My worry was tremendous when I left the room. I was worried her bigot of an ex had come back. Thankfully, my guard sent me a text letting me know it was her father which calmed my nerves to a point. I talked with the director and asked for the nurse to be replaced with another and her to be allowed to go home with a paid shift off. I wasn't sure why they didn't do that in the first place, but it isn't my top concern right now. A new nurse was giving the little princess her exam and kept making faces of despair. What could be wrong?
"What's wrong with her?" I asked as soon as the nurse stepped out of the nursery with the little princess, making her jump slightly.
"I am sorry I can only disclose that information to her guardian." The woman composed herself as we headed back to the room. As we got to the door, there were two new guards I had never seen before.
"Miss is showering right now, please come back after." The guard spoke in a monotone voice, making the nurse look at me in confusion. I took the little princess from her arms and cradled her against my chest.
"Please come back in an hour to inform her of the test results." The nurse nodded, as she grimaced with annoyance before walking off. She obviously wasn't happy with being pushed to the side like that.
As I walked into the room, the most angelic sound filtered towards me, my feet stopping on their own accord outside the bathroom door, as the little princess cooed along with the harmony.
"How can't you find meeee, in the dark-est coooorner
Waiting for yoooouuu- oouuu
Hear my pleas, Feel my sorrow
The need inside mee grrooowws
See my pain, sense my despair.
My body craaaves your loooovvveee"
Without realizing, my body slowly gravitated towards the door, accidentally bumping it with my shoulder. I caught my footing before falling into the bathroom. The beautiful melody seized to exist as the silence lingered on.
"Whose is there?" She asked, a slight panic making her voice rise. The little princess chose that time to cry, as if losing the surrounding melody caused her to become upset. I knew the feeling. Sapphire's voice was a gift from heaven itself.
"Hello Sapphire, we just returned from the testing. The nurse will be back soon to tell you the results. I will just get the little princess changed and fed while we wait for you to finish up." I spoke out directly, acting like nothing had happened.
"You stayed?" Sapphire spoke with shock lacing her words. She didn't seem used to many people staying in her life. She would be one hard shell to crack.
"Of course, don't rush." I said simply, not making a big deal out of this. If my family saw me now, they would be saying I was already wrapped around both these girls' fingers. Not sure if they would think I was moving too fast or happy that it seemed I didn't want to be alone anymore. My mother had only been trying to hook me up with women for the last 10 years. Now I know why I never wanted to, because the girl I was waiting for was nowhere in my line of fate yet.
Patience is key, one saying my mother hates me repeating. Now I understand how she felt.
After getting the little princess situated, Sapphire stepped out of the bathroom. Her hair was wrapped in a black wrap, she had a gray cop top on with black silk leggings. I couldn't help but scan her body, taking in medical wrap around her toned torso, the few drops of water she missed sliding down her perfectly tanned skin. I felt my throat dry as I finally noticed every perfect curve that made her perfect. She had little back dimples I would never be able to forget. Before I could lose myself completely, I heard her clear her throat.
My eyes snapped up at her face, petrified from all the bruising littered across her perfect features. Some old, others new. How much had my girl suffered? Snap out of it, man, there you go again, labeling a battered, newly single woman as yours. We live on opposite sides of the world and I can't stop thinking about making her take my last name. If she only knew the thoughts going through my mind right now. She would probably label me crazy.
"I am done with my shower, how did her newborn screening go?" She asked softly, obviously trying not to wake the little princess. She sauntered toward me, her hips swaying in a rhythm of her own. She dipped down slightly as she scooped the little princess from my arms. "My sweet little dove. You are just the most precious little baby I have ever seen. Let's get you swaddled in your bassinet."
She snapped her fingers. Seconds later the doors opened softly, as a man pushed in a cart of baby diapers, newborn girl's clothes, swaddles, high-quality formula, wipes, and so much more. It was like they were creating an entire nursery in this room. Another man followed with a high-quality bassinet that had sensors built within that monitored the baby's heartbeat, oxygen levels, breathing patterns and temperature.
"She wouldn't tell me, something about only guardians were allowed that information," I answered her question as I observed the equipment being hooked up and placed safely around the room. The little princess was swaddled into a purple and white checkered wrap without being awoken. She was the calmest newborn I had ever witnessed.
"Hmm..... Thank you, Ian, could you bring the nurse in with the screening results." Sapphire spoke softly after humming a response to my answer. She slowly placed the little princess in her new bassinet, all the lights ticking to life as it displayed the vitals. The men left the room with only a nod in response. Who was she, and where did she get these men from? Did her father bring them? Was she serious when she asked for bodyguards?
"Have you chosen a name for the little princess?" I inquired, curious if she had given it any thought. I could honestly say I had, and she wasn't even my child or sister. Sapphire whipped around, her crystal eyes staring into my soul as if she had forgotten I was there. My heart sunk for reasons I couldn't comprehend. Did she not feel the pull I felt? Did she not feel drawn to me like I did her?
Before she could answer or even snap out her shock, the nurse entered, pulling both of our attention towards the door. The nurse looked around, glimpsing towards the baby with a slacked jaw and then back to Sapphire, completely bypassing me. If only she had known who I was. "Ma'am, the results for the newborn are severe. Would you like to talk about this in private?"
How severe could it be? The little princess was breathing well, had a normal body temperature and seemed to be alert. "No, you may speak freely in front of both of us."
Sapphire's words shocked me to the core. Maybe she had felt what I was experiencing. It was as if we were meant for one another, as if our souls were trying to pull us together and the comfort I had around her was something I would cherish till the end of all time.
"I'm sorry to inform you, but it seems the newborn was addicted to a few drugs and went through detox after birth. We won't know the permanent results of the drug use until she starts to develop. Also, she failed her hearing test and seems to have a missing chromosome. She will need further testing and constant medical care for the next few weeks. It is noted in her chart that you will be taking her for a plane ride on Sunday. I wouldn't recommend that. I will unfortunately have to contact the social worker as well. Would you be willing to submit to a drug test?" The nurse spoke arrogantly, as if the baby's well-being wasn't her top concern. It was almost like she had a grudge against Sapphire herself.
