Once seated, I glanced around until my eyes landed on Syrana. She was coming out of the kitchen with a tray full of glasses filled with water.
“Syrana, there are plenty of hands here to help with that,” I said to her, wanting to quickly get my point across.
“I know, sir, but I wasn’t doing anything else at the moment and figured I would help speed things along,” she immediately responded.
“I always appreciate your help, Syrana. When you are finished with that task, please come have a seat here,” I instructed, pointing at the chair to my left,
“Yes, sir,” she responded, continuing with the task at hand.
While Syrana set the water down on each plate, I helped Dominique fill his plate before filling my own plate with food. I had just finished pouring syrup on a pile of blueberry pancakes when Syrana sat down.
Instead of talking, I nodded my head toward her plate and suggested, “Enjoy some breakfast, Syrana.”
She nodded her head in return, then proceeded to pile food onto her plate. She had always had a good appetite. The problem is getting her to take the time to sit down and eat.
While waiting for the others to join us, I went ahead and scarfed down my plate of food. There were some changes to be made, and I had to make sure everybody knew what would be expected of them, moving forward.
I was almost finished eating when I realized Peyton was nowhere in sight. He would be an integral part of getting everybody acclimated to the new place, so I got the attention of Ramon and instructed him to find Peyton and have him join us right away.
Since it would be a few minutes before Ramon returned with Peyton, I utilized that time to talk with Syrana. I leaned in a little closer to ensure she could hear me and quietly asked, “Are you ready for a promotion?”
Her eyes widened to the size of saucers, as she excitedly nodded a yes to me. I chuckled at this woman, who I adored as much as I adored my own mother, then I offered her the position of being Dominique’s full-time nanny.
Tears of joy welled at the bottom of her eyelids as she jokingly mumbled, “Mon Cheri, I thought you’d never ask. It will be my honor!”
“Merci, Syrana! I knew I could count on you. No more housekeeping unless it has something to do with Dominique. He is your sole responsibility now,” I instructed with a wink, then added, “We will go over all the details later today.”
“Oui monsieur. I will not let you down,” she assured me.
Now that I knew Syrana was up to the responsibility, I turned my focus to Dominique and let him know that she would be tending to his needs whenever I was busy with work. Of course, he was happy to hear that she would be the one taking care of him. They formed a close bond long ago when he was just an infant.
By that time, Ramon had returned and Peyton had joined us at the table. I made sure to call for the other help who had already returned to the kitchen, then I made the big announcement.
"Today, we all start a new chapter in our lives. As most of you know, we are here without Dominique’s mother, Abrielle. She has not been caring for our son and has been mistreating him, so I had taken matters into my own hands.
Moving forward, Abrielle is not welcome in my home. If any of you allow her to come inside without my permission, you will be fired on the spot. Is that understood?”
I gave everybody a chance to nod in agreement, then I continued, “Syrana is being promoted from Head of housekeeping to Dominique’s personal nanny. That being said, Uriela, I would like to offer you the position of head housekeeper. Are you up for the responsibility?”
“Oui, monsieur,” Uriela quickly responded.
“Great! We will hash out the details after breakfast,” I informed her before turning my attention to Zahina, “Would you like the position of head maid?”
“Oui, monsieur,” she answered with a smile playing on her lips.
“Wonderful. You will now report to Uriela for specific daily duties and any questions that you may have. We will discuss it more this afternoon.”
“Merci, monsieur,” Zahina responded, then she started to hurry off to the kitchen, carrying several empty plates in her hands with an ear-to-ear grin plastered on her face.
However, she stopped in her tracks when I announced, “Everybody, I would like to introduce you all to Peyton Weber. He has been the groundskeeper here at Lysbrook Manor for some time now and knows just about everything there is to know about this property. Don’t hesitate to seek out his advice as needed.”
After introducing Peyton to everybody present in the room, I got up and walked with him to the kitchen where the rest of the staff was busy cleaning up from the breakfast preparations. Once the introductions were all done, I instructed Syrana to tend to Dominique’s needs while we went to my office to discuss security updates.
Dominique knew I had responsibilities concerning our home and my business, so he didn’t put up a fuss when he heard I was stepping away. Instead, he smiled at Syrana and asked, “Can we play outside today?”
She glanced at me, clearly unsure if that was okay, so I flashed a smile her way and gave a little nod to let her know it was, then I left the dining area and walked with Peyton to my personal office upstairs. Once there, we got straight down to business.
He informed me of a few different incidents involving intruders trying to burglarize the sheds outside, but Peyton was able to run them off before they had the chance to steal anything. He was more than just a groundskeeper for this place. He was also my go to for security, in terms of surveillance and things like that.
Peyton had placed scanning devices all over the property. Whenever something passed by it with an overall body mass comparable to a person, Peyton would get an alert straight to his phone.
I also wanted to receive those alerts in real time, so that is the first thing that got addressed. Once the app was installed on my phone, and he had taken the time to show me the basics of how to use the app, we moved on to the next topic of discussion.
It took some time to explain everything to him, but something had been bugging me for a while, and it was past time to look into it. Knowing what I needed him to do, Peyton left my office and headed back to his personal cottage behind the mansion to do his work in secret without prying eyes.
