Chapter 27

1800 Words
Time passed by, and my wedding with Dauis was now fast approaching. Currently, I’m lazily lying on my bed in a prone position with my legs held up high as I playfully sway them to and fro. Rereading my last assignment. I was mostly staying at home for the last two weeks after that incident. The boredom is making me crazy. It has been my longest period of staying, doing nothing other than reading. I miss my previously active life. I even had to resign from my job abroad and was stuck here. I wanted to go out and find adventure and thrill. My body and mind needed it, but I promised dad that I would help them with the company, but was only told that I could do that provided that I stayed home until the wedding. The sudden ringing of my cellular phone distracted me from my current state. “Hello” “Hey there, how are you doing?” “Well, Roldan, you might have guessed that boredom is starting to kill me, and I must say to you that you are right.” “Oh child, getting married doesn't mean that you just stay at home all the time. Go out and enjoy yourself.” “I don't have any idea of what I am even gonna do from outside of my house. You know me.” “Yeah, so why don't you come over here and have dinner with us to celebrate.” “Celebrate for what?” “For your upcoming marriage.” “It is for my death!” I exclaimed and rolled my eyes at him as if he saw me. He laughed at my remark. I know I may be just overreacting, but one thing is for sure, I can feel that my death is coming. “Are you coming?” he asks me again, still holding his laugh. “Okay, I’m coming.” I agreed, so he could stop barging at me. I knew very well that he wouldn't stop until he got to get me to say yes. He told me that it would be at their house and I should come early so we could catch up on time. I said and hung up the phone. It’s still early, so I still have a lot of time to practice death at home. Dead people do nothing and I am no different from them now. I lay back down staring at the ceiling when my phone started to ring again. “What is it this time, Roldan? You sure are making fun out of my boredom, huh”, I thought to myself. I picked up the phone and, without looking at the screen, I spoke immediately. “What now? Am I coming okay? You don't have to make fun of me.” “I… Uh– are you referring to me?” responded the other line in an indifferent tone. Hearing the voice, I immediately took my phone away from my ears, to look closely at the monitor, only to see Dauis's name on it. How reckless. I shrunk back in bed and calmly said, “I thought you were somebody.” “I thought so too.” “So what's new?” I asked, arching my brows. What does he possibly want this time? He was in charge of the preparation, not to mention that I purposely never took place in it. I don't want to participate. If I were to choose, I want it done by the judges so we can skip the drama and all. It was just a ploy anyway. However, Dad and my two brothers strongly disagreed. “The wedding is approaching…” I heard him say. “Yes I know, and?” I asked, not getting his idea. What if it was approaching? as if I would run away from him again. I shouldn't have made any fuss or my dad would surely have been mad at me. “What do you need?” I asked impatiently. “Well, I need a hand on this. We need a few errands to do and we are good at going, a few touches from this and that.” “What exactly do you need? You told me that you would have everything prepared, right? All I needed to do was just show myself on the given day.” I asked again, this time louder and with a hint of anger. Why can't he just tell me directly what he needs? He sighed deeply and said, “Okay, I will pick you up at 7 for dinner. I will discuss this with you.” “I have some matters to attend to. I can’t. How about next time?” “Where to?” He curiously asked. “I am having dinner with my friends. If it is not that important, you can tell me by the phone, how is that?” “I’m coming with you…” he said, determined. “Wait, what? Did you just say that you were coming?” shocked at his sudden decision. “You heard me right. I will pick you up at 6.” he finally said. He just decided to come over without even asking if it would be fine and comfortable for me to see him meet my friend. He immediately bid goodbye and hung up the phone. Oh, great, just great Dauis. It doesn’t mean that we’re soon to be married, you can eventually order me around. I'm not going to follow you, not now, not ever. Determined not to bring him along, I plan to leave earlier than I am supposed to. I'm not going to let you order me around. Who do you think you are? I started to resume what I was previously doing. I wondered how I would pull through my remaining days here without making myself mentally ill. Sitting in the office or the house is making me crazy, and now having a clingy husband-to-be is more likely to be suicide for me. Engrossed in what to do- I still work at the agency in the technical department in the meantime. Since they have their current operation and I have left here, I had better help with their tech. Dept. at home. Interfering signals to be exact and hacking some. I'm not a tech-savvy person though, but I tried my best. It is my way of keeping myself sane. I am more on the field, so I guess this is all new and all I can do, and it's a plus thing for me as I don't need to report and expose myself. After a long time of working, I felt a stiff pain in my back. I stretch myself and later prepare to leave. I don't want to wait for him or take him with me. While heading my way out, I can't keep myself from smiling evilly at the thought. He would surely be enraged. I can picture his annoyed expression as soon as he learns that he was left behind. I mean, he often gets what he wants in his ways, sure he will be more than pissed. And I'm not gonna let him anytime soon have everything he wished. Grinning at the idea, I walked past my car and decided to use my BMW M 1000 RR superbike. It was one of my favorite. This was Daven's present to me after I told him that I wanted to own one. It only takes some time when I reach their residence. They both welcomed me warmly and happily. His wife was so happy that I took the time to drop by and share dinner with them. They don't have a child, so being a close acquaintance of her husband, she treated me like such. We had a few chit-chats and later on his wife served the delicious food to us. My identity was not hidden from his wife’s knowledge. She knew all about me, thanks to Roldan, who had been so talkative and couldn't seem to keep a secret from her. But I admire her for how she respected my hunting and understood my struggles. And she has been constantly advising me on random things. Thus, when this news about my marriage came to her, she specially requested her husband to have me dine with them to celebrate. “Thank you for accepting our invitation,” she said as we all sat in the dining room. “No, I thank you because you took the time to celebrate it for me,” I said happily. I feel so warm. “You have always been the daughter I never had, so this is for you. For your coming marriage life.” At that, she raised her glass for a toast. After we drank our drinks, they congratulated me and I was happy. ‘Am I happy because I'm getting married? No! I was just happy because somebody had taken the initiative to celebrate it. Who wouldn't'? As we started to dig into our food, my phone started to buzz. I apologize and excuse myself for taking the call. I smirked at the number registered on the screen. I was surprised though. I clicked on the answer button and calmly said… “Hello?” “Where are you?” Asked the man at the other end of the line. He sounded so serious and was holding on to his temper. I smiled, feeling triumphant at my actions. “At dinner,” I said nonchalantly. “Oh, I remember that you told me that you'd come with me. I'm sorry, my bad. It slipped out of my mind.” “Yeah, I knew you did it intentionally,” he said, sounding annoyed. “Why not wait for me there? It won't take long here. Well, maybe.” “Okay, I will wait for you.” he just said and hung up the phone. Going back to food, no one has ever asked me about the call, but they overheard it, loud and clear. Over dinner, we talked about random things, clearly avoiding the issue of my upcoming marriage. We sometimes laugh at Roldan's corny jokes, watching the two, observing her. Even in the corniest joke Roldan had, she ends up genuinely laughing at him. Maybe this is what love makes these people romantically tied with each other. I also once wanted to live a harmonious life, but this event turned out otherwise. After dinner, I thanked them again for the dinner and bid them to go home. But something came up to me and I decided instead to stay for a night in a hotel. I wanted to further anger him until he could take no more than to back off.
