AWFUL AUDITION

947 Words
When I left for my audition, I had thought the hardest part of my day would be walking into that building. I had been wrong. I clutched my application with sweaty palms as I walked down the hallway towards the door with the large audition banner in front of it. The moment I stepped in the audition hall, I knew I didn’t belong. It wasn’t just the fact that I could see no one else with an application letter or some files. No, it was because I could tell I was different from all the other girls. The walls of the audition hall were painted white, completely polished to a shine, and a single long table dominated the center of the hall. A table with three judges sitting behind it. In the middle of a table sat a young woman with perfect posture, raven – dark hair and eyes so sharp, I felt they could slice me open from the other side of the hall. It only took a glance at her face for my body to freeze. I recognized her, Selene Viscount, current leader of the Viscount pack, and… my soon-to-be sister-in-law. Also, the one in charge of the audition. It just so happened that at that time, her eyes darted over the door and she spotted me. A smirk tugged at the corner of her lips as she beckoned me over. “You’re late,” she said calmly, her expression bored as she began flipping through a bunch of files on her table until she landed on one, Mine. I glanced at my watch and frowned. I wasn’t late, I knew that and so did she. I had arrived ten minutes early because of how nervous I was, I still knew better than to refute my interviewer. So, I bowed and apologized, “I—I am here for the audition.” Selene’s gaze flickered up and down my body, her eyes filled with disdain as her gaze landed deliberately on the faint scar on my cheeks - Ella’s gift, still yet to completely fade. “So, it’s true,” she murmured, “The rejected one.” Besides her, the two other interviewers kept silent, but their furrowed brows told me that they had no idea what Selene was talking about, but they both chose to keep silent. Heat rushed through my body as I clenched my fists, “I did not come here to discuss my personal life.” the words left my lips before I could stop them. I tried to keep my voice steady, but I knew I failed. Her brows twitched as a smile tugged at the corner of her lips. She leaned back on her leather chair, crossing one leg over another as her gaze narrowed, “That’s convenient.” she whispered, “Because your personal life is the only thing interesting about you.” I blinked, her words hitting me harder than I thought they would. A growl almost escaped my lips, but I forced myself to keep calm, “I came here for an audition. That’s all.” “Fine.” Selene waved her hand and pointed in front of her, “Come up here and show me what you’ve got. Convince me you are not another one of the struggling actresses outside who can’t act to save their lives.” Once again, her words burned, but I refused to let that break me. I straightened my back and walked forward until I was right in front of the judges, my mind racing as I thought about the movie script I had received earlier in the day. I had spent the whole day revising what I was going to do, and so I gave the best performance I could. Every movement, every line, and every note of the role, I poured all my frustration into it. The role I was auditioning for was for a tragic supporting character in the movie. Small, but notable enough that it could even be considered a side lead role. When I finished my performance, silence blanketed the hall. For a very brief moment, I thought I had surprised her. Then, she laughed, “That was the worst performance I have ever seen in my life.” She snorted, “Do you really believe that just making a weak effort could make you an actress? This is an industry of wolves, and by your performance I can tell you are a wolf without claws.” The words stung. Unlike the other interviewers, I could tell exactly what she really was saying. This rejection wasn’t just professional, it was personal. She hated me, though I still did not know why. But I could tell by the pure fiery rage in her eyes whenever she stared at me. “I… I don’t understand.” I whispered, my pulse racing as I felt my world crash around me. With a smirk on her face, Selene twisted her head, “Of course you don’t.” She leaned forward, “Like I said, Lily, that was bad, to say the least. Do yourself a favor and disappear from my sight.” I could not breathe, my throat burned as the sting of rejection clouded my mind. Still, I forced myself to move, forced myself not to cry until I walked out of the building and began to walk towards my car. Her laughter still echoed in my ears long after I had left the hall. But beneath the humiliation I felt, something else stirred within me, A vow. If Selene was expecting me to disappear and stop following my dreams. Then, she had no idea who I was.
