The Enemy

Brian's pov “It was her, Nate. I am sure of what I saw!” I cleared out everything on the table, anger clouding my gaze as I tried to find my breath again. I found her. I found my wife. And then I lost her again. “I’m not saying you didn’t, Alpha. But you’ve been looking for her for so long. What if you imagined seeing—” I threw a bottle into the wall before he could complete that sentence. It shattered into so many pieces, and Nate jumped from where he was standing, fear on his face. “Just f*****g find her. Use whatever resources you have. I’m sure she is somewhere in this town.” To his own credit, he didn’t argue with me any longer and simply nodded, writing down my instructions. Who would’ve believed that she would flee to this place of all places? The human world wasn’t a place for people like us, so I never thought I’d find her here. “So,” My half-friend, Max, started, sitting languidly on the couch and choosing his words cautiously. “Is it revenge you want?” “What do you mean?” I looked at him. “I mean, you’ve been looking for her for so long. Is it because she tried to kill you?” My jaws clenched, and I shot him a glare. “Shouldn’t she pay for that?” The room became silent after I said this. “I didn’t think you were so petty.” His eyes narrowed on me. “No matter how I think about what happened that year, it doesn’t make sense to me. A woman who has been in love with you up until that day suddenly decided to poison you to death. Don’t you think you might’ve done something to warrant that kind of retaliation?” I tore my gaze away from him. He was looking at me as if I knew the answer to that. “I didn’t do anything.” I said, and I didn’t know why my voice shook when I said that. “Think deep, Brian.” “I said I didn’t do anything!” My voice had risen a few notches, edged with warning as I pinned him with a look. Max went quiet, and only a tense air remained between us until Nate interrupted with a question. “What if Luna was possessed?” We both turned our heads to look at him. “That is not possible. Possession is not as simple as you think.” Max said. “But our enemies are quite involved in things like that. The first blood clan, for example—” “If that was it, why would they want to kill me?” “Obviously because you’ve been poking your nose in their business and you’ve been in their way for long enough.” Max said, and I shook my head. “No. It’s not them.” I was sure about this. The first blood clan had nothing to do with what Olivier did that day. Nate’s phone began to ring, and when he looked at it, he took in a big breath before turning the screen towards me. “It’s Miss Sloane.” I had completely forgotten that I had been with a woman before I ran into Olivier. We were supposed to have dinner in that restaurant. I threw Nate a nod, and he went to a corner to answer the call. When he returned, his expression was grave. “Miss Sloane had an accident while returning to her hotel.” My eyes snapped towards Nate’s. “Where is she?” “At Hillview hospital.” “Are you sure she is not faking it?” Max commented and I knew that was aimed to get a reaction out of me, He always enjoyed doing that. I ignored him and simply picked up my coat before walking out. “Let’s go, Nate.” Still, even as I got to the hospital to apologize to Miss Sloane for how I had left earlier, I couldn’t help thinking about Olivia. She had changed but I recognized her. I would recognize her anytime. Her scent was exactly as I had remembered it and her eyes, the way they had widened when they spotted me. And then my thoughts moved to the man I had spotted next to her. He was holding a child in his hand. A child. My mind clouded over as I thought about this. Was she married again? “Brian… Alpha Brian?” I looked up when I heard my name. It seemed like Miss Sloane had been trying to get my attention. Nate cleared his throat beside me. “Yes?” I answered. “I was asking if we could make up for the dinner we missed tomorrow?” “Definitely,” I answered simply, realizing that I could no longer concentrate on anything. “You seemed to have been deep in thoughts.” Of course, she noticed. “I’m sorry about that.” I said, preparing to leave. “It’s no problem. The woman earlier… is that the wife who ran away from you?” I nodded my head to that and a nurse happened to walk in just then to deliver her drugs. Her injury wasn’t serious. Just a scratch on her knee. “I heard she tried to kill you.” Sloane said, causing me to pause. I hadn’t let that news spread but people like her would have their own way of finding out about certain things. “That’s why I’m going to make her pay.” I said, eyes narrowing as I thought about the poisoned food Olivier had fed me. I still have not been able to eat pasta to this day. Why did she try to kill me? No matter how long I thought about it, I couldn’t figure out why. “Brian? She does not deserve you. You should stop thinking about her now.” Sloane told me, lips stretching as she continued, “So, dinner tomorrow then?”
