Chapter1: Mistake
Maxine's POV
EVERYTHING is like a dream, but I felt my body was aching, as if a huge beast had been on top of me, torturing me and tearing my whole body’s flesh. I was so sore, and I couldn't move my legs.
As I opened my eyes, I was shocked to see a man sleeping beside me. He had long eyelashes and very smooth skin. His nose had a sharp, hawk-like bridge. I was admiring his beauty when I suddenly snapped out of it.
"What am I doing here?" I said, whispering to myself.
My eyes widened in realization that I was completely naked. I knew something was wrong. I sat bolt upright, and my eyes widened as the memories of the previous night flashed before me like a movie.
I had been at a bar with my sister Chelsea. She'd invited me out to celebrate, since I was getting married to my fiancé, Jake, in just a week. She offered me a drink, and that's where it all began. I got drunk and ended up in the wrong room. It was my mistake, but this bastard took advantage of me. And now...
"FVck! I gave myself to a stranger?"
The man sleeping beside me started to stir. I grabbed the blanket to cover my naked body. Then, he looked at me with cold eyes, as if nothing had happened last night.
"Thank you for last night. How much is it?" he asked directly, thinking I was a prostitute.
Tears welled up in my eyes, and I slapped him across the face. He was shocked by my action and couldn't speak, looking directly at me with his wide eyes.
"How dare you take my innocence?!" I shouted angrily. "I was saving myself for my fiancé, but you took advantage of me!" I cried again.
"You were saving yourself for your man, but you still slept in my bed." My eyes widened as he slowly leaned closer, his face inches from mine. "Don't you remember how you moaned seductively last night?" he said with a teasing tone while a smirk curved his lips.
"FVck you!" I screamed, punching him again in the face, causing his nose to bleed.
I quickly stood up and put on the clothes scattered on the floor. I walked straight to the door, and as I was about to leave, I turned back to him.
"No one will know what happened last night. I don't need your money!" I said, then slammed the door shut.
Once outside, I leaned my back against the door, slowly sliding down to the floor. I sat there, hugging myself, and finally let myself cry.
"I'm sorry, Jake! I'm sorry. I didn't mean to," I repeatedly lamented.
I had promised myself that I would give my first night to my fiancé on our honeymoon, but this happened. ‘How could I ever face him?’
I firmly wiped away my tears and took a deep breath.
"As I said, everything is a secret. No one will know about this," I said bravely, deciding to keep everything that happened hidden in my memory.
For how long? No one knows... Maybe someday, he will accept me.
***
After one week...
The choir sang like angels in heaven. The blue sky added to the excitement I felt. The wind felt like it was kissing my cheeks, giving me a heartwarming greeting.
My feet felt light as if I were walking on air; I felt like I was floating, and then, a smile played on my lips as I gazed at the man waiting at the end of the red carpet. He was my savior, my best friend, my everything. He is Jake Watson, and after today, he will be my husband.
I continued to walk while my eyes were fixed on him, but I didn’t know if it was just the heat, and I felt a little dizzy.
I forced myself to take the last step and finally reached the altar where Jake was waiting. He took my arms and checked on me.
"Are you okay? You look so pale." His words were inaudible, but I could read his lips.
"I'm fine. Maybe I just didn't get enough sleep from being so excited," I replied, offering a sweet smile.
But as we faced the person who would marry us, my vision swam again. I couldn't understand the words being said in the ceremony. My throat felt dry, and a moment later, I felt lightheaded.
My knees buckled, and I collapsed against Jake.
"Max! Max!" Jake called out repeatedly.
I tried hard to open my eyes, but I couldn't. A commotion broke out among the people, and I heard my stepmother calling my name, but soon, I completely lost consciousness and couldn't remember anything that happened after that.
***
The room was cold, and I felt a sharp pain in my hands. I tried to move, feeling the softness of the bed beneath me.
'Where am I?' I wondered, struggling to remember.
As the dizziness subsided, I slowly opened my eyes and saw Jake sitting in a chair beside the bed. His face was serious, and he seemed lost in thought.
"J-Jake?" I stammered.
He looked up as his gaze met mine, but his expression remained cold and serious.
"You're finally awake, Maxine," he said, using my full name.
My brow furrowed, and I knew something felt wrong.
"I-Is everything alright?" I asked.
I tried to move, leaning my back against the headboard. Only then did I realize I was in a hospital.
"W-What am I doing here?" I asked again. Then, a moment later, my eyes widened as I remembered the events leading up to this. "The wedding? What happened to the wedding? I-I'm sorry, Jake. I just felt a little unwell, but I could have still—"
"Who's the father of your child?" Jake interrupted, cutting the explanation I was about to say.
"W-What? What are you saying?"
I felt as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over me as Jake glared at me. This was the first time I had seen his eyes like that—full of hatred and violence. It was as if he wanted to kill me.
"Maxine! How dare you?!”
I quickly turned at the sound of my stepmother's voice, but as I did, a slap landed on my face. My eyes started to shed tears as a million questions raced through my mind.
"How dare you deceive Jake Watson? You're a disgrace! Who is it? Tell me! Who got you pregnant?!"
My eyes widened at my stepmother's words.
"I-I'm pregnant?" I asked innocently.
"Stop pretending you don't know anything, Maxine!"
My world crumbled. I never imagined that one mistake would lead to this. The secret I wanted to keep forever was now impossible to hide.
"I'm sorry, but I've decided to call off the wedding," Jake said, standing up.
I quickly grabbed his hand to stop him, trying to beg for his forgiveness.
"Jake, please let me explain!"
Jake's cold eyes pierced my heart like needles. His gaze was full of disgust and judgment.
"Don't touch me with those filthy hands," he said, roughly pulling his hand away.
He left the room, and tears streamed down my face.
"Stop crying, Maxine! Fix this mess you've made. It's not too late; apologize to him. The wedding can't be called off! You know what will happen to us," my stepmother warned, one after another.
After my tears subsided, I wiped them away firmly and looked at my mother again.
"What do I do, Mom? How? How do I regain his trust?" I asked, as tears welled up again.
"Abort it. That's the only way."
I was so shocked at her words. I couldn't believe she would suggest such a thing.
I knew doing that was a sin, and this wasn't just a thing; it was a human, an innocent child.
"B-But, Mom!"
"Make a decision! That child, or the man who will save our family and our company."
I clenched my fists and bit my lower lip. I touched my belly and thought of the angel inside.
But having this child was a mistake, and I knew I needed to make things right.
***
"Are you sure about this, Ms. Dwight?"
I swallowed hard and clenched my fists. A sharp pain pierced my chest at the doctor's question. But then, I sighed and nodded slightly in response.
I could sense the disappointment in the doctor's demeanor, and I knew what I was about to do was against her will. But I would pay any price to get this child out of me.
"Then sign this waiver," she said, her voice full of disappointment and judgment.
I took the piece of paper. My hand trembled as I signed it while tears formed in my eyes.
"T-Thank you," I said to her.
She gave me the documents and asked me to wait. I decided to step outside the clinic, but I never imagined that leaving that clinic would change my life.
I frowned as I saw several men walking like bodyguards, dressed in black suits, heading towards the VIP area.
I shrugged it off, but as I took a step, my body seemed to collide with a wall, and I fell to the ground. The documents slipped from my hands and scattered on the floor.
"What a stupid woman," a cold, low voice said in front of me.
Only then did I realize I had bumped into someone.
"I'm so sorry!" I apologized.
But when I raised my head, my eyes widened at the sight of the man standing before me. He seemed surprised to see my face as well. Only then did I realize that he was the man I was with that night, the father of this child.
"Y-You!" he said, looking at me directly with a frown.
A moment later, his gaze shifted to the scattered documents beside me.
"Abortion papers?" he murmured, having read some of the documents.
