Chapter Ten: You Like Me.
Days seem so smooth after the welcoming party happened. The atmosphere inside the office was good because Mr. Davids started to interact with us. He joined us every lunch and laugh at some jokes. Sometimes he looks emotionless again but it’s fine as long as he smiles and laughs with us.
“I don’t know sir! I just fixed his tire before the accident, I really did nothing!” The forty-year-old mechanic defends himself when we find out that the fingerprint we found was from him.
“We are not yet suspecting you, we are just asking. You look more suspicious,” Mr. Davids said.
From the glass between the room where Mr. Davids and the mechanic we are watching. We can see them but they can’t see us from here. We have just invited the mechanic and now he was defending himself.
“Of course! You are all suspecting me, that’s the reason why you invited me here right? The car exploded and yet my fingerprints were there even after? How did that happen?!” he was hysterical. So the police inside the room too was readying himself to the possibility of what will happen.
“Sir, we just want to ask some things, stay calm.”
The mechanic inhaled, “Alright, ask me anything.”
“Do you find anything suspicious in Toledo's car while you were fixing his car?”
A moment of silence, the mechanic didn’t reply.
“You do?” Mr. Davids asked again.
“I. . . It's just. . .”
“Come on, tell me what you know.”
The mechanic hides his face with his palm. He looks frustrated. I look at Mitchell who was beside me and he looked at me too. We both know what is happening, there’s something wrong.
“I just got scared! Okay, alright, I saw something there, f**k!” he exclaimed.
“Tell me what you saw,” his tone becomes more serious.
“When I’m starting to fix the car, I saw a time bomb there. It was just an hour before it will explode. I was shocked and wanted to tell it Mr. Tolledo but before I got out under the car, someone pointed a g*n on my side. I didn’t see his face but I’m sure it was a man.”
“And then?”
“He said, don’t do anything with the bomb, just leave it there or else he’ll shut me from my side,” he reasoned. “If you were in the same situation, you probably get scared of it too!”
“Do you see anything that we can figure out the identity of that person, like a tattoo?”
The mechanic stops and thinks, after a while he replied. “He has a scar on his pulse, it was a circular shaped.”
That ended the interview with the mechanic. We all think that it was just a simple case but we think it wasn’t.
There’s a person behind this crime but we didn’t know who it is because his girlfriend doesn’t know any person that will be possible of killing his boyfriend.
“This is harder than I thought.” Mr. Davids said while we were walking back to our office.
“I told you not to dig with it, don’t tell me I didn’t warn you,” Jojo replied.
“It’s okay, as long as I know that what I am doing is right.”
I laughed because Jojo pursed his lips after Mr. Davids said that. Even though they stopped arguing about that case between them, Jojo always talks about closing the case because it he said, it was just a waste of energy and time.
After work, Jojo was the first one who gets out of the office. He said his child has no one to look for that’s why he needs to get off earlier. Mitchell gets off as well.
“Can we have dinner together?” I was shocked when Mr. Davids asked me.
I chuckled, “Are you inviting me for a date?”
He smiled and my eyes widened at what he responded, “Why not? Let’s date.”
I stopped at what I am doing and looked at him seriously because seriously, a date? Really?
“Of course it was just a friendly date, don’t think about anything else. I just want to eat with someone.”
My mouth opened but I closed it right away and nodded at what he said. Well, I haven’t had someone to eat with too, might as well take his invite.
“Alright, let’s eat!”
We decided to eat in a not so expensive restaurant because really, we are not rich to eat in a prestigious restaurant. We will just eat for dinner.
“What do you want? Since I invited you, I’m on it,” he offered.
My face turned red. If it was just Mitchell or Jojo, I would be super excited to hear that it was free but I don’t know why I felt like my face heated up.
“No! If you treat me tonight I would definitely think that you are hitting on me. So we have to share the bill!” I disagreed.
He laughed, “Okay.”
I ordered spaghetti meatballs and an iced tea while he ordered a heavy meal, buttered shrimp and rice.
“Don’t look at me like that, I’m not on a diet,” he said.
“I didn’t say anything!” I depend on myself.
“But your eyes did, Mara.”
I pouted, why does he keep on calling me Mara if everyone calls me with my second name which is Antonette. Now I wonder why.
“Why do you still looking at me like that, start eating your spaghetti!” I know he felt conscious!
“Why are you calling me Mara instead of Antonette?” I asked.
He shrugged and started to get his attention on his plate. “I just want to be different from them.”
I didn’t answer right away. I just stared at him for a while, he looked up at me and his brows arched.
“Why? Do you still have any questions?" he asked while chewing the food in his mouth.
“You know what Mr. Davids, I am starting to think,” I said, “that you like me.”
