Chapter 7 Cassidy wouldn’t have really noticed the sirens if Jo hadn’t pointed them out. Seattle had them now and then. She’d spent several days staying in a youth hostel and exploring New York before taking the train up to college. The sirens had been so constant that Seattle sounded strangely quiet in comparison. But when two police cars raced toward them from opposite directions along First Avenue then both turned sharply onto Yesler Way, she felt a chill that had nothing to do with the cold. “Please keep going.” Her prayer wasn’t answered.
