Lola could not think straight as Shane ushered her outside. In that state, she still noticed the court members bowing as they walked past them. Her heart was racing by the time they reached the court yard and away from eavesdroppers.
“You know who I am?” she asked the man who grinned at her.
The media had reported that her whole family was killed. Only the few detectives who were in charge of her case knew of her existence. Her surname was changed to Brown by social workers years ago in order to protect her from the cartel. She thought no one else knew that she survived the attack, until now. Not even her foster parents and even her best friend knew her real surname.
“I know everything about you, My queen,” Shane bragged while her mouth dried up and her hands became clumpy.
She wondered if he knew about her killing’s too?
She shut that out of her mind as quickly as it came. Shane would never have married her if he knew that.
“Are you okay?” Shane enquired when he noticed her expression. He could guess what she was thinking.
She nodded and flashed him a smile and concluded that he somehow discovered her identity from social workers, not her revenge acts. That was something she would never reveal to anyone.
“Why did they react that way when you said I was a Mokay?” she asked while he narrowed his eyes at her.
“What do you know about your family?”
“I don’t remember much. Coping mechanism is what the psychologist called it.”
“The Mokay’s are legends here. They possess incredible skills that have protected the throne for centuries. They are the founders of the Harpoon legends. The one family I told you about, who have trained and led the legends.”
Lola tried to process his words. Her heart had raced when the dark figures walked into the court earlier. She had no idea how, but she knew where they would walk and what they would do. She read their signs.
“Who trained the current legends?”
“Your father, probably.”
“They can’t be that old!” She cried out. Those figures did not move like people old enough to be her father’s age. Even if they were younger than her father when he supposedly trained them, they would have to be at least ten years older than her.
Shane could not help but laugh, his wife was truly an open book.
“They are, my queen. The youngest of them is thirty-two years old. One must be eighteen and above to be a legend. The best of the best. Many have spent many hours training to be one. They have also waited for the day the Mokay would return to the kingdom. That is why your presence here is so special. Only you get to choose the next generation of legends,” Shane explained to Lola who could not help but wonder if that was the reason he risked his birthright and married her.
“That is the reason, isn’t it?” she asked softly unable to hide the dull aching pain in her heart.
She was starting to think that maybe Shane secretly loved her while she was with Mike, but that was not it. He was only doing his royal duty to bring the last Mokay to the kingdom.
Shane read through her as always. He pulled her into his arms before wrapping his arms around her waist and gazing into her eyes.
“Would you believe me if I said it was love at first sight?”
She shook her head.
“Would you believe me if I told that I fell for a hot as hell, masked figure with a sniper a hotel away?” he continued while her heart beat like a drum. He knew her secret!
“That I fell for the woman who saved me and also bruised my ego by getting rid of the people I spent most of my life planning to eliminate?”
Lola broke the eye contact. Shane really knew who she was.
“Look at me, wife,” he urged with a voice so gentle, her heart leaped.
“I know everything about you. I know your abilities and absolutely in love with you.”
She shook her head, denying his proclamation.
“You were curious about me. Maybe grateful that I saved you. You discovered that I was the person this kingdom had been longing for. It’s not love.”
Shane could not help but laugh before planting a kiss on her lips.
“I did not have to marry you for any of those things. Getting you out of prison, a thank you gift, and informing the kingdom of who you are, would have been enough.”
She let out a sigh. That would have been enough.
“Why didn’t you do that? Why wait until Mike betrays me?”
“I fell for the woman who was not mine. She is terrified that she is falling for me. It is quite a story our kids will never forget.”
With that, he buried his head on her neck and kissed her hard.
“Shane!” she cried while suppressing a moan.
“Shane Foster, you can’t drop all this on me and then seduce me,” she objected. He knew things she thought she would take to the grave with her and acting like it was nothing.
He lifted his head to look at her. “Watch me, Wife,” he responded before whisking her off her feet and striding inside and towards the elevators.
Lola was completely flashed when she noticed people and maids curiously looking at them.
“We are making a scene!” she cried but that was something Shame did not care about.
“Let them watch. I am not ashamed of loving my wife,” he declared. “I love you, Lola,” he added with a tone that made her all gooey inside.
Meanwhile in the Foster court. Mike was still on his knees for the apology that was yet to be forgiven. He hung his head and avoided his father’s disappointed eyes. He did not need anyone to tell him that he and even his whole clan were in trouble. The king promoting Lola and Shane above everyone else was evidence of that. Shane had enough power to destroy them before, it was worse now.
“Mike junior, Your allegations have no basis. They are dishonest and disrespectful to your Foster heads. You have no regard for the Foster hierarchy, rules and statutes. You shall be beheaded in a fortnight’s time unless forgiven by your Foster heads. This court is adjourned,” the king announced a verdict that made Mike’s heart sink. He could not see Shane and worse Lola forgiving him.
