I was a little surprised by how disappointed Jax was. We had never really been friends before all of this - I knew his name, and I knew that his father was a Chieftain like mine was, but we had not spent time together socially or sought each other out… and yet he was talking now as if we had always been close. “I will continue to pay if that is the issue.” I furrowed my brow in annoyance. “That is not the issue. I am allowed to have friends; I just don’t think it would look good if you were one of them.” My words came out sounding more vicious than I intended them to, but it was the truth. Jax knew that I was a courtesan, and he could have contacted me sooner if he wanted to. He had found me and called for me immediately, now that is what he wanted; he had chosen not to do that before
