Mike was still devastated by the verdict when his father approached him. He was on floor pinching his bleeding nose before he could utter an apology.
“Did I not tell you to keep off Shane’s radar? What the f**k did you do?” Sir Mike gritted his teeth while his wife’s eyes misted.
“Forgive him, honey. He was stupid. The verdict is too much of a punishment,” Lady Wendy tried mediating for her son. She was also angry at him for going behind their backs, but too sad about the verdict that could see her only son executed.
“Did he tell you that he would f**k up like this?” Sir Mike roared at his wife, who frantically shook his head. She knew just how her husband valued his birthright and had not doubts that he would divorce her to remain a Foster if he thought she was a threat to that.
“It was uncle Henry. He deceived me. He gave me those photographs,” Mike blurted, diverting his father’s anger to his conniving older brother.
Sir Mike was now livid. “And you fell for it. Don’t you see that he was just using you to get Shane’s position? How many times have I warned you about my brothers?” he shouted, unable to help himself.
Mike hung his head in shame. “I should have known. I am sorry.”
“Too late!” Sir Mike roared and kicked the nearest chair, startling his whole family. He will deal with his deceptive brother later, but his son should have known better in his books.
“Not only did you make me a laughing stock for having no control over my family, you dumped, assaulted and arrested a Mokay for that spoiled brat you call a fiancee?”
“I did not know,” Mike murmured while his sister shook her head in disbelief.
“You dated her for years. How can you not know?” Silvia asked. Their father made it clear to them a long time ago that they were to do checks on anyone they befriended or dated.
“She never spoke about her family, just orphanage. I knew something tragic occurred in her past because she was seeing a psychologist, thats all,” Mike explained. He was already beating himself up about that. Lola would still be still his had he done a proper background check on her like his father taught him to. He would have risen to be above Shane in the Foster hierarchy.
“I can’t believe this! So, basically you don’t do any background checks on the women you strew? Do you know what a big deal this is, Mike?” Sir Mike asked in disbelief. It seemed his son never took any of his advices.
Mike nodded and avoided his father’s disappointed eyes. “She is the commander of all the Harpoon forces. She is only one position below the king.”
“You could have been just below the king in rank had you done your damn homework. You could have uplifted our family. No, you betrayed a Mokay,” Sir Mike shook his head as he spoke, the implications of his son’s actions and stupidity dawning on him.
“We don’t know if she is really a Mokay, Darling. Shane might have said that to save her from Prince Ronald’s interrogation,” his wife suggested.
“Shane is many things, a fool is not one of them. That is why he is still alive despite all the attempts on his life. Not only that, no one lies to the king and lives. He married her for a reason. She is the damn Mokay,” Sir Mike declared with certainty. He did not need any confirmation. Shane risking all the family drama and gossip by marrying his nephew’s ex was proof to him that Lola was who he said she is.
Meanwhile, in their chambers, Lola and Shane laid in each other’s arms, utterly exhausted. Lola had drifted off to sleep when the messenger arrived.
“Lord Shane, the king would like to dine with you and your wife this evening.”
Shane only nodded his head to acknowledge the message before studying the gorgeous woman in his arms. He still could not believe that he married the woman he had been fantasising about. He wondered how long it would take for his seeds to bloom into his heir. That thought got him chucking.
“A cutie he or she shall be,” he declared with certainty.
It was an hour later when Lola woke up to discover that they were to dine with the king and they were late already.
“Why did you not wake me up?” Lola could not help but freak out. She was yet to meet the rest of his relatives. Arriving late for a dinner with the king did not make a good impression.
“Why would I disturb my wife when resting?” Shane asked dismissively.
“This is the king, Shane!” she cried while hurriedly getting dressed, but Shane did not seem the least bothered.
“He can wait,” he said with a shrug as if not talking about the king.
“Let’s go,” Lola urged the moment she finished getting dressed and pulled him towards the door, but Shane was in no hurry. He stopped and took in his wife. The golden silky gown fitted her like a glove and accentuated her gorgeous features. Just look at her was raising the heat he was struggling to suppress since their marriage.
“You are breathtaking, wife,” he said with his sensual lips parted, making her heart flutter.
Lola could not help but blush. Shane knew just what to say and how to say it to make her all gooey inside.
“And you are quite enchanting, husband,” she responded with a honeyed voice that send electric bolts throughout his body. He thought he was losing it when he dreamt about her, but everything about Lola exhilarated him.
He shook his head when a thought to leave the king hanging crossed his mind. It seemed that Lola had completely captured his heart and nothing else, not even his standing in the Foster empire, mattered.
The king was starting to think that the two were not coming when they showed up holding hands. His eyes never leaving his wife too long, and Lola’s burning cheeks every time their eyes met was not very hard to notice. The chemistry between Shane and Lola could be felt by those around them as Shane introduced Lola to the King’s family.
“You are mad,” king Dante pointed out, the moment Shane and Lola took their seats on the dining table.
“I have only been married for a few days and you summon my wife into a court. Then you let your evil brother interrogate her. It looks like you want me to remain single,my king,” Shane complained, using the guilt to get away with making the king wait.
“Circumstances forced our hand, but now we get to meet your beautiful wife,” Queen Mandy was the one who responded. Her smile guaranteed to get them completely forgiven by their most loyal friend.
“Coming to his rescue as usual, My Queen,” Shane pointed out, defeated, while the queen turned all her attention to Lola.
“Welcome, my dear. I am sorry about all this, our customs had to be followed. I hope you will put this behind you and not leave our Guardian here.”
Lola could only smile at the diplomatic Queen. She had just met her, but already won over. Shane’s every word and reaction told her that she would be interacting with the queen and king a lot, something she did not seem to mind. The two were very open and easy to converse with.
“Too late, she already filed for divorce and it is all your fault. Grandfather must be turning in his grave,” Shane’s dramatic response got the king laughing.
“Lord, he would never let me forget it. Hurting his favourite grandchild. Actually, you deserve today for having all his affection while we all came second. I should have executed you,” king Dante said, amused.
“Then, you would have no one keeping your brothers in check. You would be buried right after me,” Shane dared while Lola flinched. She did not find anything funny about Shane dying. A chill descended her spine at the realisation that she deeply cared for him despite her vow never to let any man so close to her heart again.
“Don’t mind them, my dear. These two have a very dark sense of humour,” the Queen Mandy jumped in when she noticed Lola’s subtle discomfort.
“I hope you are not really leaving him. Mel says you are the one,” she added right when Melisa walked in, elegant as usual.
“Talk of the devil, Mel, come and join us,” the queen beamed.
Melisa embraced her daughter-in-law before inspecting her from head to toe and declaring. “You, my dear, are becoming angelic every time I see you.”
“Thank you, Mel. You are too kind,” Lola could not help but brush while the queen’s cousin shot daggers at her.
