Although Birk’s comments about the military were an indirect slur against her, Michi held her tongue admirably and did not answer his charges at once. Instead, she chose to ask technical questions about the Makers’ weapons and their effects, then asked Birk to demonstrate some of them. He looked for a moment as though he might comment on her interest in weaponry, but he, too, seemed bent on showing restraint Both people knew how crucial this new relationship of theirs was, and neither wanted to jeopardize it with rash remarks.
