Natalia: I didn’t say anything as I left his office. Because I knew that there was nothing more to be said. He hadn’t asked me to stay after the last bite. He hadn’t said anything at all, really. Just sat there, silent as stone, his dark eyes fixed on me like I was some sort of puzzle he hadn’t decided whether to solve or smash to pieces. But I knew this. Something inside of me stirred, a feeling that I did not think would happen. Even the idea of me sitting at the same table with him was not one that I expected. And yet here I was, leaving his office. The tray was empty now. Everything seemed to be different, calmer, and yet nothing made sense, at least not to me. I shut the door quietly behind me and started down the hall toward my wing, my heels muffled by the thick carpet. I did
