A few days later, on Wednesday evening, Elsie crept out of Finn’s bedroom and put a finger to her mouth. “Let’s go to the living room,” she whispered. She’d finally gotten him down for the night.

“Tea, thanks.” I sat at their new table and looked around the kitchen. “So, how have you been?” I hadn’t seen my sister in a while. I missed when she lived upstairs from me. I missed how simple my life had been back then. I’d thought it boring, when it had been beautiful and clean.
