Chapter Sixteen

Blaiz Next on my agenda was getting in touch with Lydan. I figured Asralyn is probably still pissed at me, so it’s probably best to get an update from Lydan instead. He was quite confused about what had happened with Asralyn and our supposed client. According to Lydan, everybody who was supposed to be there to give a speech or gain recognition was present at the banquet. I was completely baffled, and so was Lydan. He mentioned something about a woman in a cast getting shoved or something and having to be taken by ambulance to the hospital, but she wasn’t anybody of importance, as far as he knew. So neither of us could make sense of why Asralyn felt the need to leave the banquet to go with this woman to the hospital. That being said, I got off the phone with Lydan and immediately called Asralyn, but she sent my call straight to voicemail. Yep. She is still pissed. I was just about to try calling again when Quayliah walked into my office. She headed straight toward my desk, swaying her hips from side-to-side, the way she always does when she is getting ready to try to seduce me, but I was in no mood. Before she got within five feet of my desk, I instructed, “Quayliah, perfect timing. I need you to draw up some new contracts. The first is for Syrana. Moving forward, she will be Dominique’s full-time nanny. The second is for Uriela. She is now the head of housekeeping. The third is for Zahina, who is now the head maid. Any questions?” “No questions, sir. I’ll get right on it,” Quayliah responded, turning on her professionalism, but not hiding the look of disappointment that was plastered on her face. “Thanks,” I mumbled, returning my focus to my phone. I attempted to call Asralyn once again, but got the same result. Assuming whatever was going on had resolved itself, I moved on with my day. There was still a lot that needed to be tended to, and I couldn’t simply waste time trying to get my sister to act mature and answer her damn phone. While I waited for the new contracts, I called Lydan back and instructed him to set up a meeting between me, Seth and Miss Lachlan. No way would I have them meet me at my home, but I was happy to meet them somewhere in a nearby city. To my surprise, Lydan called me back less than an hour later to let me know they had both agreed to meet me, and that they were willing to travel to Roanoke for the meeting. That would save me a great amount of time, and I was very happy about it. While I was in between tasks, I got up from my chair, needing to stretch my legs and walked over to the window. Down below, I could see Dominique running across the yard with Syrana running close behind. She was reaching out, trying to either tag or grab Dominique, but he dodged her attempt by suddenly turning right. They were both smiling, letting me know they were playing a game. Most likely tag. So I was able to return to my work without worrying about what was going on. I was going through my calendar and rescheduling anything that wasn’t of major importance when Quayliah returned with all three of the contracts I had requested. Considering what she had done with the last contract I requested, I thought it best to give them a quick glance over before calling them good. Lucky for her, I was satisfied with her work this time and didn’t have to request that the contracts be redone. It would not have gone over well with me if she had messed up one of these contracts, too. With the new contracts in hand, I sat down with each of the ladies, one-by-one. We discussed their new pay rates and what would be expected of them, then we both signed the contract with Quayliah witnessing the signature process. By the time I had finished up in my office for the day, I was beyond ready for dinner. I had skipped lunch, opting to keep working, but now my stomach was very unhappy, and I could feel my energy levels dropping rather quickly. During dinner, I informed everybody that I would be making a trip to town for a business meeting and asked if there was anything anybody was in need of. Living so far up on the mountain, it just made sense to grab anything needed while we were in town instead of having to drive back the next day. I also took the time to explain how to use the security system. When dinner was over, Peyton used Quayliah’s office downstairs to give each person their personal code to use when coming and going. This was a precaution suggested by Peyton to ensure nobody tried to pull a fast one on us and pin it on another person. The more I worked with Peyton and got to know him, the more impressed I became. Not only was he great at maintaining this place, but he had a well of knowledge when it came to safety and security. He was definitely going to be a major asset for me and Dominique. It was honestly kind of strange how much I trusted the man, considering how little I knew of him, but what could I say? Sometimes you just know when you can or can’t trust someone. Dominique also has his own code for the security system, but I wanted to be the one to give him his code, so I took him up to my office. I let Syrana know she could have the rest of the evening to herself, and she was happy to retreat to her room, which was next to Dominique’s. While in my office, I gave Dominique his code. I had it engraved on the inside of a small 18k gold ring that perfectly fit Dominique’s right middle finger. “How do I look, dad?” he asked, strutting across my office, wearing his ring and a smug look on his face. I chuckled at my son, enjoying this moment more than you can possibly imagine. It was a side of him that I had never seen before, and I have to say… It was just swell to see Dominique not acting so prim and proper. It was time he acted more like a kid and less like an adult.
