The next morning Joseph is asleep in a chair in the parlor. He fell asleep waiting for his father to come home. Virginia has just finished breakfast. She didn't sleep at all, not because of Gary.'s death. Virginia has been trying to come up with a way to convince her son to marry Rose.
Joseph wakes up, calling for his father. He calls Duke into the room but doesn't give the man time to walk into the room before he starts yelling "My father didn't come home. I need you to ride to the Abbotts's ranch to tell Richard. We need to gather a search party. Something isn't right."
Duke runs right out of the room.
