A third 4

POV: Lena Ryan’s “Yes” still hung in the air like a live wire. My heart slammed against my ribs as I looked between the two men who meant the most to me in very different ways. Ethan’s hand tightened on my knee, steadying me. Ryan sat across from us, elbows on his thighs, staring at the floor like he couldn’t believe the word had come out of his own mouth. I swallowed hard, warmth spreading through my belly. This was really happening. The fantasy we’d whispered about on the couch was stepping into our living room, wearing Ryan’s familiar face and looking more nervous than I’d ever seen him. “Okay,” I said softly, breaking the thick silence. “If we’re doing this, we need rules. Real ones. Before anything happens.” Ethan nodded, pulling me closer against his side. “She’s right. We do this smart or we don’t do it at all.” Ryan finally looked up. His jaw was tight, those broad shoulders tense under his shirt. He’d always been the easygoing one—quick with a joke, always there when we needed him. Tonight he looked like a man standing on the edge of a cliff. We moved to the kitchen table with fresh drinks. It felt safer somehow, more businesslike, even if my pulse was racing and my thighs kept pressing together under the table. “First rule,” Ethan started, his voice low and serious. “No jealousy. If anyone feels it—even a little—we stop and talk. Immediately. No burying shit.” I reached across and squeezed Ryan’s hand for a second. His skin was warm, rough from work. “No emotional attachment,” I added. “This is physical. Hot, fun, whatever we need it to be. But our marriage stays first. What we have with Ryan is… separate.” Ryan’s fingers flexed under mine before he pulled back, nodding. “No secrets. From any of us. If something feels off, we say it. Even after.” “And the friendship doesn’t change,” Ethan said firmly, looking straight at Ryan. “You’re still my best friend. We still grab beers, fix s**t around the house, talk s**t about the game. This doesn’t f**k that up. Ever.” Ryan let out a shaky laugh and dragged a hand through his hair. “You two have clearly thought this through.” “We have,” I admitted, my voice softening. “Because we trust you. Completely. But we’re not stupid. This could go wrong so easily.” We went back and forth for nearly an hour, ironing out the details. Condoms every time—no exceptions. No solo meetups. Safe word was “red” for any of us. Check-ins during and after. No sleepovers the first few times. If the kids were home, nothing happened. The list grew, but every rule felt like armor we were putting on together. Ethan and I agreed easily. We’d talked about most of this already. But Ryan… God, Ryan was struggling. I could see it in the way his eyes kept flicking to me—hungry, then guilty, then back again. His leg bounced under the table. When he agreed to each rule, his voice came out rough, like he was forcing the words. I noticed how his gaze lingered on my mouth when I spoke. How his fingers drummed restlessly on his bottle. The way he shifted in his seat, trying to hide the obvious bulge in his jeans. He was fighting himself so hard it made my chest ache with something dangerously close to tenderness. But I pushed that feeling down. Rules were rules. This was physical. Just passion. “You okay?” I asked quietly when Ethan stepped away to grab more ice. Ryan met my eyes. For a second, the mask slipped. Raw want mixed with years of something deeper flashed across his face before he locked it away again. “Yeah. Just… this is a lot, Lena. You have no idea how long I’ve—” He cut himself off, clearing his throat. “Never mind. I’m good. I want this. If you both do.” His nervousness was strangely endearing. It made me bolder. I leaned forward, letting my sweater slip a little more off my shoulder. “We do. I do.” Ethan came back and caught the moment. Instead of tension, his eyes darkened with heat. “Rules set?” We all nodded. The energy in the room shifted instantly. The careful discussion melted into something electric. My skin tingled. I could feel both men watching me now—Ethan with familiar love and new excitement, Ryan with that hidden fire he’d buried for years. Ethan stood first, pulling me up with him. His hands settled on my waist, possessive but inviting. “Then maybe we stop talking.” Ryan rose slowly, towering over both of us. His chest rose and fell faster. He looked at Ethan, then at me, like he was still waiting for someone to say it was all a joke. I stepped closer to him, heart hammering, and reached up to touch his chest. Solid. Warm. Real. “Stay tonight,” I whispered. “We don’t have to rush everything… but we could start.” Ethan moved behind me, his body pressing against my back, lips brushing my ear. “Yeah, man. If you’re ready.” Ryan’s hand came up, hesitant at first, then bolder as his fingers brushed my cheek. His thumb traced my lower lip the way Ethan had the other night. The touch sent heat straight between my legs. “f**k,” he breathed, voice wrecked. “I’m ready.” The three of us stood there in the living room, bodies close, breaths mingling. No more rules to discuss. No more hesitation. My pulse thundered in my ears as Ethan’s hands slid under my sweater and Ryan’s eyes dropped to my mouth again. Ethan kissed the side of my neck, voice rough with promise. “Bedroom. Now.”
