Chapter 7
“Yo…” Aries was astonished when he saw the text message he received from Lacie out of the blue.
“What’s up?” Poseidon asked as he peered over Aries’ shoulder and saw the message from Lacie. “No way!” he said excitedly. “Yo! Fury! You’re one lucky son of a b*tch!” he shouted.
“What?” Fury looked at him in confusion. Poseidon waved him over like a child waving over their parent for something exciting. Fury rolled his eyes and went over. As soon as he was within reach, Aries turned his phone around to show Fury the text from Lacie.
Precious: Hey, babe, if Fury is near you. Could you please let him know that Allie has just received a text from Maxine stating that her sister, Margot, wants to meet Fury at the ‘Earl of Sandwich,’ located in Downtown Summerlin, at 3:00 PM today?
“NO WAY!” Fury shouted and grabbed Aries’ phone, unable to believe what he had just read. “Is she f*cking with me?” Fury questioned.
“No. Look at the attachment,” Aries replied with a smirk. Fury scrolled down and saw the attachment, and it was a picture of Allie’s phone with the original text from Maxine. Fury’s eyes bulged out of their sockets.
“What’s going on?” Warlord asked, feeling a little down that he didn’t get to talk to his mate before she left for the fairy kingdom. But she promised she would come back so they could work things out, even though her job made things difficult.
“His mate wants to meet him!” Poseidon replied on Fury’s behalf.
“What!? Really?” Warlord was happy to hear this. Fury was still reeling from the revelation that Margot was willing to meet with him after weeks of avoiding him.
“I wonder if she changed her mind,” Aries questioned and sent the same question to Lacie.
Precious: That I don’t know, babe.
Aries: Can you ask, Max?”
Precious: I don’t have time. Allie and I need to attend this board meeting. I love you, babe.
“Dammit, Lacie doesn’t have time to ask Maxine why Margot wants to meet all of a sudden,” Aries told the guys.
“It’s going to be 1 o’clock soon, Fury. You might as well get ready and head out,” Poseidon told him.
“What do I wear?” Fury asked. The guys looked at him quizzically. “What?”
“Dude, it’s not a date,” Aries told him.
“Yeah, man. Calm down, and go as your usual self,” Warlord advised.
“Right. It’s not a date. I don’t know why I’m getting ahead of myself. For all I know, she wants to reject me again,” Fury pouted.
“Seriously, dude? Be neutral and casual about it. Don’t have any expectations, good or bad,” Aries guided.
“Right, okay. No expectations,” Fury repeated and nodded his head. Aries closed his eyes and shook his head.
“Why is it so hard for us to find mates?” Warlord asked. He looked at his comrades, and the only one who was remotely having good luck with his mate was Carter, and even then, it wasn’t going as smoothly as Carter would have liked.
“Hey, at least you guys have one,” Poseidon pouted.
“Your time will come, buddy,” Aries said reassuringly.
“Yeah,” Poseidon tightly smiled. That’s when he noticed Fury smelling his armpits. “Dude, what the f*ck are you doing?”
“Making sure I don’t stink,” Fury replied.
“Bro, just go f*cking shower!” Poseidon exclaimed and cringed in disgust.
“Yeah, man, you have time, you neanderthal,” Warlord said in agreement with Poseidon. Aries shook his head again. He often wondered why he still associated himself with the Fab Four. Fury nodded his head and ran to his bathroom upstairs in the townhouse they shared among the three of them.
Fury arrived at Downtown Summerlin with ten minutes to spare and looped around a few times searching for parking. He was fortunate to find a decent spot in the Dillard’s parking garage. The Earl of Sandwich was only about a five-minute walk, if that. He took a few deep breaths before exiting his vehicle and heading to the sandwich shop. His steps felt heavy, and his heart was pounding rapidly.
When he arrived at the sandwich shop, he focused on sensing if Margot was there yet; unfortunately, she wasn’t. Fury was disheartened that she was waiting for him. He sighed and sat on a bench nearby and waited.
It was ten past 3 PM, and Margot was nowhere to be seen. Fury was getting agitated and wondered if Margot and Maxine were playing a cruel prank on him. He waited ten more minutes, but there was still no sign of Margot. Fury and his wolf, Battle, grew increasingly angry. He stood up abruptly and was about to leave when he heard someone call his legal name.
“Odin!” Fury spun around and saw Margot huffing and puffing with her hands on her knees. She took a few more deep breaths and walked up to him. Fury was speechless. Margot was really in front of him. “I’m so sorry. I got caught in construction traffic on the 515, and it took me longer to get here than I anticipated.”
“I … I thought you and Max were playing a cruel joke on me.”
“What?” Margot was shocked to hear this. “God, no. We would never do anything like that. I’m sorry I’m late. I honestly should have just teleported, but with this playing out in the open, I didn’t want to risk exposure,” Margot explained in a whisper.
“I understand. Are you hungry?” Fury asked as he pointed at the sandwich shop.
“I don’t have an appetite, which is weird because I was starving a second ago. And why is my heart beating a million miles?” Margot squinted her eyes in confusion. That’s when she looked at Fury, who swallowed the lump in his throat. “Oh, it’s you.”
“What is it?”
“Can you calm down? I can feel your anxiety as if it’s my own.”
“Sorry. I… uh … um … I’m usually more composed than this, but I guess you make me nervous,” Fury admitted and rubbed the back of his neck. Margot’s eyes immediately darted to his massive bicep, and her eyes widened in surprise. It was then that Margot took a second to really look at Fury. She studied his physique and saw the stark difference between him and Ethan.
Ethan wasn’t small by any means, but if he were to stand next to Fury, he would look like a teenage boy barely hitting puberty. That’s when Margot noticed that Fury was a good foot taller than her.
“Geez, how tall are you?” Margot couldn’t help but ask.
“I’m 6’2,” Fury answered. Margot looked down at the three-inch combat boots she was wearing. Without them, she was only 5’4”.
“Oh, wow, you are taller than I remember,” Margot said.
“Well, to be fair, you didn’t really look at me when you rejected me,” Fury replied.
“Yeah, I guess I didn’t,” Margot responded as she bit her bottom lip. The action instantly made Fury’s heart start beating again. “Okay, why am I feeling your nerves again?” Margot asked.
“You were biting your lip,” Fury replied.
“Huh?” Fury used his thumb to pull her lip away from her teeth. This caught Margot off guard, and her heart started pounding again. At first, she wanted to blame Fury, but then she realized it wasn’t his heartbeat she was feeling. It was her own.
“Um, if you’re hungry, we can get something to eat before we talk. I’m guessing that’s why you wanted to meet?” Fury said. Margot nodded. Fury got a hold of his emotions, so Margot’s ability as an empath didn’t pick up on it. But he made sure she could feel his need for her in his life.
Margot sighed, nodded, and they headed inside. She ordered her favorite sandwich. She hadn’t had the Holiday Turkey in ages because Ethan hated ‘Earl of Sandwich,’ and he never let her go to Downtown Summerlin without him. Fury heard her order and was pleasantly surprised that she chose the same thing he always got.
“What do you want?” Margot asked Fury. He looked at her in confusion. “It’s on me. Since I was late,” she offered with a genuine smile. Fury nodded and took her up on her generous offer.
“Hi, can I get the Holiday Turkey as well?” Fury ordered. Margot was stunned to hear this.
“What size?” the cashier asked.
“The biggest,” Fury said without hesitation. Margot looked at him in horror. Fury noticed her staring at him. “I need the calories,” Fury easily replied. Margot nodded and took his humongous body once more. What she didn’t plan on, however, was that she actually checked him out more than she had planned to, and Fury noticed this, as well.
They got their drinks, and both ended up choosing Diet Pepsi. They were surprised to see that they had the same taste in food and beverages. Margot didn’t know what to make of it. After she got her lid for her drink, she saw that Fury had also gotten jalapeno kettle chips.
“What?” Fury asked when he saw her staring at his chips. That’s also when he saw she was carrying the same bag. He quirked a brow in subtle happiness. “So, not only do you copy my sandwich, but my drink and my chips?” Fury teased.
“What? Um, excuse you, but I could have sworn that I ordered first,” Margot replied.
“Yeah, but I got my chips and drink first,” Fury countered.
“Whatever,” Margot said and went outside to get a table for them. Fury smiled, grabbed some napkins, and went outside to the table as well. They sat in an awkward silence, neither one of them saying anything.
“So…”
“What did you…” They said at the same time. “You first,” Fury said as he gave her the floor.
“No, you can go first,” Margot gestured.
“Ladies first, I insist,” Fury stated. “You’re the one who wanted to meet, right?”
“Right. I guess you’re right,” Margot replied. “Um …” Margot was suddenly speechless. When she left Max’s house, she was dead set on getting Fury to accept the rejection, but now that he was in front of her, in daylight, and was having an actual conversation with him, she wasn’t having trouble coming up with the words.
Fury saw the turmoil in her eyes, and he immediately knew that she wanted to reject him again.
“You’re going to reject me, again, aren’t you?” Fury asked, his face solemn and filled with hurt. When Margot felt his heart breaking, she wanted to hug him and apologize. She didn’t want to hurt him, but she knew it was necessary. She still loved Ethan. At least, that’s what she kept telling herself. She opened her mouth to ask Fury to accept her rejection, but before she could, her phone rang.
Margot sighed in frustration and picked up the call without looking at the caller ID, which was a huge mistake on her part.
“Hello?”
“YOU F*CKING, B*TCH!? WHERE THE F*CK ARE YOU!? IF YOU DON’T COME HOME BY TONIGHT, I WILL TRACK YOU DOWN AND MAKE YOU REGRET EVER DISRESPECTING ME! I’M DONE APOLOGIZING FOR SH*T YOU DID WRONG, MARGOT!”
Fury could hear every word with his werewolf hearing. He and his wolf, Battle, were growing furious at whoever was yelling at Margot. Without thinking, he grabbed the phone from Margot and hung up the call.
“What the hell!?” Margot exclaimed.
“Who the f*ck was that?” Fury asked angrily.
“That’s none of your business!”
“Was that your fiancé? Is that how he actually talks to you?” Fury was utterly dumbfounded.
“You heard that?” Margot asked in disbelief.
“I’m a werewolf, of course, I heard all of it. But even if I weren’t, he wasn’t really speaking softly,” Fury replied and subtly looked over his shoulder behind him. Margot looked over his shoulder as well and saw other patrons staring at her. Her face flushed in complete embarrassment.
