In the Greek myth, the Athenian hero Theseus found his way out of the labyrinth by attaching a flaxen thread to his wrist so that he could retrace his steps if he hit a wall. Flax, as I had learnt (again, courtesy of Mrs. Nolan), was a plant used for its fibers, from which could be made linen cloth. It was also used as a kind of food, which was what it was mainly known for nowadays due to the creation of synthetic fibers.
However, this maze was completely unlike the labyrinth. There were no walls, as the stone pillars were spaced such that we could walk right between them.
