Rose   Matthias’s face grew stern and hard.  “Heather was removed from the Fortress.” I felt a pang of guilt.  “Why, because of me?” “Heather was allowed to stay here as an employee.  Her duty was to serve you loyally and faithfully.  She was sacked for dereliction of duty.” I wasn’t sure what to think about that.  When Heather had turned on me, it hurt me deeply.  I had thought I was more than just a “job” to her, I had thought we were friends, I thought of her like a little sister.  I still didn’t think she was a bad person.  I thought she was just an immature girl without a lot of self-esteem who was trying to fit into a world that she didn’t really belong to.  If the vampires she idolized said “Rose is bad,” she couldn’t help but jump on that bandwagon.   She had been my first rea
