When they heard that, the officers’ training kicked in.  One gestured for Briar to move away from the entrance while he himself approached it, hand poised over the gun at his hip. Following him a few steps behind, his partner was talking to a dispatcher, asking if any other unit had remained behind this residence after setting the place up for house arrest.  As neither of them had noted any vehicle parked anywhere visible, they didn’t find that latter possibility to be likely. Indeed, the dispatch confirmed a moment later that they were the only police officers left in that area. The partners looked at each other and nodded, then one ordered Briar sternly, “Stay here.
