Prince Ronald and Sir Henry could not hide the grins on their faces. Lola looked shaken. Their plan was working perfectly. Only the king could question the Mokay. Lola needed to confirm that she was one and pass several deadly tests. She would be dead before the hour ended if she was not one. If she straight out denied being one, then Shane would have lied to everyone in court and the king would have to execute him instead. Either way, it was perfect for them.
Mellisa could not help worrying about Lola. She hurried to her side and tried to speak on her behalf. Shane was so angry, he was trembling with rage.
“Your Highness…” Mellisa tried to speak, but the king raised his hand, stopping her.
“These are, unfortunately, our ways, Madam Melisa. Many will use our statutes to advance their greedy agendas. My throne, as you see, is also being challenged,” the king’s words sent chills to the elders, who got manipulated by his younger brother.
“Madame Lola, are you the Mokay?” the king asked again.
Lola made eye contact with the fuming Shane. She had never seen him so angry. He told her earlier to trust her instincts. Her instincts told her to be completely honest.
“I don’t know, Your Highness,” she said in earnest. That was her surname but they obviously expected something seemingly powerful from the so-called Makay and she had no idea if she was the one.
“You are either one or not!” Prince Ronald yelled from the back, halting the whole process before the realisation of his actions hit him. He cursed out and dropped on his knees, knowing exactly what was coming.
“Half of your wealth shall be given to the Mokay,” the king declared coldly.
“Yes, Sire,” the prince could only say. His brother could have beheaded him if he wished.
Lola’s left hand was holding Shane’s, her right, Mellisa’s as the attention turned back to her again.
“I only know that my parents were Bianca and Erick Mokay. My siblings were Steve and Diana. I don’t remember anything else,Your Highness,” she explained while the elders and legends gasped as they exchanged looks at her response. They knew the names too well. Sacred in their country, but the most important one was missing.
Prince Ronald and Sir Henri exchanged annoyed looks when everyone gasped. Lola could have been coached by Shane about that in their books. It did not prove anything as far as they were concerned.
“I don’t know if I am the person this nation has been waiting for,” Lola added softly.
“What is your full name?” the king asked while the room became dead silent. That had become the most critical moment in his reign. Everyone, besides Lola, knew it.
Lola momentarily closed her eyes. The king was asking for the identity she buried when she was eight.
“Lola Aloisia Mokay, Your Highness.”
Queen Mandy could not hide the grin on her face, while everyone’s jaw dropped in amazement.
“Strong famous warrior,” the king murmured, shaking his head in disbelief while Mellisa looked at her daughter-in-law with shock.
Lola felt unsettled by the way everyone was looking at her. Her heart hammered when the king took the crown and passed it to Shane, who had not said a word. Something about that crown terrified her. She frowned when Shane pulled out a knife from his sock on the side of his leg.
“Trust me,” Shane urged before making a cut on her hand, letting her blood drop on the shiny crown.
Lola watched her blood drop on the golden crown before a flashback.
Beautiful red dress and her hair tied into pigtails. She excitedly trotted next to her father. Her eyes misted when he took out that crown again.
“I don’t want it, dad,” she objected while he smiled at her.
“Honey, this is your destiny.”
“But it shocks me!” she cried.
“It has chosen you. You will learn to command it,” her father gently explained while she frantically shook her head.
“I don’t want to command anything. I hate it! I hate it!”
“Lola? Babe?”
Lola was snapped back to reality and found Shane tenderly studying her.
“Are you okay?”
She shook her head, got on her feet and moved away from him and that crown.
“Babe? Talk to me,” Shane urged. Nothing had happened when he dropped her blood on the crown, but something was different with his wife.
“I hate that crown. Keep it away from me!”
Shane narrowed his eyes at her. “You remember something.”
“It’s an electric current. It shocked me and almost stopped my heart!” Lola cried while eyes widened at the implications of her words.
“How old were you?” Shane asked, curious.
“I don’t know. Keep that thing away from me.”
“Five. She must have been five,” the oldest of the legends responded. To the legends, even though they had not truly tested her, they now had no doubt that Lola was the one.
The king turned to the old man.
“She must have been five, Your Highness. The Mokay once brought his daughter here. We remained outside when he took her to the cove. We only saw the light, the earth shook and everything blew up. She was unconscious when he came out with her.”
The king turned back to Lola, who was backing away from all of them.
“Madame Lola…”
“I am not the Mokay,” Lola cut the king off.
“She shall deny her identity. The prophecy is true,” the king stated before nodding to the legends, who immediately sprung up, charging towards Lola with their swords drawn out.
“What the hell!” Shane cursed out, also springing to his feet, but the king held his arm and pulled him back.
“Let me go,” Shane commanded, hierarchy completely forgotten. He needed to protect his wife, that was what he had vowed to do even to his death.
“Stand down,” the king commanded his fuming friend. “She is the Mokay,” he added with certainty.
“She has no idea what that means! Are you trying to get me divorced?” Shane asked in disbelief.
“Are you yelling at your king?” the king asked, amused.
“You are threatening my wife!” Shane cried.
“She does not look threatened,” the king pointed out, before signalling for his protective friend to see what was happening.
