Mia
I arrived at Blair's house. After I unlocked the door and entered, I left the keys on the small table at the entrance, hung up my bag and sat on the couch. Then I covered my face with my hands as I began to feel the weight of what was happening, why? When did everything change?
I was blind not to have seen what they are capable of, they would do anything to achieve their goal. I wondered if I have been so absorbed with my work so much that I couldn't see the truth that was in front of me. The only thing I know is that I fought to sustain our marriage until the last day, I stopped socializing with friends and spending time with my parents, just to dedicate time to Jacob, time that he demanded of me and for what?
I shook my head, Clarisse unscrupulous and scheming, and Jacob is a mummy’s boy who couldn’t even face me. There is no way I will return to that house and be like another furniture there. I cannot bear to see the person who is the causes of my problems and misfortunes, every day. I would be betraying myself if I did. I don't understand their purpose for wanting me to come back, there is nothing left of the marriage. I just want my job back; they have taken away the last thing I had, but I will not allow them to win.
“You returned early today.” Blair said when she entered the house and found me sitting down. After leaving her purchases in the kitchen she sat next to me on the couch, but I remained silent gazing into space.
“What's wrong Mia?” Blair asked, stroking my back.
"I lost everything," I said, and felt a tear run down my cheek. I wiped it away and continued to do so because the tears wouldn’t stop.
"What are you talking about? Don't scare me." She hugged me over my shoulders and brought me closer to her body.
“The Andersons connived with the hospital authority to accuse me of being responsible for the death of a patient. So, I have been relieved of my position while an investigation is ongoing.
Blair gasped.
“That family, what that i***t Jacob did to you is not enough, now they want to destroy you, what the f**k? I'm sure you already told them that you were going to give that little man a divorce, what else do they want, the cruel woman never wanted you for her son.”
I nodded my head and continued: "And that's not all," I said
“Is there more?” She asks indignantly.
“She doesn't agree with the divorce, she wants me to go back to Jacob and pretend that nothing happened, she even dared to blackmail me.”
"This is the last straw, they are bastards," she stood up and went to get a glass of water, which she drank in a single sip. We were both silent for a while.
"I imagine you refused," she said, sitting in front of me, and handing me a glass of water.
“That's right, I just want to get my job back and have a new life away from them.”
Blair stayed silent, as if she was thinking.
“Why would they want you to come back? Jacob doesn't love you anymore.” He said in a sober state, and it bothers me a little.
"I'm sorry, darling," she apologized, because my face reflected the pain in my heart.
“It's the truth B, I can't deny it. At night I am tormented by nightmares, and every morning I am overwhelmed by reality.
“I don't want to get into matters that perhaps don't concern me, but there must be something else, a reason for them to want you to come back. That Mrs. Cruel can't stand you and Jacob apparently is interested in getting into every skirt he comes across.”
“I don't know, friend.” I sighed.
“We're going to talk to a friend who is a lawyer, I'll set up an appointment.”
"Yes, I need a lawyer to handle the divorce process and the problem at the hospital." I respond thoughtfully. Blair took her phone and made a call. After a few minutes, she ended the call and I looked at her expectantly.
“We're leaving right now; Lily just made time available for us.”
“What? So soon.”
“Yes, change out of that uniform and let's go now.” She said.
I got up and put on a pair of jeans with a linen jacket, and a footwear with low boot
Soon, we left the house and drove to the lawyer's office. Few minutes later, we arrived in front of a building that has over sixty floors. We entered, and used the elevator to go up to the office. We met the Lawyer as soon as we arrived.
She and the Blair greeted each other warmly. She is a beautiful young woman; every detail of her appearance was in place. Blair introduced us, and she greets me in a friendly way, which made me feel comfortable.
"Please sit down," she said pointing to some seats, and we did.
"What brings you here? Well, Blair, let me explain a little, but I want the details so we will know how to proceed," she says in a calm tone.
I looked at my hands and sighed and started narrating everything that has happened within the past two weeks. I drown out the pain and told her about my miscarriage too.
“I'm very sorry.” she said, taking my hands in hers. “We will do everything possible for you to get your job back and to be able to divorce your husband. I must say that very few lawyers have the courage to confront the Andersons. For several years, we in this firm have seen how cases against them are lost, even when they are guilty. However, we will give them war.”
She got up and looked for her organizer and a pen, sat back again and started taking notes.
“I'll give you my card so we can be in touch. Tomorrow I'll go to the hospital and then I'll go see Mr. Anderson, I'll keep you informed of everything that happens.”
"Thank you." We shook hands and she gave me a look of encouragement.
"You're in good hands," she said, and we left her office.
When we walked out of the building, I felt much better, knowing that I have began to do something to get my life back.
We got into the car and decided to go to a restaurant for lunch, I know the fresh air will be good for me. We arrived at a simple restaurant that my friends and I used to go to, when I wasn't Mrs. Anderson. After I got married, I started living a luxurious lifestyle and only went to the best restaurants. But now I know I was just living an empty life.
While we were seating, Blair received a video call from Blake.
“Buona note” Blake said hello. She is in Italy and it was already night there.
“Hello” Blair replied.
"Hello Blake," I said, smiling.
"Noooo, you can't go to our favorite restaurant without me," my friend said sadly, when she recognized where we were.
Blair shrugged her shoulders. “You decided to go to the other side of the ocean, now you're missing out.”
"It's not fair, you have my favorite restaurants and so does Mia," she pouted and then continued. “Mia, come to Italy, forget everything. The most handsome men you've ever seen are here, and do you know that when they speak, your panties drop immediately.” She said funnily, making me to smile, and Blair laughed out loud.
"Perfect, you're not inviting me," Blair complained, placing a hand on her chest, faking a heart break.
"I've invited you in a thousand ways and you always say it's for winter." Blake replied, rolling her eyes.
“What are you saying Mia, are you coming?” I remained silent and pondered over everything I have to resolve.
"I don't know, maybe when I resolve everything here," I replied and she looked disappointed.
"It's okay, I'll be waiting for you here, and you too," she points to her sister. Then she looked at her watch and her eyes widened in disbelief. “I have to go; I'm starting the night shift.”
Blake is also a doctor, she decided to do her residency in Italy as she always dreamed of, and now, she doesn't want to go back.
After the call ended, Blair and I finished lunch and decided to go for a walk around the city. We entered a cloth store, where I choose several clothes, after which I went to the cash register to pay. I gave the attendant my card, but to my surprise when she put it on the machine, nothing happened. The other cards I have are from Jacob so I don't plan to use them and I don't understand why mine didn’t work.
"I'm sorry, miss, your card did not work," the lady behind the counter said.
“I can lend you.” Blair offered, but I don't want to bother her anymore.
“No, that’s not right, I'll go to the bank to resolve this matter.”
I left the store without being able to buy anything. My account is for personal use, how did they get to it? So, if it weren't for Blair, I would be on the street.
We continued walking and a short distance away I saw Jacob's car parked. Instinctively I pulled Blair into the nearest store. From where we stood, I saw Jacob stepped out of the car. Even though he was putting on a face cap and dark glasses I could recognize him.
He opened the passenger door and a young woman with dark hair got out. Blair recovered from her surprise and practically dragged me out of the store. Jacob and the girl held hands and walked towards a coffee shop.
Blair followed the direction of my gaze and hastened to go towards them, but I held her arm so she doesn't confront him. I watched him being gallant with the girl. I thought I couldn't be more disappointed in him, but I was wrong.
“That stupid man, you people haven't even gotten divorced and he's already walking the streets with his lover as if nothing had happened. You should take everything away from him with that divorce.”
"That is not the woman I found him with," I clarified. Blair opened her mouth in shock and hurried out, but held her arm tightly again to avoid a problem.
“No B, I refuse to have anything to do with that family, I just want them as far away from me as possible.”
When I perceived it is safe, we left the store, ignoring the looks of the people who were staring at us with curiosity. We got into the car and drove towards Blair’s house. After several minutes, I noticed a car behind us that followed us into the same street. I sat back on the seat and watched them through the mirror. Then I became nervous when I saw that they were still behind us.
“B, they are following us.”
