A Day in A Life of Death

TEN

“So what now Nemesis? Are you going to lock me down here in your house forever?” I said as I slammed one of her books on the table. I hate this kind of setup! I don’t want to stay here without even going out to stroll or buy something.

“Well, if I had to… yes” she stared at me seriously and went close to me. REALLY? I DON’T HAVE ANY FREEDOM HERE?

“What?! Oh, come on! I also have a life. I need to go out”

“I can’t trust you. You may go somewhere else and never come back”

“I will come back. I don’t have anywhere else to go remember?”

“You need to remember your mission first. If you do, I will let you go” She really annoys me. I feel like I want to kick her.

“Oh come on, I feel like a prisoner here! And I don’t know when I will remember things again. My head is not hurting lately.”

“That is why you have to stay here” OH REALLY? SHE DOESN’T WANTS ME TO PASS THIS HUH?

I frowned at her before I go back to my room and lock my door. I hate it, I hate her. What is she thinking? That I am not having a difficult time here? For God’s sake, I am the one here who is having the hardest time. I also want to remember everything but I can’t. She’s pushing me and I am also pushing myself even more! Even though I try so hard, I cannot remember. I CANNOT!

I sat down on my bed and closed my eyes. I need to calm myself. I should not be like this. I need to think properly and do something.

As I opened my eyes, I saw the open window inside this room. That is when I realized… that I can slip through it and escape. Bright idea Thanatos, you can do it!

I stood up and look from left to right. I think there are no CCTV cameras here that can monitor my movement in this room. That is good news. I went to the door that I locked as I stick my ears on its surface. I tried to listen to Nemesis if she is coming here or not. I heard nothing. It is very quiet outside. So I guess it is the right time to escape. I should not waste my time.

I quickly ran towards the open window. I immediately go out from there and carefully walk away from that house. When I got a bit far away, I ran as fast as I could.

“YES!” I said full of joy. At last! I escaped! I am not her prisoner anymore. Now, where should I go huh?

I look back and I see nothing. Nemesis did not notice that I am out already. No one is following me and that is great! Now, where should I begin hmm... I got some money in my pocket that I steal from Nemesis’ table earlier. She did not even notice that too haha! I think I am good at this, sneaking.

I walk as I look around the streets. I saw a pizzeria nearby. I am craving! I want to have some pizza!

I ran towards that place quickly. I cross the streets. I even saw and heard some vehicles stopping and horning in front of me. Maybe that is a sign of respect? They might know that I am the grim reaper? Well, how did they know that?

I looked at the vehicles and I just bow my head.

“Are you crazy? Get out of the way!”

“Look at the sign young man! You should not be passing the road by this time!”

“It is a ‘go’ sign for cars you, i***t!”

I was surprised when the drivers started to yell at me. That’s why I stop bowing down to them and I walk fast to get out in the middle of that road.

I thought they are praising me and they are happy to see me. I guess I am wrong.

Well, I don’t care about that anymore. All I care about right now is my tummy. I am already here in front of the pizzeria. I am very excited to order and eat here!

“Here is your double cheese Hawaiian pizza, sir”

“Thank you!” I said as the waitress served the pizza right in front of me. It smells good and I am sure that it tastes good too! She left me the receipt of my order and I just put it inside my pocket. This is my first ever purchase and it should be kept!

After a few seconds of staring at the beauty of the delicious pizza, I started to get a slice. Then after that, I took one bite.

“Heaven!” I said as all the delicious taste of the pizza burst right into my tongue. I can’t help myself but feel this happiness inside me. It feels like it is my first time eating a pizza. Well, I guess it is really my first time! I do not think that when I was a grim reaper back then I am eating something like this, or am I even eating? Nemesis told me that they don’t feel anything like hunger so maybe I am not able to taste this good pizza over here back then.

“Mmmm… it tastes so good!” I said once again when I have the second bite, third, fourth, and last bite. I am having the second slice already and I must say that I can eat this whole pizza alone. Or maybe I should order another?

“Can I have another one of this please?” I said full of excitement to the waitress at the counter beside my seat. I haven’t finished eating my first whole pizza but I feel like I want another one. I am so hungry and craving for this!

When I look around, most of the people are staring at me. Why? What did I do? Did I do something wrong? I just ordered another pizza, is it a sin or something? Is it bad?

I just ignored them and I continued eating. It is really delicious! I love it!

*wind blows hard*

I stopped from what I was doing when I felt the strong wind brushing my skin. I felt so cold so suddenly.

Wait, I felt this kind of sensation before…

I look around this place, and the people around me right now seem busy eating their own pizza or talking to their friends. What is this? Am I the only person here who felt so cold right now?

Maybe…

That woman…

The woman that I saw before… maybe she is here?

I stood up quickly when I saw something outside of the glass window of this place.

Long hair, white dress… that is her! She is walking outside as if she is going to someplace… is she here to find me? But she is walking away, she has not even noticed that I am here! Her attention is not on me, as if she is following someone else…

I need to talk to her.

I ran towards the door of this place and I quickly opened the door. I walk out immediately.

“Sir, your pizza!”

I have heard someone shouted inside the pizzeria but I ignored her. I glued my eyes to that woman wearing a white dress with long straight hair. She knows something about me. I am sure about that. She called me by my name before. But what is her purpose? Maybe she can help me with my mission?

I followed her from place to place. She is just walking at the side of the street. Where is she going? Why is she here? Why do I keep seeing her around? Maybe she is connected with me or something?

She is getting faster so I walked towards her even faster. I need to chase her. I need to know why she is here and how did she know me.

I am surprised when she started to walk across the street. I ran and followed her but suddenly…

*beep! beep!*

*woosh!!!*

A CAR ALMOST HIT ME!

I stumbled and fell to the ground. Damn it. I look around and the woman that I am following is already gone! She just vanished! How did she do that? I just lost my eyes from her for just a few seconds then she is gone already?!

“Ah it hurts,” I said as I felt the pain from my legs. Damn it!!! I have some scratch, it is somehow bleeding. I am getting so lucky today huh.

“Hey, you”

I stop staring at my wound when I saw a pair of feet standing in front of me. I notice that she is wearing stilettos, red stilettos. I slowly look at her from her feet up to her face.

“Wow, you are beautiful” I suddenly said unconsciously. I should have not said that out loud!

She really is beautiful. She is wearing a red coat and a black fitted skirt. Her short hair is well curled. She looks like a rich boss in a company!

“I know I am. Now are you going to stand up or you will just stay like that?”

Okay, I admit that she is beautiful but… I don’t think she is kind-hearted.

I stood up even though my legs hurt and then I looked at her. Well, I am a bit taller I must say. But I have seen her face closely now. She looks familiar to me. I feel like I have met her before but… I cannot remember.

“Do… you know me?” I asked her, but she just raised one of her eyebrows to me.

“I don’t think so. Now, if you are trying to hit on me I don’t have any interest. I guess you are alright except for that scratch on your legs so… here” I am surprised when she handed me fifty dollars from her red wallet. Oh, I guess red is her favorite color? “Buy some bandages or whatever ointment for your wound. And tip, do not block the road will ya?!”

After that, she just went back inside her car, a red car. I did not realize that my mouth is open while I am still staring at her. What is happening to me? I feel like I became a statue in front of her! As if I am stunned by her beauty. Well, yes I am stunned.

But…

There is another feeling of mine…that I saw her before or met her. My heart starts to race right now and I do not know why. Why am I feeling this way?

*beep!!!*

I went back to my senses when I heard her vehicle horn. That is when I started to move to the side of the road.

Her engine starts to run but my eyes are still glued at her until she became a tiny dot in my sight.

What is this feeling… I can’t describe it...

It feels like she is familiar, very very familiar to me…

No, it feels like she’s close to me as if we have shared some good memories before.
