Chapter 2: Find her

1178 Words
Maxine's POV My heart pounded when our eyes met. I knew he had many questions, but I had no time to explain. I quickly gathered the papers scattered on the floor and hurried out of the hospital. I made sure he couldn't follow me until I safely reached home. I went straight to my room, not sure how many times I sighed. 'What if he finds out this child is his? Who is that man anyway? Was he one of the bodyguards?' I questioned myself repeatedly. I quickly shook my head to dispel my fear. 'I don't think he'll pursue this child, besides, maybe he can't even afford to support him,' I muttered to myself. The next day, I went back to the company where Jake worked. I tried to fix things between us, but even if I begged, he still ignored me. I also went to the clinic where I was scheduled for the procedure, but my doctor wasn't there. I don't know what to do, as if everything is getting out of hand. *** "Max, if I were you, I'd just let Jake go. You're just making a fool of yourself chasing after him." I looked up and towards the bedroom door when I heard my sister Chelsea's voice. I paused my hands from typing on my laptop since I was searching for another hospital to conduct the procedure. "What do you mean?" I asked, frowning. "I mean, if I were you, I'd just leave him and let him love someone else." Chelsea's lips curled up, and her eyebrow raised. Soon after, a memory flashed back in my head, and I remembered the day I got drunk. That night, I finally realized that she had drunk me on purpose. "Y-You! Don't tell me you did that on purpose?!" I exclaimed as my eyes widened. "Who knows?" she replied, then bit her lower lip with a smile. I quickly stood up and walked towards Chelsea. My hand flew to her cheek and gave her a swift slap. I couldn't control myself as my anger was about to explode. "Ouch!" she winced in pain. "Why did you do that?!" Only then did I realize that my stepmother was at home. "What's happening here?" my stepmother said angrily upon hearing the argument and rushed into the room. My brow furrowed as Chelsea cried loudly. Acting like a baby who was having a tantrum. "What did you do to my daughter?" my stepmother said. My eyes widened as I felt a hard slap from her hand. I knew from the start that Chelsea was her biological daughter, and she treated me like a dirty rug. But when she found out about my relationship with Jake Watson, her treatment towards me changed. "You! You've already brought shame to this family, and now you're going to hurt my daughter?" my stepmother yelled again. "If it weren't for Jake, I would have kicked you out a long time ago!" She held her daughter's hand and helped her walk away from me. "If you can't fix your problem with Jake, you'd better just leave this house!" I saw Chelsea's smirk secretly, and her sticking out her tongue like a kid. I clenched my fists, suppressing the anger in my heart while looking at them walking out of the room. 'Why did I trust this woman? I thought we'd get along, but I was wrong.' As the bedroom door closed, tears started to fall from my eyes. I returned to the table and sat in front of the mirror, looking at myself. I was six years old when this family found me walking by the side of a bridge, soaking wet in the rain, and not knowing where to go. I have no memories, and I don't even know my name. My stepmother, Suzy, never liked me; he husband was the one who valued me, who is now working in another country. I've known Chelsea since then, and we've never gotten along. As I grew up, I worked in a company, and that's where I met Jake as my boss. When my stepmother found out about my relationship with him, everything changed. My thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of my phone. My eyes widened when I saw my doctor's name, so I immediately answered. "Hello?" "Ms. Maxine, you are scheduled for tomorrow," she said, bringing a smile to my lips. "Okay! I'll be there," I replied and hung up. I placed my hand on my belly. Until now, I can't believe I'm doing this to an innocent child. "I'm sorry, my child. But I have to do this." *** Gray Harrison's POV "Madame is still in a state of coma, young master." I clenched my fist tightly while seeing my grandmother's condition. She's the only relative I have left, and I can't believe I did this to her. I am the reason she's here. All she wanted was a grandchild, but I refused because there was only one woman in my heart. I can't imagine myself with anyone but my beloved Star, the woman who stole my heart, but now she's marrying someone else. "Sir?" My thoughts were interrupted by my assistant Luke. "Do everything to make my grandmother better. I don't know what I'll do if she dies," I instructed them. "Y-Yes, Sir." I knelt beside my grandmother and held her hand. "What can I do to make it up to you?" I spoke. I don't know why, but as I closed my eyes, the face of that woman suddenly came to my mind. The woman I met in the hallway of the hospital. I'm sure she looks familiar. My eyes widened as I remembered the events of that night. 'Is that even possible?' I said to myself. I stood up, put my hands in my pockets, and stared intently into space. "Luke, I want you to do something for me," I said. "Yes, young master." Money runs everything. As one of the most influential billionaires in this country, there's nothing I can't buy, even the most confidential information, I can easily put it in my hands. I had everything, except for her... *** I clenched my hands and crumpled the paper my assistant gave me. I reread the contents several times, but the possibility that I am the biological father of that child still didn't sink in—the child she wants to abort because it was an accidental pregnancy with a man she didn't know. Maxine Dwight is her name. Everything about her was written in the documents, and I knew I had to do something. "Sir, what are you planning to do now?" Luke asked. I leaned back against the headrest of my swivel chair in my office. My grandmother always wanted a grandchild. If I can prove I'm the father of that child, I know she'll be happy. I rested my elbows on the table and intertwined my fingers. "I need you to find that woman. Make sure she doesn't harm the child she's carrying." "Yes, Sir Gray!"
