Chapter 3 “What? I don’t understand, Max, why would our goddess pair me with a werewolf, knowing full well that I’m about to get married?” Margot asked in utter disbelief at the news she had just heard from her sister. “I don’t know, but Allie told me that their Moon Goddess had nothing to do with it. She had no idea Miranda even did it until after you rejected Fury,” Max replied. Margot was speechless. She didn’t know how to react. “Max, what am I supposed to do?” “What do you mean? You rejected him. There’s nothing left to do unless you’re already having second thoughts about Ethan,” Max replied as she lifted an eyebrow at Margot. “What?! N—N—No! Why would you even say that?” Margot stuttered. “Right. Then why are you being so defensive?” “You just insinuated I don’t want to marry Ethan.” “Ethan, huh?” “What?” “Funny, you always called him ‘the love of your life,’” Max said antagonistically. Margot’s eyes widened when she realized what Max was getting at. “Max, can you stop!” Margot immediately hollered. “Okay, okay, calm down. Don’t get your panties all up in a wad,” Max said as she raised her hands in withdrawal. But deep down, Maxine knew her sister better than she knew herself. Margot was indeed having second thoughts about Ethan. Maxine didn’t want to jump the gun, but she could already feel that Margot would be postponing the wedding just by her facial expression when she showed the slightest bit of hesitation. Maxine would keep her approaches to herself until Margot realized what everyone else in their lives already knew. Ethan was no good, and he would only end up hurting Margot in the long run. After visiting Maxine, Margot returned home later that day, only to see that Ethan was already home from work. Margot panicked because she was hoping to make it home before him. Ethan hated it whenever Margot wasn’t home to greet him. She rushed inside, preparing to apologize profusely, but as soon as she opened the door, she was met with a cup flying toward her face. “AH!” Margot quickly used her powers to freeze the object mid-air. “Where the hell have you been!?” Ethen thundered from the couch. “I was at Max’s. I told you I was going to hang out with her today,” Margot replied, grabbing the cup that was frozen mid-air and sighing in utter disbelief that Ethan threw it in the first place. “I told you to be home early!” “It is early!” Margot responded as she looked at the clock on the wall. “Did you just raise your voice to me?” Ethan questioned with an intimidating tone. “Are you serious, right now? You threw a cup at me for no reason!” Ethan blinked and popped up right in front of Margot, and pushed her into the door. “Ethan!?” Margot exclaimed. He grabbed her by the chin roughly and got uncomfortably close to her face. “You better think long and hard about what you say next if you still want to get married next week, Margot.” “Ethan, why are you being like this?” Margot questioned, tears welling up in her eyes. “Because you seem to have forgotten who you answer to. Unless you want me to cancel the wedding indefinitely, you better get your sh*t together and act right. Is that in any way unclear?” Ethan gritted. Margot shook her head. “Good.” Ethen released her chin and then slammed his lips to hers in a destructive kiss. As soon as he did, however, Margot felt pain in her chest that wasn’t her own. She pushed Ethan off of her and grabbed her heart. “Did you just—” Ethan was about to question angrily, until he saw Margot holding her chest and grunting in pain. “What’s wrong with you?” He asked. “I don’t know. I feel like my heart is starting to break,” Margot whimpered. But no sooner than she answered his question, the pain was gone. “What?” Margot asked herself more to herself, but loud enough for Ethan to hear. “What the hell was that?” Ethan asked. “I don’t know,” Margot answered truthfully. “Get your f*cking sh*t together, Margot. Or there will be hell to pay,” Ethan warned, and then blinked. He was gone in an instant without a word as to where he was going. When she felt that he was no longer in the house, Margot fell to the floor and started to sob. Ethan always had a temper, but lately, she had begun to notice that he was becoming increasingly aggressive. Margot didn’t want to test Ethan’s anger any further, so she was on her best behavior. She always let him know where she would be, was home by a specific time, and if she had to work, she made sure to keep him apprised of when she went on break, when she clocked back in, and when she clocked out to go home. She continued to work on the final preparations for the wedding, but when she went to make the final payment for the venue before heading to work, the venue director informed her that her spot had been lost because she was late with the last payment. “But you said I until today to make the final payment!” Margot exclaimed with trepidation and disbelief. “I’m sorry, Ms. Combs, but your final payment was due yesterday,” the director of the venue replied. “What?” Margot gasped and looked at her calendar. And sure enough, Margot got her days mixed up. “No, no, no, no, this can’t be happening. My wedding is supposed to be in two days!” “Ms. Combs, there’s nothing I can do about that.” “There has to be something!” “I’m sorry, but the reservation date was given to someone else who paid in full.” “No! What am I supposed to do? I’ve already sent out the wedding invitations!” “I feel for you, I truly do. The only thing I can offer you is another date.” “And when would that be?” “Nine weeks from now,” the director replied as she looked at her calendar. “NINE WEEKS!?” Margot exclaimed dubiously. “You don’t have anything sooner than that?” “I’m sorry, I don’t. You can take it or leave it. I can take your payment today and apply it to the new date, but if you don’t make a decision right now, I will have to give this date to another couple that is currently waiting for an answer.” “Fine, I’ll take it,” Margot quickly answered and gave the final payment to the director. “Very good.” The director put Margot’s information into the new date and signed the contract with her that same day. When Margot left the venue, she called Ethan, but he didn’t answer. She was going to leave him a voicemail, but his mailbox was full. “Seriously? You still haven’t cleaned out your mailbox?” Margot questioned in annoyance. She ended up sending him a text message explaining what happened. She had hoped that Ethan would be understanding, but he ended up berating her for being incompetent and for making an error in the final payment. He told her that it was all her fault for not doing a better job of taking care of everything, and that the wedding being postponed for a month and a half was her fault, not anyone else’s. Margot was already feeling bad about missing the payment date, but Ethan's criticism of her and calling her stupid made her feel that much worse. Margot started to cry in her car, wondering why, ever since she had her run-in with Fury, everything in her life was beginning to go awry. She ended up calling her sister, but Maxine didn’t pick up. Margot looked at the time and realized that Max would be working and wouldn’t be able to answer her call. So, she called Letty instead and explained everything that happened. “I think you should take this time to really think about if you want to marry Ethan, girl,” Letty told her. “Of course, I do. Why else would I be so upset about the delay?” Margot questioned. “Is that the only reason why you’re upset? Or are you upset because you’re finally seeing what a d*ck Ethan is?” “Letty, I didn’t call you so you could criticize him. I called you because I need to vent to my best friend. I feel like the entire world is against me right now,” Margot complained. “That’s because it is. The world is quite literally screaming at you, but you refuse to listen.” “Forget it. You don’t understand,” Margot grunted and hung up the call without even saying goodbye. Letty looked down at her phone, shook her head, and rolled her eyes. “Was that Margot again?” Letty’s boyfriend asked. “Yup.” “Is she still hellbent on marrying that tool?” “Yup.” “She does know he’s cheating on her, right?” “Nope.” “Are you going to tell her?” “Nope.” “Babe, she has the right to know.” “She does. But she’s not in her right mind, and she won’t listen to a word I say if I even mention Ethan being unfaithful. Not after they’ve been together for five years. And if I go to her with that information without solid proof, she’s going to turn me into a toad. Literally.” “Okay. So, what’s wrong now?” Letty’s boyfriend asked and leaned in to get the scoop. Letty looked at him and furrowed her brows. “What?” “You like gossip more than women do, I swear.” “So?” Letty chuckled and filled him in on everything that happened with Margot, Ethan, and the venue. “Damn, if that ain’t the universe telling her to break things off, then I don’t know what is.” “That’s what I told her, but she won’t listen,” Letty replied. Her boyfriend, who was also a wizard within the same coven, shook his head.
