cycy
