Chapter 5
The next morning, Margot woke up with a terrible headache and was confused about why she wasn’t at home. But then she remembered the night before, and all of the horrible memories of her magical duel with Ethan flooded back to her. Margot took a shaky breath, and tears started to fall again. Her sobbing was heard by Maxine, who was sitting on the floor of the room watching her.
“Don’t,” Max sternly said. Margot gasped in fright, and she looked down to see her sister glaring at her.
“What?”
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t cry for that jackass,” Max stated and rose from her feet.
“I need to get home,” Margot quickly said and was about to recite a spell to teleport her back home, but Max reacted swiftly and cast a silencing spell on Margot. “Mmmm!” Margot screeched at her sister.
“You’re going to shut up and listen to me. I’m tired of telling you the same damn thing over and over again, and for you to listen for one day and then go back to that b*stard.”
“Mmm!” Margot retorted.
“No, you’re going to shut it and listen; otherwise, I’m going to take away your voice completely. Do you hear me?” Max scolded her sister. Margot nodded. “Words, Margot.”
“Mmhmm…”
“Good. Now, sit,” Max commanded. Margot sat on the bed. “I don’t care if you don’t want to hear it or believe it, but you need to open your eyes and stop acting stupid. Ethan doesn’t love you. Do you understand? He does not love you. He is using you for your ties to the coven.”
“Mmmm!” Margot retorted, but Max shot her a death glare, causing Margot to shut up instantly.
“Do you remember what happened last night? Hm? How you showed up in the middle of my living room, covered in burns that he caused?" Margot nodded. “And you want to go back to that?” Margot didn’t reply. “Answer me. Do you honestly want to go back to that?” Margot slowly shook her head. “Good, I didn’t think so. So, here’s what you’re going to do. You’re going to call him, with me right there with you, and you’re going to postpone the wedding again.”
“Hmm!?” Margot’s eyes widened.
“If you don’t, I will take drastic measures and have you unbound from the coven.”
“Hm!!”
“Do you seriously think that Ethan will want to be with you if he finds you have no magical leverage to offer him?”
“Mmmm!” Margot started to cry.
“Yes, I’m being tough on you because I won’t let you show up at my house again the way you did last night. What if he ends up killing you next time? Huh?”
“Hmm…Mmm…”
“Yes, he will. He’s cheating on you, Margot. Has been for a while now. Fernando saw him. Thankfully, Ethan didn’t see Fer that day, but Fer was too shocked to take a picture for proof. Everyone who truly loves you is f*cking worried about you. Why can’t you see that?” Max asked. Margot’s face fell as tears welled in her eyes. Margot knew what Ethan was doing to her wasn’t right, but she couldn’t help how she felt about him. It wasn’t as if she could stop loving him at the drop of a hat.
“Mmmm…” Margot nodded her head to indicate she needed to tell Max something.
“Are you going to recite a spell to leave?” Max asked. Margot shook her head. “You promise?” Margot nodded. Max studied Margot to see if she was lying, and when she sensed that Margot was being honest, she released the silencing spell.
“That was foul, Max,” Margot grumbled.
“I don’t care. Tell me what you want to say.” Margot sighed.
“I know I’m being stupid, but I can’t help it. He’s my first love. You don’t just let go of something that important.”
“Yes, you can. Especially when it’s not really love. Why can’t you see that?”
“It’s not that I can’t…”
“Because you refuse to?” Max asked, and Margot truthfully nodded. “Oh, honey, why are you hurting yourself like this?”
“Because all I ever wanted was to become his wife. I can’t see myself with anyone else.”
“But someone more powerful than us can,” Max stated. Margot looked at her sister in surprise, and Max lifted her brows suggestively.
“Miranda?” Max nodded. “Are you talking about Fury, the werewolf? But I rejected him.”
“According to Brandon, Fury hasn’t accepted the rejection.”
“Who’s Brandon?”
“He’s the Beta of Desert Moon you met that night. He’s also my boss at the club. I had to call in because of you, and I ended up telling him about what’s been happening.”
“WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!?” Margot screamed angrily. “My private life is none of their business!”
“It is when your actions are also affecting, Fury,” Max replied.
“What?”
“Margot, have you been feeling odd lately. Ever since you met him?” Max asked, referring to Fury.
“Odd? No, I don’t … Wait—” Margot thought back to all of the chest pains she would experience out of the blue.
“What?”
“Um, I… I don’t know if this is something, but ever since I rejected him, whenever Ethan and I would be loving with each other, I started to feel pain in my chest. Like, if Ethan and I kissed, hugged, and even cuddled. I would feel either a faint or sharp pain in my chest where my—”
“Heart is…?” Max asked. Margot nodded. Max sighed.
“What’s happening to me, Max?”
“It’s not what’s happening to you, sweetie. You’re feeling his pain.”
“Whose?”
“Who do you think?”
“Fury?” Margot questioned, and Max nodded. “But why would I be feeling his pain?”
“Because you’re an empath, sweetie, and he’s your mate.”
“No, he’s not. I rejected him, remember.”
“And I just told you that he didn’t accept it. Which means, your hearts are still bonded to each other, if it’s weak.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I think Allie will be able to explain it better. Are you willing to meet and talk with her?” Margot sighed, thought deeply, but eventually nodded. “Oh, and uh, fair warning, she’s a good person, but she can be very blunt.” Margot furrowed her brows in confusion. “You’ll see.” Max texted Allie and let her know she would be reciting a spell to teleport her to Max’s house. Allie replied with a thumbs-up emoji. She told Dorian where she was going and gave Max the go-ahead to teleport her. About a minute later, Allie arrived in Margot’s room in a flurry of bright lights.
“Yo, that was pretty cool,” Allie said cheerfully. Allie hugged Max lovingly. She turned around to see Margot for the first time. “Hi! I’m Allie, Luna of the Desert Moon pack. You must be Margot,” Allie greeted and extended her hand. Margot shook her hand.
“That she is,” Max replied for Margot. “Allie, this is my little sister and fellow light witch, Margot Combs.” Allie raised an eyebrow at Max. “Different dads, remember?”
“Right, I forgot. Thank you for the reminder. So, why am I here?” Allie asked.
“I need you to explain to my sister why she’s feeling pain in her chest whenever she’s remotely intimate with her a*shole of a fiancé.”
“Oh. Yeah, sure. Um, so, pretty much how it works is that since Fury didn’t accept your rejection that night, your bond with him is somewhat intact.”
“Yeah, my sister already told me that.”
“Well, what I’m assuming she didn’t tell you was that when either person cheats on their mate, the other party will feel what’s called ‘The Pain of Infidelity.’”
“What?” Margot asked in confusion.
“Yeah.”
“What is that?”
“It’s exactly what it sounds like.”
“And that’s normal for your kind?”
“It is. Even something as small as a kiss can cause it,” Allie continued to explain.
“But I’m not a werewolf, why would I be feeling those pains?” Margot asked.
“Because you’re an empath, honey. Remember?” Max reminded Margot.
“What does that... Oh...” Margot paused and thought for a moment. “Are you saying that I’m feeling his pain?” Margot asked to ensure she understood. Allie and Max nodded in confirmation.
“And it’s not just because you’re an empath, Margot. As I said, you’re still tied to him since he never accepted the rejection.”
“Can’t you make him? I mean, you are his Luna, right?”
“That’s not how it works, Margot,” Allie replied.
“What do you mean?”
“I can’t make him do anything regarding his bond with you. That’s solely up to him,” Allie answered.
“What?” Margot was stunned. “So, are you telling me that anytime I do anything with my fiancé, Fury is going to feel it, and then I’ll feel it, too?” Margot asked. Allie nodded. “How is that fair to me!?” Margot yelled in disbelief. “So, what? He’s punishing me!?”
“I don’t think he knows that’s happening to you, Margot,” Max responded.
“He doesn’t,” Allie confirmed.
“Why can’t you make him accept my rejection?” Margot begged Allie.
“Because then that takes away his free will. And it’s against the law for werewolf packs. I’m sure the same thing goes for covens,” Allie replied. Margot sighed, unsure how to process the information. “Margot, did your sister tell you that I have powers, too?” Allie asked her. Margot shook her head. “Well, I do. And one of my powers is being able to sense mates for people I’m close to. Even though I’m not close to you, I’ve gotten to know Fury over the last few weeks, and I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt, you and Fury belong together.”
“But I’m engaged.”
“So? That doesn’t matter.”
“What do you mean it doesn’t matter!?”
“Because I don’t sense anyone else’s soul tied to yours. If you were truly meant to be with this fiancé of yours, then I would feel it—even just a little bit. But when you mentioned him just now, I felt nothing from your essence: no love, no acceptance, nothing. Well, that’s not completely true. I did feel something.” Margot furrowed her brows in confusion. “I felt dread, pain, and fear.”
“What?”
“But when we mentioned Fury just now, even when you said his name a few seconds ago, do you want to know what I felt?” Margot responded, but Allie knew she wanted to know. “I felt hope. Your essence is automatically responding to Fury’s name, which tells me that your soul longs for his. That’s why your Wiccan Goddess of Light paired you together.”
“But I love my fiancé.”
“Really? Because I don’t feel it. Are you trying to convince us or yourself?”
“Are you always a self-righteous condescending b*tch?” Margot asked.
“Margot!” Max shouted at her sister for being disrespectful.
“No, Max, it’s fine. She has a right to ask that. And the answer is, only when I need to be. Let me be frank, I’m not your friend, Margot. I’m your sister’s friend. Which means, I don’t necessarily have to be nice to you. Because from what I’ve gathered thus far, being nice to you isn’t going to help you get your head out of your a*s.” Margot scoffed at Allie’s bluntness. She then looked at Max for support, but all Max did was shake her head, hold up her hands, and give Margot the look that said, ‘you need to hear this.’ Margot huffed in disbelief again as her jaw hit the floor.
“Thank you, Allie. I think my sister gets it,” Max said.
“You’re welcome, love. We’ll talk again soon.” Max nodded and sent Allie home. Margot continued to stare at her sister in utter disbelief that she would allow her friend to speak to her that way.
