“The Duchess and I are going to call it a night. We are in our honeymoon,” Shane declared before whisking his blushing wife off her feet and out of the hall.
Lola buried her face on his chest and avoided looking at all the people around them.
“Did you have to say the honeymoon part?” she asked when they reached the elevators that will take them to their chambers.
“Like I said, I have no shame in loving my wife,” he says charmingly. “Besides, all those men are looking at you like you are candy,” he added while Lola rolled her eyes at that.
“Are you a jealous type, Duke Shane?” she teased.
“My wife is gorgeous and every man’s dream. I can’t not be.”
“I will never cheat on you. Ever,” she swore, unable to help the need to reassure him. Finding out that Sofia left him for a prince raised protective feelings inside her.
“Does that mean you will be mine till death do us apart?” he asked as they got into their chambers and locked the door behind them.
Lola opened and closed her mouth. Their contract was for two years, but Shane had been indirectly making her contradict their agreement.
Shane flashed her a smile when she did not respond. There was nothing he would love more than knowing that she was his forever, but he now knew better. He knew that she was terrified of him hurting her.
He held her hand and led her to the bathroom.
“It’s been a long day. Take a shower with me, Wife.”
Against the shower wall, water dripped down their entangled bodies as the uncontrollable desires took over.
“Look at me, Wife,” Shane urged when their racing hearts started slowing down.
“I love you. I will die first before hurting you.”
Lola gazed at his eyes and found no deception in them. She thought Shane loving her was what she wanted. She discovered at that moment that was actually her nightmare. Her heart fluttered and breathing quickened. She suddenly felt like walls were closing in on her.
“Lola?” he questioned when she pushed him off and backed away from him.
“Okay, just breathe,” he urged when he noticed her terrified expression.
“Babe, please talk to me,” he pleaded when she wrapped a towel around her body.
“I don’t want you to. I just…” she hesitated, not knowing how to explain herself.
“It’s been a long tiring day. How about you get some rest and we can discuss this in the morning,” he suggested. Lola nodded, grateful that he was not insisting on talking. She needed to wrap her head around a lot of things that happened that day.
She, however, realised that she could not sleep at all. She just could not rest knowing that she might have hurt him. Shane did not only saved her, but led her to her rightful place, yet she could not even give him assurance that she would be with him till death. She could not even reciprocate his love declaration.
“Shane,” she called to him. Even though his eyes were closed, she did not think he was sleeping.
“Mmmh?”
“I am sorry.”
He sat up and looked at her. “For what?”
“I am scared,” she confessed. Maybe if he understood her reasons, he would be less hurt.
“I know. You have no reason to be sorry. I understand. You were hurt. It makes complete sense that you would want to guard your heart.”
His response got Lola feeling worse, but she still could not get herself to give him the assurance he yearned for.
The following morning, Lola was still fast asleep when Shane left their chambers. He met his mother the moment he got off the elevators.
Melisa could not sleep well the night before. She needed to speak to her son.
“You better treat that woman well, or I will squeeze the life out of you,” she warned the moment their eyes met.
Shane chuckled before embracing her.
“Good morning to you too, Mother. I am clearly no longer the apple of your eye, Mother.”
“I am serious, Shane. Mess around with Sofia or any other woman, and you are dead.”
Melisa knew just how popular his son was in Harpoon and worried about him losing his wife over nothing.
“I don’t plan to, Mother. You have my word.”
“She’s been betrayed badly, Shane,” Melisa reminded him. She had only known Lola for a few days, but really fond of her. She hated Mike for what he did, and finding out how her family was murdered made things worse.
“I know, Mother. You have my word, okay?” Shane reassured, his mother’s reaction was an indication of how much difficult it would be for Lola to let him in, when his own mother needed so much assurance.
“Before I forget, Mandy has suggested a royal wedding.”
Shane frantically shook his head.
“A Foster clan wedding is big enough, I don’t want to freak out my wife.”
“You two are now heads of the Foster kingdom, not just the clan. You are a Duke and she is a Duchess of Harpoon, not to mention the Mokay,” Melisa pointed out.
“Do we have a say in this?”
Shane could tell that his mother and the Queen had already decided on this. If the past was anything to go by, there was nothing he could say that would change their minds.
She flashed him a victorious smile.
“No.”
“I thought so.”
Shane had just finished talking with his mother, when Sir Mike nervously approached him.
“Duke of Harpoon,” he greeted with his head bowed.
“Shane will do. You are here to plead for your son.”
Sir Mike nodded and walked beside Shane when he headed outside.
“He is forgiven, but let him know that this is the last grace I am extending to him. He keeps his filthy hands off my wife or I will wipe him off the Foster history books. He is also fired as the senior manager of Foster enterprises.”
“Thank you,Shane. You are too kind.”
“Oh, I never want to see that fiancee of his in the castle until she has studied and completed the course on Foster laws,” Shane added, and Sir Mike could not agree more. He had lost a lot of money in just the one day Samantha was in the castle.
“Certainly, my Lord.”
Sir Mike hurried back inside to tell his distraught wife the good news. Shane was a thousand better than his other brothers. They would have definitely killed his son. He would have told his son to end things with Samantha had she not been pregnant.
Shane was also heading back inside when a bullet went through his chest…
