I thought I had died. It was the only explanation for this pain, for this emptiness, for the darkness that came for me. Everything was dark. Everything felt so far away. And although I am unconscious with death hunting for me, I still hear things and see blurs and flashes of things. Through the haze and the fear of what's next, I hear her. I see her. In all of it. Her hunched over me. Dark and blurry and slightly obscured but still so obviously her. It took me a moment to realize I hadn’t died, that this wasn't a dream. It took me a moment to realize that this, that she, was real. All real. Her hair so wild, her eyes so bright. Her panicked voice of reassurance, the heat of her hands on me. Her taking care of me. Her nursing my wounds and calling for me. Her carrying me
