“Where have you been?” Dauis called out from the kitchen the moment he saw me enter the house.
“Wandering around,” I responded shortly, without glancing in his direction. Instead, I walked past him and went to our room. He followed behind silently.
“Next time, you should inform me about your whereabouts so I won't be damn worried and stay up the whole night.” he said furiously.
His annoyance got pissed. Is he scolding me now? I turned around to face him and said,
“Excuse me, first and foremost, we agreed that one shouldn’t interfere with one's individual business. Secondly, I didn’t tell you to stay up and worry about me the whole night, so it wasn’t my problem anymore.”
“Ale, wait… Did you just say that let’s not care for each other? That your business wasn't mine?”
"Would you?" I asked, arching my brows at him.
"you tell me!"
“That was what we agreed on, right?”
“Wait. Just give me a minute. Can you elaborate to me why we ended up like this?” He asked, frowning at me.
“Why shouldn't we? It was expected, don't tell me that you were carried out by that?” I asked back while smirking at him.
Okay, I was just masking my indifference. It hurt, and I don't want to treat him this way. But we are getting further and deeper into this relationship. I have to remind myself that everything we have right now is just a lie.
A lie…
For days, weeks, and months passed, we treated each other like the last time we had. Yes, we sleep together, have s*x like every other couple does, but I still treated him coldly.
Despite my current behaviour, Dauis continued to be patient and treated me fairly, and it made me fall for him harder this time. Until I couldn’t act more. I naturally changed for him, but my plans still stay.
Anyway, I could still be happy while making my plans progressive. I reasoned out.
We lived harmoniously for the following months. He even often took me on his business trips and made memories there together.
I was happy, and so he was, until one day, it was already late at night and it was almost past 12 when he had not returned home yet.
It made me sick and worried, knowing that it was out of his daily routine except that he was busy, but he would still call me even in the middle of his meetings just to inform me that he would be late.
Today was different. He didn’t call, not even a message. And when I made a call, the operator would only answer, asking to leave a message. So, technically speaking, he turned off his phone.
“What the f*ck Dauis, where are you now?” I screamed in frustration. Just then, I remember calling his assistant. Maybe he knew, after a few rings, he picked up.
“Hello, good evening Mrs. Suarez?” He greeted her politely.
“Uh– Hi, good evening, Miss Melissa, by chance, are you with Dauis, or does he have some meeting at this late hour?” I asked.
“ Oh, I'm sorry, but he didn’t report to the office today, he just called to instruct me to cancel all his appointments.”
“Okay, never mind, by the way thank you.” I said and ended the call without waiting for her response.
‘Where could he be? He wasn’t like this.’ I worriedly thought.
“Dear Lord, wherever he may be, please keep him safe.” I silently prayed.
Just I was about to go down, my phone started to ring, so I hurriedly took it and answered without even looking for the caller. I anxiously answered with the thought that it was Dauis.
“Hello?” at first, all I could hear was a man panting from the other end. He was probably running, but why?
“Ale— Ale,” he called out with a controlled voice.
“Mang Kanor?” I asked, astounded, while confirming that it was him.
“Listen—” upon hearing his urgency, my heart pounded vigorously. Something must have been happening. Or he could be in great danger too.
“Their group has finally arrived,” he immediately informed me.
“W-Where are you?” my voice quavered when I heard the news. And the thought that he sounded so like that, was that he might have encountered them.
“I'm stuck here!”
“Wait for me, I’m coming.”
“No! Wait for my further instructions, they might notice you if you come now. Just wait, okay?”
“But—” toot-toot. All I could hear was the beeping sound of the ending call.
“F*ck!!! F*ck!” I repeatedly screamed out in frustration. I slumped down against the floor while leaning on the wall, trembling.
I’m terribly worried. Inhaling a large amount of air, filling in my lungs to muster my courage, and exhaling it slowly repeatedly for seconds.
Feeling a little bit relaxed now, I dialed someone's number.
“Hello, prepare everything, we will go hunting in a few days.”
“Copy that!”
I am starting to enrage now, finally, the time has come, I just hope that this group is the one I was all along been looking for.
Totally forgot his whereabouts.
I dialed another number. This time, I need to have Mang Kanor’s specific location. I can’t stand waiting a few more minutes here.
I must do something.
“Hello, look for his current location.” I quickly said.
“Okay—” he replied willingly. Hearing his keyboard tapping from the other line, I know and am positive that he can do and locate it right away.
“Ale, Road 62, near the old dumpsite, south of Mato-bato.”
“Okay.” and quickly ended the call.
It was a few miles away from here, so it was sure to take time to get there.
I ran to the garage as quickly as I could. The bike roared into life and strode away in the darkness of the night.
I first stopped at Mang Kanor’s place. I have access there so it wasn’t hard for me to get in. Changing my current clothes to leather ones, I put on my mask and changed my hair wig. I always put on different faces to hide my identity. Completely changed into another person, where no traces are left of the real me.
Satisfied with what I saw, I took a riffle and some extra bullets, a 45 caliber pistol on my waist, and shoved a swiss knife at my leg.
“Mom, Guide me today” I silently prayed.
I removed my plate number and left it at Mang Kanor before I headed out. I was speeding real fast, hoping to arrive as early as possible.
Mato-bato.
I turned off the engine a few kilometers away from the exact place. I did the running and walking, very carefully, assuming that maybe there were some landmines being planted around the vicinity.
Indeed, armed men are scattered throughout the area.
I dropped myself to the ground, cautiously crawling under the buses and trucks that were parked. I stood up. Leaning my back against the wall when I saw a man smoking, guarding his post. I slid, stood at his back, and tapped him on the shoulder. When he turned around to me, I quickly grabbed his arm, kicked his calf, and squeezed his head to death.
One, two, three, four… All were down at a glance without using a gun.
But, just as I was about to launch at the nearby truck, one held me and covered my mouth. s**t!!
I was astounded and was starting to fight back when it pressed me to the wall.
“Shhhh…”
I quit fighting when I realized that he wasn’t harming me.
“What are you doing here?” he whimpered.
“Ale…”
“I came to help you.”
“I said, you wait.”
I can't. I can stand doing nothing while you’re risking your life.
“You know, you should listen sometimes. I had already been there since afternoon, and as much as I could, I tried to avoid them. Now,
If one saw their men lying lifeless there, it would surely create a commotion.” I could only listen to him say.
“They have a shipment now, they are waiting for the arrival.
“Good then,”
“Good?”
“Let’s rock and roll then, so we can get to their heads.
“She wasn’t here.”
“I know, but hearing an unsuccessful shipment will piss her,” I said and handed him the extra riffle I got.
“You’re crazy.”
“So are you. Now let's get it done.” He nod at me and I signaled him to walk at 45 while I walk straight ahead.
