Chapter 43

1556 Words
When I got home the next morning, Dauis wasn’t home yet. It was very unusual for him and it made me wonder why the sudden changes. Even his phone was still out of reach. Decided to deal with it later, I took a bath first and went straight to bed. I had been tired from last night's event, and his whereabouts were added to stir up my day, making me feel drained, and then immediately fell asleep. Not just that, I easily get tired, even doing the smallest things I have done lately. Not realizing how long I had slept, I somehow had sensed that someone was kissing me. I thought it was just a dream, but when I half-opened my eyes to see who it was, a blurred figure of a man hovering on top of me. I barely recognized him so I blinked a few more times to clear my blurring sight. Just then, I realized that it was him all after all. “Hmmm” I hummed as I stretched my arms around his neck, kissing him back. “Hey, beautiful.” He greeted me with a broad smile but with very tired eyes. He looks so weak. “Hey, you’ve just arrived?” I asked and sat up. “Yeah, I missed you.” he said and hugged me back tightly. “I missed you too. I was worried.” I informed him. He should know so he wouldn’t do it again. “I’m sorry, something came up at the bar and I needed to be there,” he immediately explained. “Hmm, it’s okay, but next time you have to call me, okay? I was calling you but your phone was unreachable.” “Oh, I forgot to check, perhaps it was an empty bat.” “Okay, you must be very tired then, come and have some rest," I invited him. " We will have dinner after you rest.” I continued and tapped the other side of the bed, gesturing for him to lay beside me, which he did. He hugged me and fell asleep right away. Provoking him isn’t necessary because I know that, in the very first place, he was lying in my face. Lying openly to me… Funny it is that I have now become the exact person I used to hate to be in the future. ‘A worried housewife left in the house cold and alone while her husband was lying openly in her face.’ I grin at the thought of mocking myself for it. Now, remembering what he just said, I thought about how he could be in the bar when the truth was even his assistant didn't know his whereabouts. Not just that, he didn't report to work for the whole day. He even turned off his cellular phone. What am I if I believe in his lies? Feeling annoyed by his lies, I still let it slip for now, as I don't want to consume another energy on his nonsense. I laid back again. This time, I was resting on his chest listening to the thudding sound there. Hoping that one day this beating will beat me. But I doubt it! How and when I felt for this man, I don't remember. It remained a question for me. All I know was that I woke up one morning willing to risk everything for him. I just hope that he does the same. Later that evening, after dinner, we both sat on the couch watching television when a news headline flashed on the screen. “Let’s turn off the television, nothing’s important in there to look at anyway,” he quickly said and reached out for the remote controller. But I was a bit nearer and faster than he was, so, I grabbed it before him and pressed the volume up button to increase its volume. “Shh… I want to hear the news.” I said and gestured for him to be quiet by putting my index finger on my lips and pulling my knees on my chest as I carefully listened to every word that the reporter had to say. “Breaking news, An unnamed syndicate group was arrested by the city police of mato-bato, around the old dump site last night. The said group who was allegedly supposed to be waiting for the shipment of a high-powered gun was attacked by two unidentified people before the policemen arrived. But before that, it said that a female voice sent audio of herself informing the authorities to come over as they needed backup. 29 are dead, 7 were seriously ill while tied to each other to the post and it said that few have escaped when the authorities came in the sais place. The shipment, on the other hand, was situated not far from the place. What shocked them was that the 5 men inside that submarine were all dead and the shipped guns were all intact. Meaning, that it has remained untouched. For now, we will wait for further news updates on these incidents. End of report. Partly satisfied with the news, I heave a sigh of relief, yet still a little disappointed that few have managed to escape. Just when I was about to turn in Dauis's direction, I unexpectedly saw how engrossed he was at the news. He looked displeased about it, even enraged. “Hey, are you okay?” I called out. He blinked a few times upon hearing me and he immediately masked himself with a smile. A very sweet smile and said: “O–Of course, why?” He stammered. “Nothing,” I responded, not convinced. Why does he look enraged about the news? Or was I just paranoid and suspicious? I thought as I shook my head, throwing my negative thoughts away. “Let’s go to bed now,” he said and headed away to bed without waiting for my response. He was done with his acts and now, he was back to the old Dauis I knew. Or, perhaps, he was just tired and wanted to have some rest. I reasoned to myself. I followed him and laid my back beside him, resting my head on top of his chest. As he encircled his arms around me, it was accidentally laid on top of my bandaged shoulder during last night’s encounter. He peeked at it and pointed out. “What happened to this?” he asked with creased brows. “This? It’s nothing, I accidentally bumped yesterday in the garden.” I said nervously, avoiding his soul-piercing eyes. SHIT! How come I forgot about this? Dumb Ale. I cursed myself “Pricked or cut? Next time, you should be careful. Tomorrow, I will have the gardener take a look at it and have it clear so you won’t get hurt. And also, we will go to the hospital to see if there is no infection.” He suggested I panicked when I heard him. It couldn’t be! He will only know. “There is no need for that, I already disinfected it and besides, it’s just a small cut. Nothing to worry about,” I lied. “Okay, if you say so,” he said dismissively. “Whew! I thought I was going to be a lump of dead meat now.” He lay down again and closed his eyes without saying a word. I wondered why it was that he had been acting strangely lately. Or would I rather say that the last few months were his acts to make everyone believe our lies? He had gone beyond his habitual chores. And now this. When he saw my wound… And another thing, he seemed to be so anxious about the previous TV news that his mood on TV changed drastically. What does it do to him? If I had not known him, and he happened to not have been with Allen and Daven since they were little, I would start to suspect that the encounter had something to do with him. Or does it? Do I really know him? Or maybe I was too blind to see what it actually was? I closed my eyes, still pondering some issues. On the other hand, Dauis, who was currently pretending to be asleep, had a deep thought about the matter. Ale’s constant night out and lies, and then her wound. He knew that she lied about the garden part. And then, her interest in that news on TV. Just then he realized that, before he fled to escape that night, he sure hit that woman- or was it even a woman? On its shoulder. I can’t be mistaken, I knew I did. And I’m positive about it. But is it even possible? How come? He had the surveillance cameras checked and she did not go out for the whole night. Maybe it was just a coincidence. He thought. He was so lost. She’s now back and he cannot afford or offend her. Not a single stand. When she found out about my marriage to Ale, she was so furious that she immediately decided to stay there for good. I know that someday, she and Ale will meet each other. And it would be a disaster as both have a bad temperament.
