Marius’ description did not give me any real idea of what to expect from our evening. It wasn’t going to be a tragedy, or something crude, but that was all I knew. I tried not to approach it as I would have done in the past, but it was difficult not to plaster a fake smile across my face whenever anybody greeted us on our way to the seats. The theater was similar to the Arena, but much smaller; there were probably a thousand other people in the seats around us, and yet it seemed almost intimate compared to the roar of the crowds watching the gladiators fighting.
