CHAPTER 56
MARA’S POV
For a moment, the entire car was filled with silence. Alex sat still, his trembling hands wiping the tears trailing down his cheeks. For the first time since this whole nightmare started, I really looked at him.
His shoulders were tense, his jaws clenched shut and his lips pressed tightly as he tried to keep them from shaking. He was hurriedly wiping off the tears streaming down his cheeks but they only smeared across his face, making them more evident.
One escaped and as I watched it cascade down his cheeks, something inside me cracked. In that moment, all the resentment, anger and hate that I had been holding onto since yesterday loosened. Taking their place was pity and a certain aching in my chest that I couldn't quite place.
I swallowed hard.
