The darkness was so complete that Savannah could hardly see her own hand in front of her face. The power hadn’t just gone out for the building they were in, but for the whole block; maybe even the whole city. Screams weren’t just coming from around her, but she could hear them from the street and surrounding night spots as well. People were chattering amongst themselves about how there had been rumors of a hurricane approaching, but llike all people who grew accustomed to living on the eastern seaboard, they didn’t really take those rumors seriously.  Some enterprising college students would even throw hurricane parties and drink themselves into a stupor at the mere hint of a storm on the horizon, instead of taking sensible precautions - like buying water or securing their windows.
