Till death

It didn’t take long for Damon’s men to appear at the very location of the accident and they began to clean up the mess that had been made. Aziza had been shocked when she saw so many fleets of cars packed right in front of them and men on black suits came running out with guns and all sorts of weapons in their hands. They had looked around suspiciously and started towards them. Defensively, Aziza stood in front of Damon, to shield him from any impending attack but they didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. “Boss…” one of them had said the moment they stopped in front of them and only then did Aziza realise that it was Damon’s men. “Clean the mess up,” he simply ordered with a straight face, hard eyes and a cold demeanour that differentiated him from the way he was earlier and they had gone to work immediately. Within 30 minutes, all bodies had been successfully cleaned up and a medical team had been called to the location. “It’s a good thing, this road is so lonely,” Daciana chipped in, knowing very well the kind of attention it would bring if dead bodies were suddenly seen littered like dirt along the road. So far, she had heard the news and she knew the kind of predicament in which Aziza was into. She also knew that she was wanted and whatever her next move was had to be clean and precise to avoid too much attention on her. That was one of the very ways she could stay secured from the oracle’s eyes and the hurdles that would come her way. Aziza turned her attention to the road, finding meaning in what Daciana said. No vehicle or person had passed by since they came there and she wondered why the road had looked so lonely and why no vehicles had passed by since. “It’s strange, isn't it? why is it so lonely and quiet here?” Daciana spoke up again, airing Aziza’s thoughts. “That must be because of the construction that’s just a little bit ahead,” Damon responded and they both turned to the man. One was more shocked than the other. “There is construction ahead and you still took this route?” Aziza snapped. “We were pushed into this route. They knew that the other roads would be busy and they made sure we were blocked at all corners making it impossible for us to go through a different route,” he explained, somewhat pleased at what he thought to be worrying in her tone. She reined in her anger and took a deep breath, then she crossed her hand over her chest and said nothing more. She had been angry that he had put his life on the line like that. What if she had not come earlier? He would have driven straight to his doom if he didn’t die by the hands of his attackers. Seeing as she had nothing more to say, he still could not help but feel that she was worried about him and that thought made him feel really joyful. “Were you worried about me?” he went closer to her. She screwed up her face and turned to one of the cars. There was no need for them to stay out in the open anymore, so it was better they went home while the paramedics took care of the rest when they arrived. “Are you really not going to say something?” he followed behind her like a lost puppy who could only gain happiness from its owner. “I have been protecting you since way before I became an adult. Am I supposed to watch you die after sacrificing so many years,” she bit back dryly? Her words stung for a moment, and the way she sounded made it look like they were only strangers and had no other kind of relationship between them. But his lips still twitched none the less and he found her reply pleasing. Daciana shook her head when she saw the man follow Aziza like he was lost. She wondered if it was the same man who stood like some kind of god above her, the same person she had seen from a distance whose strong aura and power would bring one to his knees. He was smiling more strangely and talking more than normal. He behaved more like a human and had a striking thing about him. Yet, the way he followed behind her, was that what love could do? But of course, she knew what the mate bond could do to them. She had experienced the power of such love and how it made one look stupid, fortunately for them both, no one rejected the other. But they were acting too much like strangers rather than lovers or destined mates and that made her curious. Aziza opened the car and stood at the door, then she turned to Damon. “Get in,” “Are you coming?” he questioned, somewhat alarmed. “Am I not always?” she returned his question with one of his. Those words cut deep into his heart and a sense of warmth enveloped him. He had found a companion and more, someone to always be there, someone he didn’t have to be tough with as he was always. He got into the car without arguing and waited for her to get in too but he noticed that she was about to shut the door and jerked. “What are you doing?” Her brows knitted into a frown in exhaustion. “Shutting the door,” “Are you not coming with me?” he asked like a clingy child. Her lips turned up at his question and the thought of being close to him warmed her heart. Being apart from him might kill her but she was not willing to let her feelings ride her judgement, “Of course, I would.” “Then get in the car,” he ordered. “I don’t ride with you,” she entered dryly and he frowned. He knew that she was telling the truth and rather than to ride with him, she would rather be at the top of a building where she could watch over things. But she had been torn apart from him earlier and in those minutes that her gaze did not craze his skin, it was hell and torment. The fear, the panic and the pain that reached his heart was undeniably as painful as when he had lost a loved one. Deep down, he was scared, scared of being far from her, scared of what could possibly happen within a few minutes of not seeing her. His feelings were strange, yet they were so familiar, it was confusing that he would feel that way over a girl who he hardly knew but it was also very comfortable. He frowned at his own feelings, but shook his head a little moment later. She had risked her life for his, and she had even lost her abilities, broken her legs and still made him her priority. He didn’t want to think about what he was doing anymore but rather gave in to the overwhelming feeling that was pushing at him. “I know you don’t, but please,” he turned back to her with pleading eyes. She stared at him, still wanting so bad to say no, but while looking at those deep brown eyes that seemed to be sparkling. “Okay,” she could not help but respond. Just as she was about to get into the car, someone grabbed her arm and she turned to Daciana whose lips were in a pout and her eyes were round and pleading too. “Are you leaving me behind?” she questioned. “I didn’t bring you here with me in the first place,” the red-haired replied, finding their baby attitude somewhat annoying. “How can you say that?” She pulled on her hand again so that it could touch most of her bare skin since she was still very much naked with only a torn suit jacket covering a little part of her body. “I helped you, I saved your life, the least you can do is be kind and take me with you,” Daciana continued, ignoring her tough and rude attitude. She liked her none the less and found her very alluring, plus she wanted to watch what she was like with Damon and know a bit about her before she finally loses her memories. She was a friend, someone she valued for giving her freedom and a much better life. But most importantly, she was looking for a way to tell her that Russel might have a hand in what happened to her abilities. “I didn’t ask for your help,” Aziza turned to her and tried to unhook her arms from her hand but Daciana was very persuasive. She held her tightly and kept her lips in a pout. “Don’t be so ungrateful, show some kindness, will you?” Aziza scoffed and stared at the woman who seemed to have suddenly changed before her. “Have you always been this way? I wish I had killed you when I had the chance.” Daciana giggled at her very blunt and wicked comment, but her heart skipped a bit and she cautioned herself inwardly to be careful to not incur Aziza’s wrath. “You met me when I was a child. I was more or less talkative and I was bold too, I just lost myself along the way. And thankfully, I realised that I had been nothing but a shadow of myself, I want to be myself now, my true self,” she reassured with a grateful heart. Aziza rolled her eyes and thought of Sloan at that point. She already had one headache and really didn’t need another. Then again, she recalled that Daciana would have all her memories wiped out soon, so she could just take her annoying attitude for a while, then get rid of her permanently without killing her. Her lips turned up into a smile and she found comfort with that. “Just let her come with us,” Damon who had been watching the both of them could not help but say. He wouldn’t want anyone else in his house but Daciana was someone who had helped Aziza out in such a critical time. He was grateful to her, if the red hair wasn’t and would show kindness to anyone who treated her right. Daciana shrieked and made way to get in the car but Aziza used her hand to block her path. “He said I could come with you,” she retorted. “Get into a different car,” Aziza said. Daciana’s face flushed and she slowly backed up, realising that she was half naked and Damon was already taken. Then she winked at Aziza, finding her very possessive and walked away to a different car. Aziza got in and shook her head at the woman she had unfortunately unleashed, then she shut the door and turned to Damon to find that he was grinning at her. “What is it?” she growled at him and he shook his head. “Nothing,” The car started immediately after and in a convoy, they rode out while the ambulance and cops came in minutes later. The ride was quiet and Damon had said nothing to her all through. She was happy for his silence and took her time to think about all that had happened earlier. She still did not understand how her powers had vanished. First, she found it hard to heal as before and all of a sudden, then the fire trick, followed by her listening abilities till they all left her body and left her empty. Fortunately, she had recovered it all or she might have lost the will to live after losing Damon. That thought made her pale and her heart ached. She slowly turned her eyes to the man sitting beside her, he was injured, dirty but all the more handsome. She might not be able to have him, but watching him like this was enough for her. He just couldn’t die, not for any reason. Damon felt that familiar gaze on his skin and turned his head to the other direction. Surely, her perfect almond eyes were staring deeply at him and his heart soared just at the sight of her. He moved closer to her, taking in the scent of her, the gas, the smoke and the smell of blood that still clogged her skin. He crossed his hand over her head, then down to her shoulders and gently pulled her to him, then made her head to rest on his chest. “What are you doing?” she flinched at the feel of his touch and made to get up but he pressed her back. “Shhhhh…” “You have been taking care of me for a long time, Aziza. In a little way, allow me to care for you too,” he added. These words stuck in her head and pierced through her heart. She found no boldness to move again and simply just rested her head on his chest. She would love that, she would want that, to be held like that in his arms and taken care of by him. But that wish came with a heavy price, a price she could not afford to pay. No matter what, she just had to keep resisting, to keep pushing away the longing, the feelings in her heart till death came. The pain in watching him and longing for him would go with her to her grave, and as long as he was happy, safe and alive, she would gladly make the sacrifice and focus on her own goals. Tears burned the back of her eyes and she sniffed, refusing to be weak. But for the meantime, she could make do with being in his arms like that and simply listening to the beat of his heart. Just like the song she always hummed, she calmed down and the peace that came with the song of his heart gently caressed her heart and her eyelids slowly dropped. Unexpectedly, sleep came.
