I followed the guys out of my office and went downstairs, where I took my coat off and hung it with the others. As I walked toward the kitchen, I heard Dominique call out for me.
Despite needing to put something in my stomach, I stopped and waited the few seconds it took for my boy to run across the living room with both of the pups running behind him. I picked Dominique up and gave him a big hug, feeling grateful to be back home with him.
As I set him back down, he asked, “Where were you, dad?”
“I was helping someone,” I answered.
“The girl you brought in?” he inquired further.
“Yes,” I answered before asking, “Would you like something to eat?”
“No thanks. I had lunch right before you got home,” Dominique answered, then he surprised me by asking, “Is she your girlfriend?”
