It felt like my body was on fire. That was the only way that I could explain what I was feeling, that that was the sense of panic that I was feeling as I ran right back home to where my mother and the girls still were. It didn’t make sense that Alexander had known that my mother and the girls were alone.  My mother was supposed to have kept them with her in the basement where no one would know that they were there unless they had gone ahead and left the basement, which they had been under strict orders not to.  I knew that if they had indeed done it, if they had indeed gone ahead and left the basement, then it must have been for a good reason.
