Chapter 6
“Wait, where are you going?” Margot asked her sister.
“Sin, the Gamma female of the Desert Moon pack, called Claudia and me to help vanquish a dark witch,” Max replied as she got dressed.
“Is uh …”
“Yes, Fury will be there. I already asked, Sin,” Max replied before Margot could finish her question.
“Can you—”
“And no, I’m not going to ask him to accept your rejection on your behalf. If you really want him to do that, you need to meet him yourself and ask him to,” Max quickly said. Margot scowled at her. “You know, I really don’t understand you, right now.”
“What?” Margot assumed ignorance.
“You’ve been hiding out at my place for weeks now, and Ethan has been calling you nonstop to ‘apologize,’” Max said with finger quotes. “And if this were any other time, your stupid a*s would go running back to him. But given that you’re still at my house, Allie’s words definitely got to you.”
“No, they didn’t. I’m just showing Ethan that he can’t do what he did and expect me to forgive him right away,” Margot unconvincingly replied.
“Uh-huh,” Max quirked an eyebrow, not believing her.
“Really!” Margot doubled down.
“Are you trying to convince me or yourself?” Max questioned, borrowing a page from Allie’s playbook. Margot shot another glare at Max. "Look, Margot, you’re clearly torn about what to do. But you know the truth about Ethan, and what’s been happening between you and Fury is also affecting you. So, why don’t you do everyone a favor and meet him? Or are you too scared to because you know deep down that the mate bond would influence your decisi--?”
“No, it wouldn’t,” Margot quickly defended before Max could even complete her statement.
“Why are you being so defen—”
“I’m not!”
“You’re not even letting me finish my sentences before you interrupt me. Which is something you’ve been doing since you were a kid, when you’re lying to yourself.” Margot pouted and scowled again. “You can pout and glare at me all you want, kiddo, but until you make a sure-fire decision, you’re heart and your mind will never be on the same page.”
“Okay, smarty-pants! Then what do you want me to do!?”
“You already know what I want you to do. It’s been the same thing for the last five years. But at the end of the day, it’s not about what I want. It’s about what you want. Do you want to remain Ethan’s emotional and now physical punching bag for all eternity while he uses you for his gain, or do you want to take a chance on a fated mate that our goddess considers worthy of you?” Max’s question silenced Margot.
* HONK! HONK! HONK! *
“Look, Claudia is here. I have to go,” Max said as she reached for the doorknob. She paused for a moment and sighed deeply. “Look, sweetie, Miranda would never get involved unless she felt it was absolutely necessary. She intercepted your relationship with Ethan because she knows what you’re worth. I just wish you could see it, too. It’s not just about who you are here,” Max said as she pointed to her own heart. “But also because of the magic you come from. If Ethan is truly using you for your magical genealogy, then who knows what he could potentially be plotting?” Margot started to breathe heavily, allowing Max’s words to sink in. “I love you, Margot. Always remember that I only want the best for you.” Max said those final words and left her house to meet Claudia so they could meet up with Mikey and the bounty hunters of Desert Moon to help them with their dark witch problem.
After Max and Claudia finished what they had to do, they went back home because they didn’t want to deal with the aftermath of a rogue werewolf being torn apart. They told Mikey to call them once they cleaned up so they could identify the dark witch.
Claudia dropped off Max back at her house, but not before Max had told Claudia everything about her sister and the predicament she was in.
“Ew, I knew Ethan was a sleazeball, but I didn’t peg him to be an ab*sive one,” Claudia grumbled.
“That’s not even half of it.”
“Yeah, the whole being mated to a werewolf thing is crazy. But I mean, we all know Miranda would never get involved unless she had a good reason.”
“I told Margot the same thing!”
“Have you told Margot the truth about her powers?” Claudia asked.
“No. And you’re not going to, either!” Max warned Claudia.
“Max, you know as well as I do that once she loses her v*rginity, she’s going to unlock her full powers. And if that ends up being with Ethan, who knows what he might do with that power?”
“That’s why I’m so f*cking scared, Claudia. I also think Ethan is starting to catch on to why our family waits to lose their purity until we’re married. He wouldn’t be pushing her to have s*x if he didn’t suspect,” Max sighed in dread.
“Then you’d better pray to Miranda and every other deity in the world that Margot gets her sh*t together and chooses that bounty hunter and not Ethan.”
“I know. I’m trying to persuade her to meet him again so the mate bond that’s still there can rekindle. Margot, being an empath, will be her saving grace because she’ll be able to sense his feelings for her. They’ll be substantially different from Ethan’s.”
“Good luck,” Claudia said with genuine concern.
“Thanks. I’ll catch you later,” Max replied and said her farewell to Claudia before exiting the car.
Max could see that it was dark inside the house, and she knew that everyone was asleep. She was grateful that Stuart was such a champ and was watching the kids while she dealt with a magical nuisance. She went to Margot’s room first and saw that Margot was sleeping with a light on. Margot had a motherly smile on her face. She knew that this meant Margot had stayed up waiting for her, but ended up falling asleep.
Max used her powers to flick off the lamp, closed the door softly, and went to her room to clean up and go to sleep. When she got into bed, Stuart rolled over and spooned her from behind. Max smiled, grateful for her husband. She fell asleep right away from exhaustion. She said an internal prayer to Miranda and the other deities that Margot would see the truth about Ethan before it was too late.
The next morning, Margot was sitting up in bed when Max came in to get her for breakfast.
“Hey, you’re already up?”
“Yeah, I’ve been up for a while now,” Margot replied, hugged her knees, and was deep in her thoughts.
“How did you sleep?”
“Eh…”
“What’s wrong?” Max asked as she sat at the foot of the bed, looking at her sister worriedly.
“I thought about what you said, and I decided to meet, Fury.”
“REALLY!?” Max said excitedly. Margot furrowed her brows at her sister’s joyous attitude. “Ahem, sorry. I got a little too excited there.”
“Ya, think?”
“Wait, you’re not going to try and convince him to accept the rejection, are you?”
“I honestly don’t know. But I had a really weird dream last night.”
“What kind of dream?”
“That Fury met someone else, and he accepted my rejection because of her, and the feeling was … Um …” Margot couldn’t even explain the hurt she felt in her dream seeing Fury take another woman as a mate instead of her.
“Huh …” was all Max could respond with. But deep down, she was thanking Miranda.
“What?” Margot scrutinized her sister.
“Nothing. I just think that’s an odd dream to be getting worked up about. I mean, why would it bother you if he chose another woman as a mate?” Max asked, attempting to use reverse psychology on Margot.
“It doesn’t.”
“Rightttt… That’s why you’re letting a dream of someone who probably doesn’t exist convince you to meet with the mate that our Wiccan goddess chose for you when you’re so adamantly in love with that a*shole, Ethan,” Max sarcastically said.
“Whatever. Can you call Allie and have her extend a message to Fury to meet me at the ‘Earl of a Sandwich’ at Downtown Summerlin?”
“Sure. What time?”
“Um …” Margot looked at the current time on her phone. “3 PM.”
“Okay. Do you want me to go with you?”
“No. I need to figure this out on my own.” Max nodded and quickly texted Allie. When Allie saw Max’s message, she almost jumped out of her skin. She and Lacie were in California handling some business.
“Holy sh*t!” Allie exclaimed.
“What?” Lacie asked. Allie showed her the message from Max. Lacie’s eyes jumped out of her head. “No way!”
“Can you forward this to Aries and have him tell Fury?” Allie asked Lacie. She nodded and quickly called her husband, Aries, who was currently with Fury and the other bounty hunters.
