(Elias) I waited outside Avery’s bathroom door, listening to the water running. My hands would not stay still. I ran them through my hair and looked at the door again. She had been in there too long. “Avery?” I called. “You okay?” No answer. The water was still running. I opened the door and saw her standing under the shower, still in her dress, eyes half open. “Hey,” I said, stepping closer. “You’ll get sick like that.” She looked at me, quiet but awake. Her skin looked pale, but her eyes were clearer than before. I turned off the water and handed her a towel. “I need to help you get dry, alright?” I said. “I won’t look.” She nodded.
