CHAPTER 40: THE RETURN OF THE KING, THE FIRST GAME
Same with what had been announced, King Luther and Queen Nerissa had returned the next day from the Palace.
They had summoned every single maiden to greet them, but not so forth, before announcing that they should get dressed in regards towards the opening ceremony. It includes of 5 women, who had been sent in the Palace. Those 5 whom there is no assurance whether they could return alive or dead, breathing or another as the tradition continues. As it attest to boldness and courage, there would surely be some danger that would followed suit on their trail. Those 5 women were bold enough, if not force to bet their life for the throne next to the future King of Devonshire.
Ysabella stared at her reflection. The same solemn, and blank look stared back at her. She looks cold, same on the way how his father gazed down at her, coerced, coaxing Ysabella to join something that was against her beliefs.
She clenched her fist.
She was clad on a fine dressed it was reddish in colour, which speaks of bravery. Weaved to express her position as an Alpha’s daughter, who also carried royal bloods on her. But being a royal isn’t actually about the luck, about the fortune and good fate that many expect about. They may go envious to her, but had never seen what was it like behind closed doors. What was the real happenings she had gone through just because of being born with a breathen, who seeks power. Her family, and her father who would do all means just so he could make sure that they would stood atop, their name never forgotten as it Mark a powerful pack.
If chosen to be a Queen, she knew how pleas he would be like. Her father would be gratified towards the extent of how much it would benefit him.
“My lady?” Matilde calls for her. She made two consecutive knocks, before opening the door of her room.
“I’m coming.” Ysabella uttered, before wearing a mask she had always gotten used to, because surely today, some of his men, if not her father—they would be present to watch.
Ysabella turned her back from the mirror, the heavy heart and the will she carries to stay alive is what something she was hanging from the thread as of the moment.
Even if she won’t get chosen, Ysabella needed to stay alive.
On the other hand, Nerissa speaks none to the King. When he said that it is a must to return back had she look forward that their return would means the beginning of the ceremony. She felt baffled. She was plotting to save her son, and yet, King Luther was here, pushing forwards something that she do not agree anymore. Something which her heart is totally against with.
“You did not mentioned about this.” Nerrisa expressed the pain expression on her voice as they remain seated to where the stadium was.
The people cheers. The wolves, every single person inside their Kingdom are present, and they are holding flags with different colours as those hue represent each candidate. Exquisite and happy. Enthusiasm is what bringing from the sea of crowds. Same with what she can recall. A reminder of how she stood there on the same place with the maidens right before she knew that her mate was the heir next in line and now he is the king, Luther. Nevertheless, same with a few girls, Nerissa was forced as well before.
“I am not going!” She growled after finding out that she will be sent in Devonshire Kingdom.
Her heart was totally against with it. How can she join something that could take away her happiness and freedom, much more killed her on the process?
Her face are reddened as she fumed.
She had just returned home from the training ground of their pack. Sweating as she stood up against her father, who ordered some of her servants to pack her belongings without her consent. It was late when she get inform that she would be joining the search for the next Queen. It was as if she would want to, but she don’t. Never had she wanted nor sought after the position she never asked for. To be a Queen is not part of her dreams. She is sick of the power, too fed up from the expectation that the entire pack are trying to put on her shoulders. Strength, and boldness, the courage she carry as a burden, although Nerissa was doubting slowly whether everything was right, and now here.
“Whether you like it or not, you just go, Nerissa.” His father stood mighty and high.
On the other hand, the servants would not meet her eye and lowered their head as the intensity of the halls increased to where she meet her father.
“I told you, I won’t go to such thing!” She gritted her teeth.
“And why wouldn’t you be?” He asked. Same with her, she could feel that he is slowly going furious, his beast may have been at how she was continuously challenging his decision. “You are my daughter and of course it is your duty, most of all, I am an Alpha and you must do what I say.”
“You are also my father, don’t you think so?” Nerissa clenched her fist, and try her hardest not to let alone her temperamental nature to take over as a dominion. “Is it so easy for you to offer my happiness, to sacrifice mine as I suffered—”
“If you are going to be the Queen.” He cut her off. “They are going to treat you right.”
“That’s not my point!” She said, growing mad. “And I told you I am not going, Father!”
“Do you know what will cost you if you did not go?” The Alpha uttered.
Nerissa felt a sudden fear gripped on her chest, because of the way his eyes express a cold emotion. Blankness, a bleak canvas which offered nothing, but so. Etching chilly.
“W—what do you mean?”
He faced her.
“Banishment, and forsaken.” He said firmly. “I’ banish you from our pack and withdrawn your title, striped from everything and you will no longer...be my daughter.”
“F—father!” Her eyes widened. Disbelief were written all over her face and so left with no choice, Nerissa was forced and that’s how she meet Luther.
The future King, and as well as her mate.
Nerissa shut down her orbs as those memories came back.
“Why?” She asked again, when she earned no response.
Was it hard to answer her question? Or is he hiding something from her? Never had she doubted Luther, but as of the moment, her heart and chest are filed with a lot of what if’s, and some things that was beyond her control.
“I am doing this for you, and for our son.” The king said.
“For me?” Nerissa laugh, but there is no humour, blank from emotion, deprived of what was that laugh for. “How can that be for me?” She asked, before opening her eyes to glanced at him. “You know how much I was against with it! This is not what I wanted, Luther, so how can you tell me that you are doing this for me? And for us? My son shouldn’t be sacrifice like this!”
“This is a must.” The King coldly replied. “And if you are against with it, then there’s nothing I could do.”
“My king, do you hear yourself now?” Nerissa’s forehead ceased.
“I am, and if you are against my decision I can understand it, my queen.” Luther uttered in a low voice. “But I am warning you not to interfere the tradition or same with who am I, I would be fair.”
“Luther!” Nerissa was shock.
She couldn’t believe that he had just threatened her. She opened her mouth to speak only to get sopped with the maidens are called. Force to drown her words, Nerissa stand up to greet them. But inside, her chest was aching. She was in pain for the threat she had gotten.
How can her king...do such thing? How can he sacrifice their children at a such extent? She thought, gulping away the lump, and wearing the mask she had never wore nor used for a very long time.
On the other hand as the ceremony started, the pack to where Ysabella came from had receive the letter she sent. The Alpha isn’t currently present and so the Beta was the one who had taken it in accord to his position.
“What it is?” Beta Alek uttered underneath his breath. An old scroll was has just been given to him.
The messenger lowered his head to show his respect. Clad on a linen, and armour to which the Beta could tell that he came from the Palace.
“It is from Lady Ysabella, Beta Alek.” He said. “It contains about the favour she seek to whoever may have been present here as the head.” The messenger added.
And so permitted, Beta Alek unfolded the letter, and began to follow the words written inside. They were scribbled, and his Lady Ysabella sought after an aid she promised. On her letter, she included that there is a small village to where the wolves suffered from an unknown disease, many had died, many had perish, and a few more are still being tormented. She included a name that it has been reported by a wolf named Ali, one of the travellers who are already helping the I’ll village alongside with his friend, Lily.
“A favour?” Beta Alek presumed.
He closed the letter and glanced at the messenger.
“Tell her that I’ll do what she says.” Alek said.
“I will.” Soon enough the messenger bid his farewell to go back to the Palace once more.
As he left, Alek proceed, preceding to where the healers was. They are the ones who cured those who are sick. They may have been incomparable to what the Palace have, but they are trained, their skills will speak of about themselves although they do not rely on magic, but herbs and towards their own ability.
It didn’t take long for him to reach where they are.
The first thing that greeted Alek was a woman, who have a handfuls of work. She seems. To be absorbs towards the book she was reading, lost in thought as she failed to noticed his presence, not until he knock on the door.
“B—beta Alek!” The woman jump, and clambered on her, totally not expecting to see him there. “What are you doing here?” She quickly placed the book down and walk to where he was. “I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that you are here.”
“That’s alright, Mika.” Beta Alek reassured her. “I 2as just here to ask you for a favour coming from Lady Ysabella.”
“Oh, Lady Ysabella?” The latter seems curious and intrigued.
“Yes.” Beta Alek nodded his head. “I may have ask you, and the others to be sent towards a small village that she speaks of. She said they were sick, and neither the one who was helping them could tell what kind of illness it was whether the source of it.” Alek relay her message.
“That’s weird then.” Mika hold her chin. “You say that somebody was helping them, right? Then can I ask from what species they come from?”
“A wolf, and the other one was a witch as I can remember from her letter.” Alek stated.
“Oh, that seems serious.” Mika frowns. “If a witch couldn’t even tell what it is, then I must really take a look.” She lifted her head to look at him straight on his eyes. “I’ll bring two of my people.”
“And I’ll let some warriors to escort you.” Beta Alek said seriously. “We couldn’t let you risk coming without being guarded. No one knows what would be there, although Lady Ysabella seems to trust them.”
“Thank you, Beta.” Mika smiled at him.
But unbeknownst to the pair, it wasn’t a diseases that they will soon encounter.
