At the dinner with the Harpoon monarchs, Lola could not help noticing the blazing eyes the queen’s cousin shot her while she literally lit up when talking to Shane. She also did not miss how Mel gave the woman a cold shoulder despite her doing her best to start a conversation with her.
“How about a dance for the newlyweds?” the queen asked mischievously as the music played. Lola could not help feeling like that was a way of getting her and Shane away from the group while they discussed them or something they did not want them to hear.
“They are discussing us, aren’t they?” she asked Shane the moment they reached the open area of the dining hall.
Shane could not help but chuckle as he skilfully placed his hand on the small of her back.
“You were created to be mine, wife. I don’t even have to teach you my family’s ways,” he stated, impressed.
Lola was not only smart, but observant too.
Lola rolled her eyes at him before asking another question.
“Who is she?”
Shane did not have to ask, he knew exactly whom his wife was referring to.
“The queen’s cousin,” he told her and grinned at her unimpressed expression.
“That is obviously not what I am asking,” she said sternly, a strange feeling brewing inside her.
He pulled her closer into his arms and looked tenderly at her, immediately turning her cheeks scarlet.
“My wife is all I will ever need. You have my word,” he vowed, hushing her unspoken fears, but she still wanted an answer to her question.
“That is not my question,” she pointed out, her eyes not leaving his.
“You have not asked it,” he teased with a tone laced with amusement.
“What is the history between you two?”
“We dated a few years back,”
“Why did you end it?” Lola was curious about this. The woman obviously was still into him.
“I didn’t.”
His response took Lola aback. No sane woman in her books would end things with her perfect husband.
“She ended things?” she asked in disbelief while he nodded and confirmed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“People break up all the time, my gorgeous wife,” he stated before twirling her around and bringing her back into his arms.
“I don’t see any woman breaking up with you.”
He lifted his eyebrows and curled his lips at her statement, his heart fluttering out of control.
“Does that mean you won’t divorce me after two years?”
She opened and closed her mouth, speechless, before realising that he still had not answered her question.
“Tell me or I will ask Mel,” she threatened, forcing him to give her the answers she wanted.
“I was not the prince.”
She frowned, prompting him to explain.
“She dumped me to be with Prince Pluto.”
“Who is that?” Lola asked. She had not met all his relatives, but even in the court, he did not mention any Prince Pluto when he was showing her the other royals.
“He was the king’s youngest brother.”
“Was?”
“Yes, I killed him.”
Now Lola was flabbergasted. “You killed the king’s youngest brother because of her?”
“I never said it was because of her. He tried assassinating the king and I took him out,” he said carelessly before touching her neck and confessing. “I think I left a hickey on you.”
“Shane!”
“What? I told you that I have no shame in loving my wife.”
Lola could only shake her head. “What am I going to do with you, Lord Shane Foster of Foster kingdom?”
Shane could not help but laugh out loud before capturing her lips, their hosts a few distance away completely forgotten.
A few kilometres away from the castle of Harpoon, Prince Ronald hosted his best friend Sir Henry and his family. The group were all bouncing ideas on how to overthrow their enemies.
“We start with the weakest link, the so-called Mokay,” Prince Ronald suggested.
“She would have come out a long time ago if she was a Mokay,” he added, his brain firing out of control with excitement.
“All we need to do is prove that she is not, but we have to be fast before Shane coaches her and she learns to imitate one.”
“I don’t see how that will get me Shane’s throne and you, your brother’s,” Sir Henri confessed, not fully getting his friend.
“Shane has declared to the king and everyone that his wife is the Mokay. What happens if he is found to have been lying?” Prince Ronald asked and winked at his friend when he noticed his eyes light up.
“They will be executed for deceiving the king! You are a genius, Ron!”
“The king is Shane’s best friend,” Lucas, Sir Henry’s son pointed out.
“The Foster rules are clear on this. He can’t pardon him if we are there to in force the rules,” the prince insisted.
“True, but we will have to prove that she is not a Mokay without appearing to be malicious,” Sir Henri added,
“That’s easy, the nation has been waiting for the arrival of the Mokay. We give them a nudge to start the process.”
Sir Henri could not help but laugh before embracing his friend.
“It is always a delight to see your brilliance at work, my friend,” he beamed.
Being a Mokay had lucrative benefits. No one in their right minds would stay unknown for all these years like Lola did if she was truly one. It was common knowledge that the king was still alive because Shane had managed to get rid of every one who had attempted to assassinate him. All they needed to do was get rid of Shane and the thrones would be theirs.
Shane and Lola were still on the dance floor when the Harpoon legends in all black, walked in with the kingdom elders behind them.
Shane’s jaw clenched, his whole demeanour became tense as he pulled his wife closer and whispered to her.
“Trust me and trust your instincts.”
Lola nodded as he led her back to the table, where the legends and elders had bowed respectfully before the king.
Shane could already tell what was coming when he noticed that Prince Ronald and Sir Henri were with the group.
“What is the meaning of this?” King Dante asked, but already knowing the answer. The presents of his brother among the group told him everything he needed to know.
“Forgive us, Sire for showing up unannounced. The nation has waited to long for the Mokay, we need to know if Madame Lola is the one we have been waiting for,” one elder explained with his eyes casted.
“And you saw it fit to start the process without consulting me?” the king asked coldly while the elders all avoided his eyes.
The rules did not require them to get his permission for this particular task, but it would have been a common courtesy to do so.
“Forgive us, Sire. The excitement of having the Mokay again overwhelmed us,” one explained, just as Prince Ronald coached them.
“Very well then, proceed,” the king had no choice but grant them permission. That is when all the attention turned to Lola, who could not stop her heart from galloping. A splitting headache hit her the moment a golden crown with eight rubies around it was placed before her.
She had no idea what they expected from her.
“Madame Lola, are you the Mokay?” King Dante asked Lola, whose hands immediately began to sweat.
